Churchill Announcer
Who is he? Don't like him at all.

Robin Leach Jr.

Exactly...I can see him say "luxurious ride of the famous"

Michael Wrona. Aussie who calls GG
I thought he was funny when after the 4th, he said Leparoux could win on a broomstick :D |
Wrona's calls are good and some are hilarious, he used to call Fairgrounds and a major track I believe, I was looking at some old youtube vids and to my surprise I heard his voice calling a major race but unfortunately I don't remember which one it was.

He's actually pretty funny on the fly and has made comments like that on numerous occasions......seems like CD is still recovering from losing such a great voice when Luke Kryteboss (sp?) died earlier this summer. A very tough act to follow as the guy became a legend in the 10 years or so he called the derby. |
I 'think' he used to do Arlington way back, he does Golden Gate now.....

Wikapedia for what it is worth...
Michael Wrona has called some historic thoroughbred races during his calling career in the United States. In 1996, Wrona called the Arlington Citation Challenge at Arlington Park, in which Cigar won his 16th consecutive race. The win tied the previous record of nearly 50 years held by Citation. On December 10, 1999 at Hollywood Park, Wrona called the race that saw Laffit Pincay Jr pass Bill Shoemaker for most career victories by a jockey. Nearly seven years later, on December 1, 2006, Wrona was the announcer for the race at Bay Meadows in which Russell Baze passed Pincay for the same honors. Looks like he has called races at Hollywood,Lone Star and Retama as well as Bay Meadows,GG,FG and Arlington as said above. The guy gets around and that "Racing" thing at the start is probably his signature if such can be so. |
Just seems to clash with Churchill Downs. Too frilly for me
|
I heard they are looking at hiring Dave Johnson as their full time caller.
Ick. |

That's all nice, but did he ever call a Pepper's Pride race? |

Something tells me he is not acquainted with New Mexico bred..... |
They should hire the fat guy from TVG that does impersonations. Have him do Karl Childers only. It would be better than listening to this crap. Jesus christ this guy sounds like he's 5 years away from having his balls drop.

When CD bought the Fair Grounds in 2004 they decided not to hire him because he was requesting $500 a day. They also didn't like his work ethic because he would show up 5 minutes before the 1st race and would be gone prior to the nightcap being official. Having said all that, I consider him a top tier announcer. I just think he rubs people the wrong way. I was surprised they are considering him for the position knowing his past.
|
Wrona may be the guy who once referred to a longshot front runner that held his lead late as "staying like a mother-in-law!"

I think he's the front-runner

Wrona is a very good racecaller, one of the best.
Why would him leaving after the last race matter? You think hes going to hangout in the booth all night long and look over the track, someone going to steal it? The guy is very good, and the guy from England is very good. 500 a day seems cheap to me. Should get 100 per race. |
kurt becker dammit..
|
Hes very accurate and very boring. He puts me to sleep
|
This whole tryout business begs the question, why would guys like Wrona and Collmus need to "audition" for the job? Don't they have enough credentials to just get it right off the bat?
NT |
Collums and Becker have put more people to sleep than Kavorkian
|
I actually like Kurt Becker.....I too don't see any problem with a announcer leaving after the last race....I knew a top announcer that would try to beat out everyone cashing in their tickets after the last race so he didn't have to sit in traffic leaving the track.....
|
maybe hrfan should send his resume.
|
Terry Wallace wasn't offered an audtion? I'm shocked!
|
Bogey definitely off-par
Anybody is entitled to express an opinion about my racecalling style, but Bogey is wrong with his/her authoritative declaration of my Fair Grounds salary, AND VENTURING TOWARDS LIBEL CONCERNING MY WORK ETHIC. I take great exception to the post, and could call upon countless references to refute such outlandish, unfounded claims...

Ok who snitched?

This could actually turn into a good thread....
