Cheapest claimer to win a Grade 1 race
Just wondering if a horse claimed for less then $10k has ever won a Grade 1 race? If so, what is the cheapest claim to get the job done?

anyone remember a horse named "Lord of the Game"? ( 2004? )
He was in a 10k maiden race, won by over 20 lengths was, claimed ( maybe Tomillo ) and at least ran in, or maybe won some graded races. |

Anyone know the closest OTB to Hilton Head Island? |
C&P from an old article online:
Xtra Heat was first sold as a weanling by Pope McLean, agent for $9,100 at the 1998 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, where she was purchased by Hartley/De Renzo. Summerfield, agent, was listed as the consignor when Scott Loring, agent bid $4,700 for her at the 1999 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. August yearling sale. She next sold for $5,000 at the 2000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May horses of racing age sale at Timonium. Consigned by Winterberry Farm, agent, she was purchased by her current trainer, John Salzman. Salzman, who did not have her x-rayed because of a shipping timing conflict, was unaware that the filly had spots in the bones of both hind legs that had not filled. "We got her for $5,000," Salzman told the Baltimore Sun. "I figured let's take a chance. She was a good-looking filly that we got cheap. We were just buying horses." Even Salzman offered Xtra Heat for sale by placing her in a $25,000 claiming race on June 30, 2000 at Laurel Park. She won by a neck, earned $8,550, and has raced exclusively in the stakes ranks since. |

Steve, Hilton Head is in Beaufort County. Jasper County is close by as well, but unsure if there are OTB's in either counties. |
Just gonna stay on the island I guess. Best find was a 'spirit store' selling 18 paks for $16. Beats the hell out of $6 dollar beers at the pool.

Oh and thanks Kev and no car so we're all good lol

Another interesting HHI tidbit. Eddie Maple and his wife run the Equestrian Center at Rose Hill Plantation, just off HHI. I wanted to stop by on my last visit to HHI but unfortunately ran out of time.

Though he didn't win a grade 1, he came close 2nd in the BC Sprint. Bluesthestandard was a 10K claimer many times.

This is a fun topic to google- so far I found an article about Cetewayo, who ran in a $13,000 claimer, and went on to win a G1 at age 8!
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/hor...ory?id=1341466 And this article from 1993, about Jerkins, says in 1973, he took two cheap claimers and won G1s with both of them, but it didn't say who they were: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...pagewanted=all |
