On grass today?

Please!!

zippyneedsawin 08-14-2008 05:41 AM

That would be nice. Not a lot of rain on the radar right now, but the forecast calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms in the area pretty much all day. This is getting old.

parsixfarms 08-14-2008 08:22 AM

I can't speak to all the races, but I know that the 8th is off the turf.

blackthroatedwind 08-14-2008 08:34 AM

They will be off today, for certain, and from the looks of things, through tomorrow ( I suppose there is a chance we keep the stake on soft turf ). Frankly, considering Friday's forecast, I doubt we will be on the turf before Sunday if not later.

I agree. Can't see it getting taken off unless the track floods between now and then.

Gander 08-14-2008 02:09 PM

Going to rain all day tomorrow and hard :D

They'll do whatever it takes to keep the Sword Dancer on the turf. Its a Grade 1. If its slippery, so what.

Handicap it for soft turf.

Given what's transpired so far, I highly doubt this is the mindset of 'they'.

I think NYRA should announce that they'll be NO MORE TURF RACING at SAR and stop wasting the time of turf handicappers.

Get it the **** over with.

Save your precious courses for next summer and fall workouts of horses stabled up there.

What's ironic is that when they do run on the turf it's all claimers and maiden races.

How could this situation have been any worse?

Gander 08-14-2008 02:50 PM

It would actually be really neat if they ran a race like the Sword Dancer on dirt. I wonder if any MTO's are entered?

TheSpyder 08-14-2008 02:56 PM

I have no idea what all of you are talking about. I started this thread because I was looking for some weed.

What are you thinking?

No MTO's.

Gander 08-14-2008 03:46 PM

Thanks Joey.

Is there a rule you cant have MTOs for a Graded Stakes? Or did it just happen that no MTO's happened to enter?

Why couldnt a horse just enter the race like any other horse, not as a MTO, but truly the trainer would only run if the race came off the turf, and just end up scratching if the race stayed on the turf?

Whats the benefit of being an MTO?

They would have to have nominated in the first place which the deadline was like 2 weeks ago so would have seemed a giant waste of money.

Somehow, I am getting the idea that you have an agenda. I had last Fri/Sat/Sun off to go the track and this Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun and might wind up only going 2 of those 8 days so I certainly have my problems with the off the turf races. But to possibly place the fault on the NYRA for this one is redonkulous. For all their faults they are at least intelligent enough to know that every race they take off the turf costs them money. It is too bad you aren't as intelligent as they are to see that or you are too blinded by your agenda to post anymore intelligently than Sumitas.

MY AGENDA is that I play only turf and thus the off the turf BS has cost me a ton of money, as I counted on playing SAR this summer and not some of the other tracks. (Won't be making this mistake again in the future.)

If you took your head out of your ass, you (and some of the other 'tradionalists' on this board, who basically accept the standard **** without complaint) might realize that SAR (and BEL) has TWO turf courses. It's amazing what two courses and creative use of RAILS would do in a situation such as the present. Unfortunately, NYRA lacks the ability to get creative.

We wouldn't want to ruin the courses for all those FALL workouts, would we?

BTW, it was raining last night, yet they still managed to get that football game in. Go figure.

You're convienently overlooking the safety issue of running on extremely wet and soft turf, especially with 2YO's. Do you ride your bike much in the rain? Doubt it.

I understand your frustration but you really need to understand the magnitude of rain they have gotten.. The FN place is a swamp.. It has rained about 18" so far...Everyday it raind at least 2".. I was sitting near the NYRA guys and trust me they are as frustrated as you. It's unfair to punish them when in this specific case there is absolutely NO CHOICE.. They aren't saving the turf courses the courses are simply overwhelmed with an incredible amount of water. Plus even when it doesn't rain it hasn't been hot to help dry out the course. They would need to get helicopters in there twice a day to have a fighting chance. I left this morning and the forecast was again very dodgey.. Sometime NYRA baies the turf but in this case it's in G-ds hands not theirs.

I know this may be laughable, but has anyone ever proposed any type of tarp system to keep the turf courses covered when they aren't running? Obviously a very large one time expense to make it, but it should last for years and would just require the labor to roll and un-roll.

Aqueduct covers the turf in March to create a greenhouse effect and get the grass growing during the late stages of winter and or early spring. I think you have to expose the grass to sun light so it would have to be a clear vinyl
