eye opening conversation

just got off the phone with a friend of mine..hes the mgr of a sports book at a major hotel in vegas.we were conversing about trends and whats hot for him at the book..he says horseracing is getting a stronger play at his place in the last year or so..nascar and ufc have taken a downturn as there is no star power as of the older days.of course football and college hoops are allways strong hes seen considerable jump in horseraces at his book i asked him why he thinks that is..he says the prime people are scavs types mid to late 20s up to 50 s types that have some education..and that a large portion of them are come backs done the poker thing and find the horses a better game..

i thought it was interesting..and hope its true...

blackthroatedwind 10-07-2008 07:35 PM

That is interesting. Hope it's true as well.

Not surprising that a lot of people eventually realized they were in over their heads playing poker.

pgardn 10-07-2008 07:38 PM

I never get the draw to poker.

Its fun, but it gets very old, very quickly.

Mortimer 10-07-2008 07:46 PM

What about Bingo and HangMan?

blackthroatedwind 10-07-2008 07:46 PM

You have to be very clever to be successful playing poker.

Mortimer 10-07-2008 07:55 PM

The key to success in draw poker is knowing exactly what you need to draw and how to do it.

yes thats very true ,the huge influx of wpt and wsp time on the tv had jump started the poker world..but in the end its a very tough game if played vs an exp player/players.imo

And money.

The great thing about quantum physics is you can
be bad at it and not know it. But in a parallel universe,
you can be a leading authority...

And not realize it.

not if you aim low enough.

stop trying to beat the best and concentrate on beating the worst.

in horse racing i have to beat the average consensus plus a rake. in poker i can choose my opponents. huge advantage.

it's like betting in a wagering pool where good players are excluded.

it isn't clever. but it requires an egoless evaluation of your own skills and a willingness to walk away from better players.

You're right.

Its also a frkkn marathon.

Cant set in a seat that long.

Dont poker players get some sort
of specific type of butt rot?

GPK 10-07-2008 09:13 PM

If I had a $1 for every hand of poker I played online yesterday...:zz:

patience can't be overvalued.

if you've got a plane to catch, try slots. same likelihood of success.

better players rely on the same law of large numbers that casino's do. in the short run it's all about luck. but play long enough against a weaker player and the result is inevitable.

stop thinking of it as gambling and look at it as chess for money mixed with psychology.

i wouldn't recommend it as a career for anyone but it's an entertaining distraction.

nothing is better than sitting at an online table filled with bad players complaining the site is rigged yet unable to walk away from an allegedly fixed game before they're broke.

that's the level of opponent you want.

it's rewarding on more than a financial level.

that's when I hit the sportsbook to wager on races more out there. don't want to start a table game, as might not have the time to follow thru. go to the racebook, get a drf and play the various tracks, to kill some time until you have to go to the airport.

although, some of the daily poker tourneys in vegas are good. blinds go up rapidly, so entire tourney takes 60-120 min (with breaks!!!). Longest one I played in, made it to the final table and took about 2 1/4 hours and all of them I've played in give a 10-15 min break each hour. Most were in the 90 min range and I've cashed at a very large percentage of them.

Mortimer 10-07-2008 09:54 PM

Oh boy.

GPK 10-07-2008 10:16 PM

Keep up the good work. I took a major nap this evening, I might give the Feurgeson a shot. Nothing big tonight.

GPK 10-07-2008 10:36 PM

I enjoy the ko's too. Im in a 90 player now...but this one isnt ko

SniperSB23 10-07-2008 10:42 PM

I can't get on Full Tilt as snipersb23, I can get emailed a temporary password but then it doesn't work. I haven't been on there in about 5 years since it was first starting. Funny thing is I can get on as Paris Hilton, the second account I made as a joke to mess with people.

Full Tilt, I'm SHIPemMATE

and on Pokerstars, I'm TrentCole1

Play sparingly, usually on nights that I have off the next day. Play the Feurgeson's and Midnight Madness' usually. Throw in cash games here and there. Nothing beats playing live though. 2-5 n/l, hitting the Taj for about 10 hours and watch the table carousel. Will join a tournament if the structure is right. Weekends are the best, esp. summer holiday weekends.:$: in the bank!!

I was forced to make the move to FT after PStars started giving me the mariggamaroo. Which site do you use?

Nothing now, used to be on Full Tilt all the time but got bored of it and my firepay account expired which in turn automatically locked me out of Full Tilt. Firepay wanted me to fax them all sorts of stuff so I never bothered. I guess that is why snipersb23 isn't valid anymore. I'm just playing a play money tourney now with my backup name to see if I get the itch back.
