The local TV stations are saying it may hold off until late afternoon into the evening. Maybe we will get lucky and have some grass racing.

Pouring here in Albany right now, looks from the radar like Saratoga may be getting spared the worst.

http://www.weather.com/weather/map/i...MapLayer=radar

If this is it though we'll be fine for tomorrow, but any extra moisture today will just make the turf unusable a lot quicker tomorrow whenever it does start to rain.

On and off rain here right now. . .

sumitas 07-22-2008 05:16 PM

It is unfortunate when a track turns into a quagmire due to the rain. Hope the weather is decent.

This is a look back at the horrific track conditions at last year's BC. In case anyone forgot.

No one forgot, one note. Just like no one has forgotten the embarrassing sideshow that was the last two Keeneland meets. Are you really pulling this crap at the mere mention of a potential wet track at Saratoga on opening day?

sumitas 07-22-2008 05:50 PM

Excuse me. Maybe you didn't forget. Others might have. For those that care, note the strung out field in the video. Most horses in that race did not want to be there.

Let's see:

1) competitive cards

2) best video in the game

3) online streaming video AND replays

4) TRAKUS --for ACCURATE data

Nothing 'embarrassing' about any of this. Keep it coming.

Not being able to show your own replays or have a clue as to how to stream your live feed or offering just about the least accurate data in the business, NOW, that's EMBARRASSING. Not to mention mid '50's technology.

That's awesome. They give you lots of data that's almost entirely useless because of the surface, instead of just a little bit.

Keeneland's website is great, no doubt, and it's way better than anything NYRA has. However, none of that means a damn thing when the surface changes with every breeze that rolls through the area and transforms terrible horse after terrible horse into graded stakes winners. I'd rather have 1950's technology and a reliable surface than Space Odyssey type **** for a pathetic surface.

Yeah, I'm sure you honestly thought that this place was teeming with people that had no recollection of LAST YEAR'S BREEDERS' CUP.

I disagree. There's never a case where more precise data is useless.

I agree of course. That's why I changed it from 'completely useless' to 'almost entirely useless'. I love Keeneland's site, but all of the stats and gadgets mean nothing to me since I don't play their circus of a track.

All the NYers are all puffed up and thumpin it on the table in rhythm like a barbershop quartet.

Enjoy your meet.

Stall Mucker 07-22-2008 07:31 PM

Rain, off the turf, good weather, on the turf, hot painful humidity doesn't matter. We're here all 36 days (nights) & more.

It's Christmas in summer in Saratoga. Enjoy it all, it goes fast.

herkhorse 07-23-2008 07:07 AM

pouring here right now, 60 mi. west of Saratoga

hockey2315 07-23-2008 07:35 AM

O ya it's getting worse. . .

Norfolk 07-23-2008 08:10 AM

I just came from the track and it is very, very wet. I saw them seal it last night but with the works this morning it will be a wet track. I don't think they have called off the turf races yet but if they haven't they probably will.

parsixfarms 07-23-2008 09:06 AM

4th race is off the turf. Don't know about the others.

alphanumeric1 07-23-2008 09:19 AM

Jeremy Rose named on Big Brown

The NYRA Scratch board still shows the 9-3-07 closing day changes right now (10:15 AM) and under Jockey changes, J. Rose is named on Big Brown! LOL

Yeah, I was laughing at that. If someone told Kent D that day that the jockey change just netted him his Derby horse he would have assumed you meant him getting the mount on Maimonides. Imagine if some top jock got the mount instead of Rose? Kent probably never would have got to ride him.

sumitas 07-23-2008 09:47 AM

It is unfortunate. The quagmire rain causes on the old dirt surfaces.

Yeah, that was the great thing about the Santa Anita cushion track, it did so well in the rain.

SniperSB23 07-23-2008 10:02 AM

Sloppy and sealed, off the turf

Gander 07-23-2008 10:09 AM

Its a mess here today and there is no sign of letting up. Unfortunate for opening day but what can you do? Just take a bunch of short priced horses and have a few drinks. Hopefully Whitney Day wont be ruined by this weather. I cant wait to see AP Arrow and Rising Moon strut their stuff.

.......yeah, what could be better:rolleyes:

Gander 07-23-2008 08:45 PM

I just read where Fabulous Strike is out of the Vanderbilt. Man, that changes the entire complexion of the race. Bustin Stones will be even more overbet than before, but he at the very least be the controlling speed.

Giant Gizmo is out of the Whitney along with Divine Park, leaving Commentator, AP Arrow and Rising Moon. Its so bad that Pat kelly is probably going to enter Tasteyville!

The Diana looks by far the best race of the day, but who knows what the turf will be like. Suppose to rain all day tomorrow again. They will run this race but it may be a bog. Great field though! Rutherienne, Bit of Whimsy, Vacare, Forever Together, Wait a While, Criminologist and Lady Digby. Top to bottom this may be the deepest grade 1 run at Saratoga in 15 years.

XIIPointStables 07-24-2008 09:09 AM

What a crappy, crappy weather day. Even driving back this morning, it was 90 minutes south and east before it even STARTED to break. Awful.

Gander 07-24-2008 09:20 AM

The only thing worse than the weather is today's card. Even on a dry day this would be a good day to avoid. So glad I took today & tomorrow off from work to go to the track  Thinking an $8.75 movie is sounding like a more enjoyable bargain at the moment! That along with a nap where I will dream of Saturday's AP Arrow and Rising Moon matchup is what today is all about. Good luck to those who persevere through the weather and the scratches.

Yesterday was a diseaster but what do you expect for trying to beat both short priced Dutrow horses in the 7th and 8th races?

the_fat_man 07-24-2008 09:34 AM

Dirt race is UGLY (taken any number of way). Dirt racing on an off track is EVEN UGLIER. Plato would certainly be in agreement that TURF racing is BEAUTIFUL. Those according SUPERIORITY to DIRT, over turf and poly, should be especially enjoying their SAR experience. Racing for the hardcore DIRT lovers.
