Sunshine Millions and other HD coverage.

So there is no HD coverage of the Sunshine Millions, so thenI went through NTRA TV schedule nothing is listed until KD at 5 pm on NBC.

Maybe they are negotiating contracts, but what happened to all the ESPN/ABC/CBS coverage? I want my HD!!!

Magna PAID for that coverage and it wasn't/isn't cheap. Although the question hasn't been asked, I'll guess they simply can't justify the expense right now...

Guess they finally found a line to draw in the sand, eh Steve? ;)

Ah...I didn't know Magna paid for all of it..I'm sure it was quite costly.

What do you think about the rest of the coverage on the derby trail we normally get...none of it is listed, possibly negotiating or just too costly?

Yeah. Kind of... I give Magna a lot of credit though making this event into something that is wholly successful and widely anticipated. When introduced, I thought it was silly and gimmicky. It IS silly and gimmicky, but they promoted it right, and pushed the TV coverage, and made it into a fun day that fans, players and horsemen look forward to.

:D

The problem was the first half. The only thing that went our way was the kick out of bounds call.

and they'll be back. and they WILL win the big one. (to the bs thread this goes  ) Took Cowher 14 years and it looked like he never was going to, but he did.

ps. srry for the thread jack

The timing of the event is ideal, as it sits between the true kick-off on the Derby trail and the the holiday season. So there was a lull, and they filled it. If it were mid-July, it would have stopped after one year.

that doesn't help any of us without HRTV. we'd really rather watch on TV than the computer.:(

31lengths 01-19-2009 07:57 PM

...so NO t.v. network coverage at all until the Derby?

By that NTRA sched, that's how it seems. No national prep coverage this year?

As Math said Dish has both TVG and HRTV.

I ended up adding Dish so now I have both Dish and Directv, I ABHOR, DETEST, HATE, LOATHE Dish.
The whole Dish system, DVR and packages are stupid and costly when compared to Directv, and they don't have nearly the HD channels that Direct has, no local HD and the mid range package I have to have for HRTV only carries CNN. I watch only HRTV and use Direct for all other viewing.

That being said, I don't know where you are in Louisiana but if you can get Cox Cable they have both HRTV and TVG and you can bundle phone, internet etc. Of course I'm over on the northshore so only can get Charter, who now doesn't carry CBS nor Hornets games, not that I watch the hornets, but it's the point.

Back to no HD coverage by ESPN/ABC/NBC I have e-mailed both the NTRA and ESPN, not really expecting an answer but if I get one I'll post it here.

Maybe Steve can get us some info since he knows all the right connections...:p

only drawback is no nfl sunday ticket. but only 17 weeks of nfl, vs 52 weeks of horse racing-and as math said, both racing channels..

i have the opposite feelings on which to get. used to have dtv, now have dish. not worried about hdtv-i bought a tv a few years ago, and like it a lot. see no need to upgrade when i like this one.
i found dish had more that i want to watch, and i can't get locals through dtv. as for bundling, i'm in the boonies, so i have satellite internet as well-only other option was dial up. no thanks! no cable run out here, and nothing else available for tv or 'net.

jpops757 01-21-2009 09:31 AM

Ive tried dish direct and cable. Virizon fois beats them all.

It has alot to do with the HD, once you get HD you won't want to watch regular digital. Dish has the locals but not in HD, Direct has local in HD. And their HD packages are pricey compared to Direct. Additionally thier dvr system is cumbersome, too many settings you must set, not just options if you want. Oh and all these stupid system integrity checks Dish does, or constantly having to download the program guide, just irritating stuff. I do however like the fact you can set 2 tv's off one box, can't do that with Direct.
Right now I can get DSL from Bellsouth/ATT but when we move back down to the river...oh about 5 miles no more DSL will have to go with Satellite like you. And like you living relatively rural I can't just get oh say Cox cable and bundle everything like they can in NOLA. So it just keeps me...:zz:

FTFY...but yes can't wait until it's available in my area..but I think it will be a long time. It would sooooo simplify all my tech needs.

Have to disagree with you. Not sure if it depends on where you live, but I have Dish and get HD local channels. Matter of fact, I've never heard of Dish having local channels without HD, but in your area I guess they do. Also, everything I've heard and seen show Dish has more HD channels than anyone (cable or Direct). Also, Dish's DVR is very solid, very easy to use, and I can't believe anyone would think it's not. As far as prices, every time I compared them, they seemed to be very close. Like I said, it may depend on your location and/or I may be way off base, but I really have no complaints at all with Dish.

Now on to the subject: to have no HD coverage for anything till the Derby, just shows how bad this sport is hurting. Hell, the damn boring ass poker that's on is in HD.

i'm not ant-hd...i'm just anti buying a new tv just to get it, when my tv is fairly new. i'm always way behind the times on new technology anyway...

FGFan 02-03-2009 02:00 PM

Got an e-mail from NTRA today...here's what they said:

We will have eight show this year on ESPN. Four shows prior to the Derby and four shows leading up to the Breeders’ Cup. Our first show will begin on March 21. Stay tuned for the press release. It will be coming out soon.

Fritz Widaman, NTRA Marketing

The only 3 yr. old races that day are at Turfway, Lanes End and Bourbonette, guessing that's what they are covering. But there is also the distaff at AQ. So at least there will be some coverage in HD.

Have to disagree with you there too and since I have both Dish and Direct and you don't, I get to compare the two. As well Direct has added even more HD since I first started this thread. Having both, hands down Direct is the best, only draw back is not having HRTV...but I am patiently working on that with some others. Direct has even discounted me because I have to have dish for one channel. Direct even gave us a disaster discount for Gustav(I have generators so only briefly lost signal during the very rainy periods)...Dish didn't do that as a matter of fact tried to charge me a late fee because the mail got delayed. I have never once payed my bill late with them...had to call them twice to get it removed. Now if I could only get Cox cable it would solve all my tv viewing problems.

Zig...why would you buy a TV in the last couple of years and not have it HD capable even if you didn't use it...HD is the only way to go.
