Coaching Carousel

Another one today that I thought wasn't going to happen just yet.

Mike Shannahan, OUT in Denver as HC....and Coach Pant's favorite Dick Jauron is retained in Buffalo.

Thoughts?

Danzig 12-30-2008 05:42 PM

not surprised. but you have to wonder when a coach gets axed, do they really think there's a better coach out there? apparently they do.....gee, and with cutler having a stronger arm than elway, they had to have been playoff bound. :D

I thought for sure that he'd get a pass based solely on his RB's injury situation. The fact that the owner probably had to keep reading/hearing about the 4-8 Charger's backdooring their way in, sealed the fate of Shanny.

I wonder who they are looking at for a replacement. It has to be someone that is defensive minded as they already have a few nice peices to the puzzle on the offensive side of the ball.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Glassers give a rat's asz about the team as long as the seats are full. He definitely needs to go but unless they can land Shanny, I don't see a better prospect. Plus you can count the minutes until Monty Kifin bails, and with huge holes at QB, WR and an aging D, it isn't the most appealing job out there.

He was there 14 years. Maybe management just thought it was time for a change and this was the ideal time to do it. Can't say I 'm suprised. The Broncos have won a total of one playoff game since they won the Super Bowl 10 years ago. I guess some people feel that since you win a Super Bowl (in his case two) that you are somewhat bulletproof. But the guy had a long sucessful stint in Denver and I am sure he will end up somewhere in the near future.

The fact that Shanahan brought in high salaried defensive players year after year and the defence showed no improvement was the fatal blow. He has gone through Def. C. yearly with no improvement. I think Bowlen never thought he would fix that side of the ball, that's why he let him go.

Fatal blow was when he was told to fire his defensive coord., and he refused. One sentence later in the mortal words of Trump. "You're Fired."

Question?

Anyone surprised the AX hasn't fallen in KC on Herm Edwards as of yet? I'm not a Chief's fan (longtime Redskins fan), the Chiefs were at times competitive, and of course had to deal with some injuries, but still it may be time for a change in coaching there, any thoughts?

They were short on talent and may have a young QB emerging. Not the time to make a move. Next year they win 7 games at minimum.

John Gruden OUT as HC of TB Bucs...

Along with GM Bruce Allen... Good Friggin' Riddance

declansharbor 01-16-2009 06:10 PM

Mariucci doesnt sound too thrilled with the timing of it, for both the coach/gm and the organization. He say's he almost drove off the road en route to the airport upon hearing about it.

Its the teams that fell apart down the stretch that are/were looking elsewhere for new coaching. NYJ, Den, and now TB.

herkhorse 01-16-2009 07:33 PM

Gruden out in Tampa....ooops missed your post Declans

I guess a Super Bowl win doesn't buy you as much as it once did.

SniperSB23 01-16-2009 11:27 PM

This is hilarious. Kiffin leaves them for UT when they are 9-3. They collapse and lost their last four. Apparently all blame goes towards Gruden. So what are they doing now? Hiring the guy that replaced Kiffin!!!!! F...ing morons. Now that douche is going to wind up with the Jets, only good news is it might mean Favre comes back for one more year to ruin them.

docicu3 01-16-2009 11:31 PM

Who says Chuckie didn't force them to fire him.......the Bucs are toast next year after that collapse. By firing him owner does him a favor for the SB he gave him. We will see how broken up he is by all of this....

Bigsmc 01-17-2009 07:14 AM

Firing the douche was two seasons too late.

Winning the Super Bowl with Dungy's team bought him way too many years.

The real key to the deal was kicking Bruce Allen out the door with him. He's easily one of the worse GM's in the league.

I'm willing to sacrifice the next couple years to get both of them out of here. It is an easy trade off.

Glazer said in the paper this morning in not so many words that letting McKay get away was a mistake and that Allen was nothing more than Gruden's mouthpiece and that the next administration will have a defined separation between the roles of the head coach and GM.

As for Gruden, the strong rumor is that the Jets have absolutely no interest in him, that if the Ravens lose they are going after Rex Ryan.

Gruden is rumored to be going to Notre Dame after they buy out Weis' contract.

Agreed.
Sometimes things just get stale.
Shanahan is a good coach.

And in all fairness Denver was lucky to even be in the running
for that division. They had to be one of the most injured teams
in the NFL. This seems to be fairly common for Denver. Maybe
Shanahan needs to find a Pilates instructor.

Jerry Jones said there would be no coaching changes.
So the Defensive coordinator has been fired in Dallas.
And Jason Garrett looks like he may have laid down
a me or TO goes ultimatum to Jerry. Meanwhile Wade
Phillips gets tossed about like he is not even present.
Great fun... total chaos.

MaTH716 01-17-2009 05:24 PM

Spags to the Rams. :(
