I'm gonna be sick.....

Loved how he was lugging out in the stretch.....that's his last race or the greatest play against in the Travers.....EVER!!!!!!!!
if he goes....more "Big Crap" talk the next few weeks.

He won, bearing out a lot in the stretch.

Coach Pants 08-03-2008 05:25 PM

I loved watching him win and the celebration because of threads like this.

Whaaah bad people win races. Like that is something new.

ALostTexan 08-03-2008 05:26 PM

I thought he looked like total sheet. Never should have struggled to win against anyone in that field.

cowgirlintexas 08-03-2008 05:26 PM

Guess his feet were bothering him:rolleyes:

robfla 08-03-2008 05:27 PM

so what. he lugged out. He always lugs out. how does that make him a play against next time??

Danzig 08-03-2008 05:27 PM

if i was ieah, i'd fire desormeux immediately. big brown looked beat on the turn, just like in the belmont.
but kent, unlike in new york, kept after the horse-and they managed to eke out a win. makes me wonder what would have happened had kent done his JOB last time out, and ridden the damn horse!

as for the desire to take on curlin, they had better look elsewhere for their thrills. the chestnut would eat him for lunch.

Phalaris1913 08-03-2008 05:27 PM

I can't call that a strong effort. Up until fairly late in the stretch, it really looked like he was going to lose and in the effort of producing a furlong or so of enough run to win, he lugged out halfway across the track.

Nothing to do with the connections, he ain't that great of a horse....off the board next out or retired.

combined with him being all out to beat coal play? this was not the dominant effort that he showed in florida and kentucky.

He doesn't have to be close to anything resembling a GOOD horse to beat any 3 year old in training. It's already August and there isn't a single 3 year old colt worth a bottle of piss compared to past champions.

ArlJim78 08-03-2008 05:31 PM

looked to me like Coal Play came back to Big Brown, more than it was Big Brown running him down.

robfla 08-03-2008 05:32 PM

coal play ran his eyeballs out. Call me crazy, I thought Big Brown ran a very game race.

definitely

MaTH716 08-03-2008 05:34 PM

Way to go Kent, that's right you are #1. Balls against the wall all out to catch a horse that ran 3rd in an optional claimer last out. Enjoy retirement BB.

That was the first time Coal Play went that far, which is a 100% valid reason for him to tire in the end.

I agree with that 100% too.

I don't see why anyone should bother to keep a horse in training if this is how the public greets it.

If the mere thought of watching a horse run makes one gag, why bother to watch?

He ran an okay 1:48.1 off a layoff. I've never seen anyone say he's the second coming of Secretariat.

The horse is the Derby and Preakness winner. They brought him back. Yeah, to protect the shed value, so what? It's August and he's still running. Good! Made the race far more interesting.

Geesh! Enjoy this race, enjoy the next prep race, enjoy the Classic and bet against him if you want! :)

pgardn 08-03-2008 06:39 PM

I thought Coal Play ran a good mile.

onebadbeast 08-03-2008 06:43 PM

He Was Layed Off............what Do You Cynics Want? A Win Is A Win Is A Win! Sour Grapes For All..................

i have. after the Florida derby and before the belmont he was touted as one of the greatest ever. Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed were all compared to him.

layoffs have never been a problem for Big Brown.

Rudeboyelvis 08-03-2008 07:08 PM

Apparently no Winstrol this time either (if you believe IEAH)...He did what he had to do, nothing more, although he galloped out like he want a helluva a lot more... I'm thinking that was the last we see of him unfortunately...He's the class of the 3yo's no doubt and can look forward to the next generation of unsound speed types with bad feet :zz:

thing is, i've seen him compared to some very good and great horses. pointing out that he didn't quite run up to some folks expectations doesn't mean we aren't sporting, or didn't enjoy the race. i enjoyed watching a horse almost beat big brown. didn't make me gag at all.

altho i did have a moment when dick dutrow said 'babe' to j edwards. :D

Eight Weeks Since Last Race, Bb Did Just Enough To Win Even Though Looked Rusty. Good Fractions And Pace By Coal Play,
This Race Was What Bb Needed. Watch Out All You Naysayers, I'll
Take Some Side Bets If He Goes In Travers. Bb Is Back

I also think he will be retired after todays performance. Needing a race or not, I thought he was very unimpressive today against a bad field. The horse does have heart, but it seemed to be more of Coal Play hitting a wall than BB reeling him in. This is the same Coal Play that burned up alot of money in a opt claimer last out. Big Brown will go down as a good horse that won 2/3 rds of the TC in a very weak year for the 3 year olds. I do think that there is an outside chance that you do see him at the BC. They would have a built in excuse if he should run up the track, but I would be shocked to see him at the Spa.

Not a bad payday for BB. Especially since you put the fork in him after his easy workout after the Belmont. Why the hate....

Indian Charlie 08-03-2008 07:52 PM

From Dutrow in the DRF:

Though the ultimate goal for Big Brown is the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Oct. 25, where Big Brown will run before then remains undecided. Dutrow said if it was up to him, the $1 million Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 23 wouldn’t be Big Brown’s next start.

"I wouldn’t do it, because it looked like he put in one hell of a race today," Dutrow said. "To run him back so quickly, it might not be in his best interests."

pointman 08-04-2008 10:19 AM

I think it is a little early to give up on BB yet, sure he had to dig hard and have the leader come back to him to get up, but it is plausible that he needed the race. However, you may remember that Curlin finished third in this spot last year and we all know where he went from there. That being said, right now Curlin would crush BB.

King Glorious 08-04-2008 04:51 PM

IEAH is likely to run Court Vision and maybe another horse in the Travers. That's because they aren't running Big Brown. I don't see why some people are giving him a pass because it was off a layoff. This is a horse that dominated his maiden race then won his second start off of a really long layoff so obviously, he can handle running well fresh. That 1:10 and change work before this race also signaled to me that fitness wasn't the issue here.
