Steve Flipping Out on Dunkirk Caller

Today on ATRAB just before the 4:30 break, Steve- you acted like a complete baby when "Eric from NJ" shared his opinion about Dunkirk. It sounded like someone insulted a dead relative. You obviously have a bias against Dunkirk as minutes before his allowance win I believe you were quoted as saying you would "bet the mortgage against him". I tried to call in today but nobody picked up and Haskin came on. Glad to see he disagreed with you. Difference of opinion in racing is great but to hear the hissy-fit was bad radio- especially when the caller was just stating his opinion.
I've been a listener to the show for 3 years and I've disagreed with you and guests at times but that's fine and that's what it's all about. But I don't think that strong reaction to that caller was justified, especially when we had Smooth Air crammed down our throats last year and have to listen to John White rave about Pioneer of the Nile every single week. Here's an idea, why don't you show him the same defiance you showed the caller today since you've said you disagree with him in the past- or at least make him talk about something other than Pioneer of the Nile. John White is 100 times more annoying than any caller I've heard.

Kasept 03-30-2009 06:57 PM

Points all valid and well taken. As I said, I was sorry I jumped on him. I don't do it too often. I didn't mind the difference of opinion at all... That's always great. What finally got to me was the insisting that a horse coming from out of it was preferable to a horse on/near the front.

As to not liking Dunkirk, he ran a nice race and I have no feeling pro or con with him. It isn't a Coolmore issue as Thunder Gulch is one of my favorites all time. I was irked by the way in which Saturday has been turned into "Dunkirk was cheated".

Appreciate you listening and the feedback.

Steve......

I just about fell outta my chair laughing, when you told the guy to "find a new hobby"! It was very entertaining radio!:p

It was bad... I felt terrible the rest of the show and apologized a half dozen times. I've been edgy and anxious to get home for about 5 days. Have been here three weeks...

I thought it was the best ATR show he's done(it's the best I've ever heard.) If the three people he argued with had given in to him, then it wouldn't have worked as well. God Bless them(they were a part of the best ATR show ever.) All three told him he was wrong(actually all three disagreed with him about whether the track was biased.) Even when he told the caller to get a new hobby, the guy didn't exactly run off. He said.."Well, that's my opinion." I'll tell you what though...The first 10-15 minutes of the show(when Steve was talking alone about the Florida Derby) I thought the guy might have a medical episode. Right about when he said "He beat that horse on the square" I thought something might come loose. I didn't think it could get any better, and then (I still can't believe it) I hear him tell Lauren that so n' so cashes more tickets than she n' him do. I really don't know how they calmed down after he said that, but somehow they got back into a regular conversation. I'm telling you, this show was da bomb, folks. Was a laugh riot when Steve kept saying "Let me tell you something....This DUNKIRK!..."

onebadbeast 03-31-2009 12:27 AM

YES STEVE, IT WAS GREAT RADIO. I DIDNT KNOW WHETHER HASKIN WAS GOING TO UP AND LEAVE ON YOU OR WHAT? VERY SUSPENSEFUL.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.:tro:

Just shows your human not a Robot ;-)

Hickory Hill Hoff 03-31-2009 05:55 AM

It was one of the more intense shows, but that just shows Steve's passion for the game.

joeydb 03-31-2009 06:05 AM

I agree with HHH...it's symptomatic of having passion for the game. Don't ever lose that Steve...we love you for it.

I'm so glad I don't have an open microphone on me on my bad days at work...what you guys would hear would not be suitable for broadcast. More like the polar opposite of what the "King's English" would be.

Ironically, looks like Hour 1 is not working on the archive. Just letting you guys know.

TheSpyder 03-31-2009 06:53 AM

Archives not working for that hour...censored?

Notice in posts and on the air Steve's been a little wound up lately.

Big fan of this horse (South Beach Luv) getting 2nd on Million Day, never in a million years would I think that she would have a internet moniker named after her.

Haha well I had to pick something, we were at Arlington in the paddock and my wife spotted her, she is an absolute dead ringer for her retired thoroughbred mare. She won that day and we've been following her since.
She hurt herself in that race on Million Day, but has since recovered, might be shipping to Delaware Park and fingers crossed coming back to Arlington this summer.

