$300 "free" wager on the Florida Derby

I recently came in first place on Capital OTB's "Sun and Snow Showdown" contest. One of the 1st place prizes is a wager (win, place or show) on Saturday's Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. I was wondering how the DT members would play this wager if they had the chance? It's a straight wager of $300 win, place or show. I'm kinda leaning toward a show wager (don't want to get real greedy) Like to hear how some of you guys would play it.

When do you have to decide?

KirisClown 03-24-2009 04:35 PM

If you got a payout for the contest then make a win bet and look to run it up.

Just don't pay too much attention to anything the guy who handicaps NY racing for them says.

I'd bet the horse you think has the best change to win... to show..

A lot better chance of getting money back!! And then you can (hopefully) use that money to play other horses to win, exacta's, etc..

I saw it.

OTB should want him to make a tri......more money back for them. I bet they would make an exception.

You did help me with my decisions in the contest itself with the Aqueduct portion and for that I thank you!

Inherit the Gold (3/14) - 14.00 5.30 and another horse I can't remember at this time

3kings 03-24-2009 05:28 PM

without knowing the entries

look for a live longshot and bet it all on him to place

blackthroatedwind 03-24-2009 05:42 PM

Well, at least my cold tri is no longer the worst suggestion.

Coach Pants 03-24-2009 05:58 PM

Bet Dumbkirk to win

Bobby Fischer 03-24-2009 05:59 PM

If it were me, I'd play Dunkirk to show and set the $315 aside for a later play on the Ashland, or even the Kentucky Derby...

MISTERGEE 03-24-2009 06:11 PM

just checking are they giving you the proceeds of the bet, or the $300 back as well

What ever the wager pays, if the horse pays $6.00 to win = $900

MISTERGEE 03-24-2009 06:17 PM

ok then i would go with the show bet

Rudeboyelvis 03-24-2009 06:18 PM

I'd totally be cool with walking away w/ 320.00 and then pissing it away on P4's at Tampa

Show bet Dunkirk or QR

The Indomitable DrugS 03-24-2009 06:19 PM

Why is Dunkirk a cinch to run 3rd?

MISTERGEE 03-24-2009 06:20 PM

do we know the entries?

Payson Dave 03-24-2009 06:21 PM

they draw the race tomorrow

lets see... betting $300 into a race where either Dunkirk or Quality Road most likely win at less than 2-1, or taking that $315 to bet a race worth betting??

Oh wait it was a fischer post , nevermind...

blackthroatedwind 03-24-2009 06:24 PM

Do you have to make one bet....or bet on only one horse?

If not, and all you really want is a few bucks to bet the other races, why not make three $100 show bets, where you will at least get some money back.

Well, it's already been determined that I've gotten really sad, so why not just throw in the towel.

The Indomitable DrugS 03-24-2009 06:36 PM

If it's any consolation - I thought you were knocking down some nice short range jumpers earlier today.

Thanks.

I thought the Swale comment was a 360 windmill slam dunk.....but then again, being as I've gotten sad and all, maybe I overestimated that one as well.
