Race Fans..........I'm Curious
Since I don't want to overstep my bounds here and start a bunch of different threads, perhaps I can ask my initial questions right here:
1. Who do you consider the best 3 horses of all time? My vote goes to 1.) Secretariat, 2.) War Emblem, 3.) Affirmed 2. Would Alydar be considered the Best Horse To Have Never Won a triple crown race? 3. What horse is considered the best horse to ever breed (based on conbined race records of offspring)? 4. On a scale of 1 - 10, 1 means not difficult at all, and 10 means extremely difficult, what do you rank Afleet Alex's recovery at The Preakness? 5. Who is your favorite horse of all time? Mine is Afleet Alex (I know surprise surprise). |

2. tough....but I'd say no Spectacular Bid comes to mind 3. couldn't tell you 4. 10 5. Silver Charm....that I've seen, The good Dr. Fager in legends and lore |
1. War Emblem???? I hope you mean War Admiral...
2. I'd say yes. 3. Northern Dancer? That Arabian that 90% of todays horses descend from? 4. 9.64 5. Ghostzapper |
1) Secretariat, Spectacular Bid, Skip Away
2) No Skip Away is the best horse to never win a triple crown 3) Storm Cat 4) 10 5) Gander and Butterface (its a close tie) |
War Emblem, OH WOW....You must have had him in the Derby.
I am not going to answer 1 or 2 because it takes alot of thought and consideration BUT 3) Northern Dancer or Raise a Native 4) scale of 1-10, how about 100 5) I can answer this many different ways, but from a FAN perspective it is Zarb's Magic (Arlington legend) |
oh
and welcome to the board
|
Well, I just found my all time horse. never really thought about it but after reading this. Citation passed on my B-day. I read that he won the NJ derby inbetween preak and Belmont? wow. Read this.....
http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00014135.html |
1. Secretariat, Man O'War, Seattle Slew (including the breeding shed)
2. Spectacular Bid 3. I'd say Seattle Slew. 4. 11 5. Secretariat |

1) Man O' War (best ever)
2) why would you folks say Spectacular Bid (he won 2 of them) ~yes, Alydar 3) Bernardini 4) 7 5) Smokey Stover |

LOL, my bad...thought it was triple crown I'd put Dr. Fager in for 2 then |
1. Citation, Ruffian, Secretariat (.... probably should put Man O War but hey... Ruffian gets my vote).
2. No, he was one of a few... 3. Don't know. 4. 10 5. Present day... Rakti From the past..... maybe Coaltown, Affectionately or The Bid. |
I'll just answer #2.
Alydar was a better broodmare sire than Affirmed was. As far as "on the track"...Spectacular Bid. |
best three all time? oh boy... man o war, northern dancer, seattle slew.
best to never win a tc race. i agree about alydar. best horse ever to breed....well, how far back do you want to go? lexington immediately springs to mind. more modern? northern dancer is a legend for good reason...then there's his son danzig. 188 stakes winners(hence my name on here), highest in the world til another son of northern dancer passed him (sadler's wells) and then danzigs son danehill. but danzig still holds the record in north america. 1-10...well, it looked a bad deal for alex, but he made his recovery look easy! lastly...favorite horse? ever?? seattle slew barely. too many to choose from! |

2. How about Buckpasser 3. Mr. Prospector 4. 10 5. Secretariat |
Quote:
4. 8 3. Hoist the Flag - 34% of his offspring were stakes horses. 2. Equipoise? Forego? Seabiscuit didn't start in a Triple Crown race, but these two did. (Forego was fourth in the Derby behind Secretariat.) Are you restricting the choice to TC race starters? Because the field is wide open if you aren't. 1. Kinscem, Ribot, Phar Lap (or did you intend only US horses of the 20th Century?) |
1. Man O' War, Spectacular Bid, Secretariat
2. Spectacular Bid 3. Northern Dancer, Raise a Native, Bold Ruler, Man O' War, and I am particularly fond of Dynaformer although I don't know where he will rank in the grand scheme of things when it is all said and done. 4. 9.90 5. Afleet Alex, Deep Impact, Barbaro, Bernardini, Smarty Jones, Ouija Board, Rock of Gibralter, Lost in the Fog, Gorella, Megahertz, Charismatic, Funny Cide, Lava Man, Silver Charm |
1. Secretariat
Ruffian War Admiral 2. Hard to go against Alydar 3. Seattle Slew 4. 9 5. Smarty Jones |

