24 horse fields are always fun. I'll go with the 7. ;)

Alesandra Volta
$20 win/place |
C'est La Guerre, Nom du Jeu, Prize Lady, Boundless. :D
Hmm, maybe a bit too patriotic. My top 5, trying to be more objective: C'est La Guerre Mad Rush Nom du Jeu Profound Beauty Septimus But if any of the Kiwis win I'll be happy. |
I'm really looking forward to watching the Melbourne Cup broadcast on HRTV. I thoroughly enjoyed last year's edition. I can only hope the powers that be at ESPN, and any other entity that produces live thoroughbred racing for TV in this country, will watch and learn. The Aussies do it right. It's about the horses, jockeys, and the betting down under. My favorite part of the broadcast is when the track announcer announces the "stars of the day", and introduces the Cup jockeys, like we announce the lineups for a World Series game.
|
The locals don't look particularily strong this year though they should be respected, I'm more partial to the Europeans and Kiwi's this year.

Melbourne cup is way hard to have a serious punt as you have overseas horses which are hard to line up against the local lot, but this year i have to say i agree with
" CSC::The locals don't look particularily strong this year though they should be respected, I'm more partial to the Europeans and Kiwi's this year." So im Going for a" Boxed Trifector" which means 3 can finish in any order so long as its the top 3 so im going 1,3,5 to win the :tro: |
I think the key here is the weather, if it does rain as forecast, Septimus has a chance, but I still think the weight will stop him.
Surprisingly, of the Euros, I think Bauer has the best chance, he looked solid in his warm up race and looks to be thriving down under, he'll be a lovely price as well.. Mad Rush style will mean he will probably find traffic problems but he is way too short. Honolulu is very interesting but he is drawn too wide and could be sent to the slaughter to aid Septimus.. Alessandro Volta is a big monkey of a horse, first time blinkers may help, but I doubt it. Profound Beauty is by the dangerous Weld, but I would be shocked if she was good enough and she is a truly terrible price. Of the others, Zipping and Master O'Reilly have the class and pace to be there of thereabouts at the end. But the Kiwis look to have a few Aces as well.. Bauer / Zipping / Master O'Reilly |

Wow isn't this refreshing, bringing in the jockies into the stewards room and televising it on world wide TV and listening to the reasoning of the Trainers, Jocks, and Stewards on the challenge.

|
90-1 over 26-1 on the american tote... WOW
|
bart cummings
that dude just gets his best ready for the cup. He didn't care about those last 4 races. We handicapped those last 4 races like dummies and made viewed 90-1 and he just trained his best up to the cup for his 12th mel. cup win.
|
VIEWED .... BLAKE ... ! Well done!
(of course I never even considered him ... Bart gets you every time!) Gawd, I love Cup day! How cool was that? Gotta love $35K supers <g> |
Look at the screwy N. American pool Melbourne Cup exotic payoffs:
10 $186.00 $57.70 $29.10 12 . $24.10 $16.40 4 . . $25.20 Wager Type Winning Numbers Paid $2.00 Exacta 10-12 $2864.70 $1.00 Quinella 10-12 $341.65 $1.00 Trifecta 10-12-4 $45979.40 $1.00 Superfecta 10-12-4-2 $17601.10 |
Amazing stuff from Bart, what a trainer.
Really happy with my boy CLG. Next year maybe? |
Another wild Cup! And here, for no particular reason other than the obvious.. Luca Cumani's daughter Francesca!

The Melbourne Cup is always memorable, Big fields and big payoffs all night!
|
just read that Viewed won that race on 3 days rest!! From the DRF...
"Viewed had just raced on Saturday, finishing last of 11 in a 1 1/4-mile race that produced three runners who came back in the Cup just three days later. Although Viewed, 5, had won 7 of 23 starts, he had not finished better than seventh in his last four races." WOW! |
Can't believe Bauer couldnt get up in time but congrats to Cummings - always keeps a fair bit up his sleeve..
Very odd to see Coolmore do what they did. They should have controlled that race, but instead, they finished 4th last, 2nd last and last!! Bring a horse down there that loves fast ground!!! |
