Greetings from a new poster

Hello all, a long time handicapper from kentucky and have been listening to Steve for about a year and finally decided I could no loger keep my mouth shut. But, before I begin to start spewing racing form cliches' let me ask a question. What is the name of the handicapping book Steve recommends so heartily? My son is at the University of Kentucky and has somehow discovered Keeneland. An aside to that is: if you are a young man, you have never experienced something like Keenelands Fall meet on a Saturday. Gorgeous co-eds by the hundred count, absolutely incredible. Oh yeah, back on course,, any know?
Thanks and hello again

Joe Buck the sportscaster or Jon Voit's character "Joe Buck" from the movie "Midnight Cowboy"...?

Might not make much difference I guess...

Buck,

Sorry to be slow responding... Welcome. Indeed, "Betting Thoroughbreds" by Steve Davidowitz is my favorite and the book I feel has the most to offer the widest array of horseplayers from neophyte to pretty-experienced. I go back to it often.

Beyer's work is of course invaluable as well (The Winning Horseplayer; Beyer on Speed; Picking Winners; My $50,000 Year at the Races), and Steve Crist's Exotic Betting has joined the elite of handicapping volumes as well.

And then there are the legions of posts offered by the insightful here!

Enjoy... Thanks for coming forward!

I think the book you are referring to is:

My $100,000 year at the Races, by Joseph something or other. Some Italian last name.

I'll send you my new book..
"" This race track as cost me Ten Thousand Dollars, Four Credit Cards & Three wifes, and with my luck... I'll get the wifes back ! ""

Buck 12-17-2008 08:58 PM

thanks all

I was looking for titles for my son, but I am sure I will scan it heavily before I give it to him, then read it before he goes back to UK. I stay pretty busy therefore my handicapping gets rusty. It is hard to jump in and out so Steves show helps me stay current. And, I keep my TVG account charged up just in case. I have a Twinspires account to,,, but, Churchill downs annoys me, so I try not to use it much. Don't get me started on those guys, and I grew up at that track!

joeydb 12-18-2008 06:21 AM

Buck,

Another one I like is "Money Secrets at the Racetrack" by Barry Meadow. It makes an excellent companion or primer for Crist's Exotic Betting. I would actually read them in that order: Meadow, then Crist.

They are two books that I re-read often. They focus more on the betting side of the skill set rather than the handicapping, but both pieces are essential as I'm sure you know.

Glad to hear you are getting your son into the game. It's a great pastime. College was not all that long ago for me -- I'm not yet 40 -- and I find that once my friends are introduced to the game, they invariably see how superior it is to the other forms of gambling we have available to us on the East Coast.

Joe
