The "new" puppy meets the "old timer" Kasi....tonight!
 

This ought to be interesting, my stepson who is currently staying with us (a whole another story) until he gets his new apartment will be getting a 10 wk. old black lab puppy who will be keeping company with our 14 yr.old beagle mix; Kasi. She's always been territorial and I'm concerned a bit. Kasi did get along with our cat Jasmine until she past away two years ago, but they grew up together. It will be for only about another month, but how the puppy and the oldtimer get along will be something to see. Anyone got any advise that will be helpful would be appreicated.

Get a crate for the puppy ASAP, crate training is the best way to go anyway.

Make sure you do the intro's and tell her to be nice. But make sure the puppy can't bother her constantly, thus the crate for the puppy and let her have an area to go just to get away.

Beware of toys, chewies and feeding time.

Let her reprimand the puppy but keep an eye on it and don't leave them alone.

And dont just bring the puppy in the house.... maybe take them both for a walk at first and have them meet outside in a neutral location instead of in the beagal's territory...

Yes very good point and put both the puppy and the beagle on a leash so you can control the interaction.

We have the same thing but different breeds. We have a golden retriever and a coockapoo. They are great together. Now, the golden is the oldie but she is very mild mannered, never aggressive, they play all the time. Treat them the same and it will be fine, show the same affection and everything. Feed the older one first.

They are very smart, if one gets away with something, the other will try.

Well, the puppy is here and Kasi isn't too pleased :mad: the little pup just wants to be friends and the oldtimer doesn't want any part of it. For now, "Mossy" the pup will stay in his crate upstairs and Kasi will be downstairs. Fortunately, I work just 5 minutes away from home, so I'll come home noon hour to put the pup outside her crate for a bit and let her go outside to bathroom. Josh will be moving in his new apt. in July and then it will be his problem :D

I'm prepared for whining & crying the next few nights from Mossy in her new surroundings....hope Josh is prepared! ;)

my advice would have been for junior to wait to get a dog til he was in his own digs...but too late for that.

Puppies are a handful. I have been home alone all week (wife and kids at the in-laws) and am obviously not giving our 7mo old puppy enough of a workout. Her energy has built throughout the week and this morning was the topper.

We keep her in the kitchen, behind a baby gate, at night (and when she is home alone). This morning at precisely 3:40am, I woke up to her pheasant toy being pushed in my face....surprise! I went downstairs to check the baby gate and apparently she jumped over it because it was still standing and closed. She has been a terror all morning, climbing on me as I try to type this.

Normally with my family home, she barely lifts her head while I get ready for work. Thankfully it is friday and I'll be able to devote more time to her until the rest of the family returns Sunday.

IF you can make it, try mid-morning, noon, mid-afternoon. you'll have less mess to clean up. Mossy will do it's best Not to go in the crate but probably not be able to help it's self.

I'm dying to know if Kasi ate the puppy.

Pick the little puppy up and give him kissy-poo's....and say..."Oh puppy!! I love you! You are so much cutier than Kasi. Kasi is getting old hat around here. You are sssssso PRETTY!! YES YOU ARE!!"






And then put the puppy in the bathroom with Kasi.

My mom just informed me she put down my dog that I had growing up since I was 8 today.....

Even though I knew this was coming... It is still really hard. She was 17 or 18 so it was a long life.

RIP Candy girl.

OK I think I've built up the courage to drive home now.. I thought I was going to be better prepared when she passed but I guess ya never know til it hits you. My mom said all three vets recommended euthanasia. I wish I could have said goodbye though.

Thats that repercussions of living 1000 miles from home. :(

our dog Kasi is 14 and in pretty good shape, but no spring chicken. It will be real rough for me when she's gone.