For me, it was about crushing that exacta with the Pletcher horse, paid about $90 if I recall, and getting to bust my friends balls becuase it was my choice for the show parlay, and I wanted to use her, but becuase she was 15/1, they were razzing me. :)

SCUDSBROTHER 03-31-2009 01:58 PM

The day after, an internet sportsbook has decided to continue to poor acid into the BYK Beaker.

"This Dunkirk" +500

Quality Road +600

I Want Revenge +800

Old Fashioned +900

Pioneerof the Nile +1000

The Pamplemousse +1400

Choclate Candy +2500 (for Lauren S.)

Note: I didn't miss the odds for F. Fire (they don't have any for him...what's the term for that? ..house horse?)

gales0678 03-31-2009 02:23 PM

what do they do with Dunkirk now?

Does he go into the Derby trail and then run back a week later in the KY derby?

Does he skip and go to the preakness?

Does he skip the TC all together and point to the Travers and then the BCC?

had hrtv on sunday-in the middle of talking about an upcoming race, jon white started in on his 'potn-may foal-just getting started' routine-i felt bad for joanne jones. i figure, sick as i am of hearing all his talk of why he likes the horse, just think if you had to work with him every day, and hear that mantra over and over again!

cowgirlintexas 03-31-2009 03:07 PM

Will be a great rematch if Quality road wins the derby...:)

down the stretch show

Did anyone hear the show Saturday when Jay Pridman snapped at Bill Finley who simply asked a question on the Down the Stretch show?

dunkirk tirade - potn john white

I too heard the dunkirk arguments and especially felt bad for the caller. For many it is a hobby, as people have real jobs with real stresses and are looking at it as a release not as a profession. I thought the caller made many good points in terms of QRs running style and how it fit with other derby horses versus dunkirk's who may be more favorable pace wise and Steve went over the top with the get a new hobby comment.

There have been many horses who have closed street sense, monarchos, giacamo, fupeg etc that the caller's points were not so out of left field. I agree with tjfrab that it came across as a dunkirk bias. Not sure if its an anti pletcher thing cause of his comments or the price tag on the horse but thats how it came across. I too remember the bet my mortgage against him comment so there's been a precedent for that anti dunkirk stuff for a while now. I agreed with Haskin's take in terms of focusing on the horse.

As for Jon White, not only on hrtv was he touting potn again but he said he thinks hes gonna win the triple crown. I felt bad for the poor girl too that had to work for him. I think Steve should give him a hard time with that similar how he was to the caller on dunkirk or haskin or lauren stich. All Jon does is bring everything back to potn this and potn that. You want to talk bad radio...thats bad radio. I need more objectivity from him.

Been listening to the show for a while now, last couple of years. Have read the forums in the past many times, this is the first time ive felt obliged to post something about the show. Called in a few times, once last year to argue about the substance of the Alabama being a grade 1 given it had 4 horses, only two of which had a shot.

Just thought this whole Dunkirk thing seemed to spark a passion I havent seen or heard in years. It seems like people either really like the horse, 7-1 second future book, or are very anti him as we heard on the show yesterday.

As someone earlier noted it was the most intense show ive heard. As the originally poster said it seemed like there was an anti dunkirk bias from Steve and I didnt get where it was coming from. The horse ran a monster race against a speed 'appreciating' track. At the end of the day he isnt making the derby so how he fits is moot.

The odds at that future book are silly given his current earnings.

We all have a passion for the sport of horse racing. I thought the first post by tjfrab was great. I enjoy the radio show and probably listen about 10 hours weekly whether its live or archived. I am a regular reader of the blog and although I stay on the sidelines this warrants commenting on. I think Steve made the point he was a little harsh suggesting the caller find a new hobby and he apologized to all that felt offended. Lets move on.

swale 03-31-2009 07:29 PM

Keep up the Passion

Steve you have great passion for the game and the derby trail. Keep up the great work on the show. Its the best!

Seriously, it doesn't load, all kidding about Dunkirk aside.

I know and the rss download is missing for that hour. Steve must have decided not to broadcast this beyond the live version and had censored it, which is a shame. I never got to hear that half hour either.

Yeah I didn't hear it either, I wasn't near my radio for the first hour. Not a big fan of censorship, on anybody's part, but hey, it's not my show.
