If Giant Oak doesn't win this it's really time for a surface change.

justindew 03-30-2009 04:13 PM

Does Hawthorne always draw 5 days out?

Jose Espinoza wasn't available.

It's about par for an Ill Derby...plenty of candidates to run 6th or worse on May 2.

True, he was an exception...unfortunately he only recently grabbed his 1st win since last April.

There are actually a few in there who might be decent horses down the road. Hopefully no Cowtown Cats.

I think Nicanor would win this race.

Seen worst Derbies.....the Lane's End at Turfway wasn't much better

Mike 03-30-2009 05:12 PM

Perfect Song! I've got him in my RTTR stable.

Mike 03-30-2009 05:21 PM

Perfect Song ran 3 times(Jan, Feb and March).Wired his 6 furlong maiden race at Philly by 6 lengths; lost on Turfway's synthetic by a head at 6.5 furlongs in Feb; then won an allowance at Laurel at a mile, again easily on the front end. Bris speed figs were 100, 90 and 99 respectively for those races

He's is a confirmed Metrosexual.

Mike 03-30-2009 06:45 PM

Perfect Song is going to be way out in front of these guys

Unless he draws an extreme post, this one's gone.

What do you think the odds will be,10-1?

thanks Mike , I'll check him out. I am looking to play against both Giant Oak and Musket Man here.

Indian Charlie 03-30-2009 08:07 PM

It's actually a G2 not G3.

I wonder if a horse ever exiting a maiden 20 claimer has ever been favored in a grade 2 before.

Draws an extreme post? Mike... He's the 6. They already drew. It's the basis for the thread...

Steve, I'm sure you can give him a pass. I mean, this DID almost deteriorate into another Giant Oak thread pretty quickly.

If Giant Oak WINS this, it's because the other 10 horses scratched out of the race!!

Lordy, I want him to win this race!!! I know its a longshot but I would :{>: to see a PP baby in the Derby with his first crop!!!! And on a serious handicapping note, he did win his first race on my birthday, so he must be good!! :D

Now TAP has no reason to bitch, if Dunkirk doesn't get in the Ky Derby. There are no Quality Road's in there.

It's sad to think one of these crows will be in the starting gate on May 2nd and Dunkirk probaly wont.

Linny 03-31-2009 11:53 AM

Horses "don't vet out" alot and somethines it's for something chronic that may either flare up at the wrong time or something that doesn't bother the horse but that "might hurt him" down the road.
Other times they show some soreness or tenderness shortly after a big race (when potential buyers are sending in vets) and it dissipates after a few extra days.
Remember too that vets tend to want to err on the side of caution. NO VET can certify that a horse is in perfect condition or that a pre-existing condition won't cause a problem later. No vet wants to say "yes, he's suitably sound for your purposes" and have the horse go wrong a week later can happen. If they see anything questionable they like to make a big deal of it. (Most of my experience in this area is with show horses not race horses but the idea is the same. The show horses in most cases are asked to show alot and perform at a high level.)

HaloWishingwell 03-31-2009 02:15 PM

Pletcher has three in this race? Any of the three could possibly pass DUNKIRK. I bet he wishes DUNKIRK was in this race now. The only way he doesn't beat these other horses is if his gate fail to open.

Kasept 04-01-2009 12:11 PM

Lord Justice will SCR and run in the Wood..

i was thinking the same... make or break to keep on the trail IMO. I actually think he's gotta win to even think about considering the derby

All I want to know is....will the ostrich race be back this year?
Whenever they do, it is usually the highlight of Illinois Derby Day at Hawthorne for me.

JJP 04-01-2009 07:48 PM

If one needed any evidence that the dollar has been debased by all the government bailouts and spending, check out this field running for $500,000. This isn't your father's $500,000. Makes one want to go out and buy gold.

GBBob 04-02-2009 11:06 AM

If you don't win the Illinois Derby, the next Derby you should be thinking of is not the one in Kentucky.

tjfla 04-03-2009 11:12 AM

Gotta like Musket Man but my luck he gets destroyed, He did look good tho in his last start

JJP 04-03-2009 08:01 PM

IMO, Perfect Song is the one to beat here and should give Trombetta his second Illinois Derby in the last 4 years.

Borntorun 04-04-2009 10:44 AM

Rider Change

Checked the changes at Hawthorne's web-site and they list M. Pino on Perfect Song. Any one know why Rose is off? Thanks.

Bigsmc 04-04-2009 04:21 PM
