Larry Colmus

This is the guy for the Churchill Downs announcer job. Clear, concise, and accurate calls without any foreign accent!

Coach Pants 11-21-2008 08:32 PM

Never heard of him.

cowgirlintexas 11-21-2008 08:37 PM

Me either...but thats not saying much :D

VOL JACK 11-21-2008 08:41 PM

Wow, you guys and gals need to watch some races. Colmus is all over the place. Gulfstream, Monmouth, Suffolk, and Meadowlands.

I even wonder why he would want the CD job. Seems like he has a pretty sweet rotation of tracks.

I am not sure that those 3 should be in the same sentence as Churchill.

Nothing like being a man of your word.....

It is a shocker.

The funniest thing was that during the contest he had the audacity to question whether or not you were honorable.

turf fan 11-21-2008 09:51 PM

This post has obviously changed directions. I want Larry Colmus as the announcer at Churchill Downs! The Derby does not need to be called by some arrogant Australian!

cowgirlintexas 11-21-2008 10:03 PM

Beware of any poster with the word "fan" in their name;)

Can you spell Larry another way than L-A-R-R-Y? OK, Collmus has 2 Ls. I still believe he is better than the previous options.

It doesnt matter who gets the job at CD, i'll still be hearing Tom Durkin call the Derby.

It has to be better than the Jersey circuit. Racing during the week at Monmouth is awful. Mostly cheap claimers with short fields. The turf races are good, unless they come off for weather. Not many MTO entries. Nothing gets the blood pumping like those 4 horse fields in the slop. It doesn't get any better when they go north to the Swamp. Then you have the Graded Stakes races which Chuchill had (I think) 26 in the Spring vs 13 for the Monmouth meet. I am not saying that Churchill is the greatest meet in the world, but it is definitley above the Monmouth/Meadowlands circuit. Not to mention that you get to call (argueably) the biggest race of the year (I know, not on the national telecast, blah blah blah).

I live in Jersey! About 20 minutes from Monmouth and I take my boys there all the time. I love the venue/atmosphere, but the racing on many of the days is just not good. I didn't say anything bad about Collmus. I like him very much and have had the pleasure to meet and talk to him a couple of times. He was an extremely nice guy. But with all that being said, I feel that there is no comparison between tracks. To me it's not even close.

Vic gets excited whether it's a 10k claimer or a Graded stake. He will also sometimes bring a little comedy to a call.

They both have their own styles that they are very good at. I just think that Vic is more entertaining than Larry. I think they are solid and I like them both.
