Bobby Neuman would say "it's too close to call" when the winning margin is a half a length. |

Since I am unfamiliar with most of the announcers, I will vote for Larry Collmus. My favorite call from him thus far is in this year's infamous Monmouth Stakes where at the beginning of the race he said, "And Big Brown broke like a rocket." |
I didn't realize Travis was such a pup.

well, obviously they should just battaglia to come back.
or NOT!! |
Why not Kurt Becker?

My vote goes to my fellow Englishman Mark Johnson :D

I don't think these guys are in contention for the job, just filling in..right? Still think Dooley leaves AP and they bring Bill Downe's jr to Arlington. Although..I'm not sure Dooley would want to leave...nice long meet

I think Bill Sr. should be given a shot:tro: They Harry Carey of horse racing:eek: |
Very cool for Travis Stone.
Congrats Travis. Whew. No Richard Grunder. That means he remains at Tampa. I was almost scared to click the link. |

Travis has been doing an excellent job at Louisiana Downs, I wanted to mention that.
Collmus is consistently good, one of my favorites... long term, I'd vote for Kurt Becker or Travis Stone (or me!) |

"This showcase of talent is a unique and mutually beneficial way for us to introduce some of the outstanding worldwide candidates to Churchill Downs, our horse racing fans and the city of Louisville," Gates said. "Our committee will reconvene at season's end and, based on positive reviews, I think there's a good chance that our next announcer will come from this group. I would expect a final decision before year's end." |

yeah, i put on the race lst nite...and then remembered with horror who the race caller was....ugh. i never watch turfway racing because of him. |
How about we do something RADICAL and don't hire anyone to calls the races? Use the money to install TRAKUS for ACCURATE screen displays and DATA (works really well at DMR, where the MUMBLING LOW TALKER Denman is always on MUTE). Use what's left to STREAM the races LIVE on the web. Those in it for ENTERTAINMENT purposes will disagree, of course.
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr |
i never viewed the announcer as being there to entertain, moreso to inform. maybe they could get an announcer and trakkus?
and i can't stand denman. i try to hit the mute when the gates open, so as to be spared his growl of 'and away they go'. |
i think CD's next announcer WILL come from these five, i'm rooting for TRavis!!

I'd completely understand what's going on without an announcer, as long as the graphics that show the first four horses are accurate and the fractions show up on the upper right or left corner.
For me, the announcer is good for entertainment. But I have good enough eyes that I can track my horse without him. |
RACING!....Michael Wrona

John Dooley is not a candidate for the Churchill job. He never even applied.
I am obviously a friend of Travis' and am hopeful he gets the job. (provided Andy Serling doesn't want it) NT |
Travis Stone out of those 5. Give the kid a chance.

Interesting concept at Churchill Downs
Congratulations to all five candidates for Churchill Downs race calling gig.
I will openly admit that I am biased in favor of Travis Stone. He brings rare mix of youth, experience and maturity. Travis really reaches out and makes connection with racing fans and handicappers -- both on-line and in person. He and I have traded message over last two Louisiana Downs meets and I enjoy his perspective on thoroughbred racing today. His youth (24 years old), experience (race calling at Louisiana Downs), and maturity (genuine student of thoroughbred racing since grade school) present Churchill Downs with unique opportunity to attract next generation of patrons. CD's approach is novel and will garner attention during its upcoming fall meet. Go, Travis, Go! John G. Dooley is current CDI employee and does excellent job at Fair Grounds and Arlington Park. His brand value may have greater worth through his continuing work at these two historic venues rather than moving to CD job. Unless CDI or he makes statement, no one will know reason (or reasons) that he was not included in this group of race callers. Personally, I am glad that John will continue calling races at Fair Grounds each winter. |
If he gets the job, will Travis be discussing the state of the economy between races??:$: :$:
Good Luck Travis....hope you get the gig:tro: |
good luck travis ..but id like to see kurt becker get it
|
Travis Johnson it is.
|
Regardless of who gets the job, it is a great compliment to Travis that after announcing full time for under two years he is even being considered for the position. He's already a big winner.
