The "Travers Cooler"

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – New York Racing Association President and CEO Charles Hayward, far left, and NYRA Executive Vice-President Hal Handel, far right, toast Tony and Gloria Falco of nearby Guilderland, NY, with the “Travers Cooler,” the new official drink of the 139th Travers Stakes presented by Shadwell Farm. The Falcos were the winners of a “Toast the Travers” recipe contest which drew 140 entrants. Made with mint leaves, lemon, Absolut Citron, Triple Sec and lemonade, the Travers Cooler is served in a commemorative, souvenir Travers presented by Shadwell Farm glass and is available at Saratoga Race Course and area restaurants.

Travers Cooler Recipe

1 part vodka

1/2 part triple sec

Lemonade

5-7 mint leaves

Lemon wedge or slice for garnish

Muddle mint 5 mint leaves in bottom of glass, add ice, vodka, triple sec and lemonade. Shake, pour into rocks glass and garnish with remaining 2 mint leaves and lemon.

That sounds dreadful...

Mike 08-19-2008 07:23 PM

The drink sounds pretty good, similar to the Mike's Hard Lemonade drinks, only with better ingredients along with the Triple Sec (I think Mike's Hard Lemonade uses just vodka and powdered lemonade).

With the souvenir glass, filled, with the drink, what price are we talking at the track on Travers Day? I can't see the glasses well from the distance photographed, they look pretty modest in size

$15 or so?

Scav 08-19-2008 07:25 PM

They had the Arlington Millionaire this Arlington Million, i didn't get a chance to taste it but it looked damn good.....

Fearless Leader 08-19-2008 07:33 PM

With all the problems surrounding NYRA, this is what these two geniuses are spending their time focusing on....no wonder things are as they are. It's the fans and the horseman that need a drink to deal with all the nonsense.:zz:

Gander 08-19-2008 07:54 PM

I'm pretty sure the drink is a result of a contest put out by NYRA where people submitted ideas for what will become the official Travers drink. This wasnt invented by anyone who works for NYRA, although I am sure knowing how they like to drink, they will become experts at sampling it to perfection.
I think the mint leaves ruin the drink and it would be prefect without them.

The Florida Derby "Beachcomber"-

1.5 oz Vodka
splash of Dark Rum
6 oz Frank's Energy Drink
Serve with slice of orange over ice

:D

Kasept 08-19-2008 08:23 PM

Having gone to the trouble of running a drink recipe contest and coming up with "Cooler" as the principal name, wouldn't it have made sense to call it the "Canoe Cooler" or even just "Travers Canoe"... thereby tying it to the race's major historical theme? They could add to the appeal by making up stir sticks/mint muddlers in the shape of canoe paddles..

If I'm betting on Travers Day, the last thing I'm gonna buy is a drink called the "Travers Cooler". Talk about asking for bad luck...no thanks.

"Durkin's Piss"

philcski 08-19-2008 08:58 PM

Actually I think the most appropriate name for this year would be "Adirondack Rain" :(

Alan07 08-19-2008 08:59 PM

''The Arrrrrrrr!''

Rudeboyelvis 08-19-2008 09:14 PM

The term "Travers Cooler' should be reserved solely for Dr. Swinesmeller's pick to win :p

Ridiculous, they took the first drink I made while raiding my parent's liquor cabinet and added mint and a garnish to it, how fricken creative.

I like the recipe, not crazy about the name though. It's great for those who can't decide mojito or lemonade. :D

Steve, you have way too much time on your hands. Forget all this stuff. Go upstairs to the bar just before the caroselle above your tent. There is a woman bartender who makes a great Saratoga Margarita.