Ruffian Hail to Reason and Hoist the Flag (... with Bewitch a close 4th) |

1) Kincsem - best horse ever. 2) Secretariat 3) Citation 2) Spetacular Bid in my opinion was the best not to win 3) According to a story I read today Raibow Quest 4) 9.5 5) Awad |
Champions panel got it right, just missed the order IMO.
1- Secretariat 2- Citation 3- Man O'War |
didn't sham break two track records? except for the fact that Big Red still finished ahead of him in the KD and the PS ??
I'll take Sham over Alydar.. but that's no knock on Alydar by any means. |
1) Swaps, Secertariat, Dr. Fager
2) Im guessing this question is related to those who have participated in TC races and I would say yes. 3) I would say numbers wise Hoist the Flag is the most impressive but cant argue with the legacy that is Northern Dancer. 4) 7.5 5) Moccasin, Crimson Saint, and Ruffian. 3 of the fastest fillies of all time... didnt have the honor to be alive while they raced... |
1. Secretariat, Man O'War, Ruffian
2. Sham (poor thing had a monster to deal with) then probably Alydar. 3. Hmmm... Not sure on this one. 4. 8.5 5. My fave? OHHH that is hard. Probably have to go with Winning Colors. |
Quote:
2. I'll go with Forego. Seven eclipse awards, you get a mention! 3. Northerrn Dancer 4. 9 5. Forego. |
1. 1) Man O' War 2) Seattle Slew 3) Secretariat
2. Alydar or Sham 3. Northern Dancer 4. 1- Against that field Afleet Alex could have fallen down, broken both legs, pooped, and been bred and he still would have won by open lengths (I believe AA is one of the most overrated horses by this board, the most underrated is easily Saint Liam, just my opinion). 5. Easy Goer |
1) round table, Secretariat, Sea Bird
2) yes 3) Mr Prospector 4) 8 5) Seattle Slew, Sunday Silence, Medaglia d'Oro |
1. Man O' War, Secretariat, Seattle Slew (I honestly believe that Barbaro could've been up there if he kept racing)
2. Alydar 3. Darley Arabian 4. I don't know 5. Birdstone, Barbaro, and Brian's Time (my list would probably be different if I were older) |
1. Seretariat, Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid.
2. Spectacular Bid 3. Northern Dancer is the most important sire of modern time. 4. 10 on my score card 5. Ack Ack and Precisionist, Because they always brought their A game. Speed, Speed nad more Speed. I have to mention the great John Henry for all time favorite too. |

2) No way Alydar was the best never to win a TC race, though he may have been the best to run in all 3 without winning one. Forego, Cigar, Buckpasser, Dr. Fager, etc, never ran in the TC, but were all better. 3) Northern Dancer produced champions on the track and is the most important "sire of sires" in the last 100 years. 4) 11...regardless of whom he beat that day, it was probably the most remarkable things I have ever seen in a big race. 5) Thunder Gulch, Silver Charm, Spectacular Bid |

2. No, I think Forego was 3. I'd say Northern Dancer 4. 4 5. Go Man Go (you didn't say they had to be TB) |
Answers
1. Secretariat (awesome triple crown)
2. Forego (carried the weight) 3. Ruffian (best filly) Best to never win - Sham Northern Dancer 9.0 Pearl Necklace in NY in the late 70s was my first favorite horse who won stakes for Roger Lauren on the turf... Favorite Barns: Darby Dan Rokeby Stable both no longer around... although the Phillips still race from Darby Dan broodmares... |
1. Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Phar Lap
2. The Bid 3. Northern Dancer 4. 10 5. Non-racehorse: Big Ben; racehorse: Seattle Slew |
Guess I'll answer as well:
1. Secretariat, Man o' War, Count Fleet 2. Spectacular Bid, Phar Lap 3. Northern Dancer or Mr. Prospector...I think I saw a stat that said something like 2/3 of all horses bred in the US today have one or the other in their blood somewhere. This would be where AP Indy comes in (best sire out there with neither Mr. P nor ND in the bloodlines ANYWHERE....$300k is a bargain if you ask me, but I digress.) 4. 10 5. Shaconage, Afleet Alex |
