Collmus or Stauffer GP 2009 (Poll)
As you can see. This is my first post on all sites. This is not though my first exposure to horse racing discussion boards. In fact far from it. I've been reading and enjoying this and a few other sites for quite some time. I've just never felt the need to post my opinion until now.
So here it goes. I think Vic Stauffer should be reinstated as the announcer at Gulfstream Park. I've certainly read enough to know that many of you are sick and tired of announcer threads. But this is different. This subject is very impotant to me as a racing fan. I am serious about sending the outcome of this poll to Gulfstream and M E C. Let me first say that I think Larry is a good announcer who does a credible job. But I believe that Vic is much better. His calls gave so much love and passion to the horses and horsemen during his years at Gulfstfream. I miss that very much. Just in the past few weeks his calls have been featured twice on ESPN, The Jim Rome Show and the documnetary The First Saturday in May. Just the other night when I heard one of his calls from Hollywood Park on Sports Center I thought to myself how the heck did Gulfstream ever let him go? So here's the question. If the announcer's job for the 2009 GP meeting was open and up for grabs, and Larry and Vic were the only two candidates---Who would you choose and why? I know Vic has alot of friends and supporters on these boards. I'm sure they'll chime in for their man. Therefore the more people that respond the better chance for the most accurate representation of what the majority of racing fans would like to see done. Everyone with an opinion please respond. Remember for this poll only please choose Larry or Vic. Thanks Ace Rothstein Disclaimer: I contacted Vic and asked his thoughts about me trying to get him back to Gulfstream. He said that I was free to write whatever I choose and do whatever I wanted but that he would not participate. |
I liked the Zetterberg call last night, predictable but still funny.
|
Vic in a landslide.
Collmus' calls make me want to take naps. I vote VJS |
what up Unc...
|
Vic
Either way, it'll be nice to actually get the GP feed again, since Comcast added HRTV in Chicago. |
Is this the same Ace Rothstein from the movie Casino? It was on last night. Great film!!

My vote goes to Vic. I have nothing against Larry. I believe he's a capable and accurate announcer. I just think Vic is at a higher level right now. I thoroughly enjoy his calls, and in fact, started a thread about this at the start of the Hollywood Fall meeting. I ended that thread with "what was Gulfstream's management thinking letting you go".
|
I don't think it's any contest. I think Vic is a great announcer. I think Collmus is dead-average.

In a SHHaaakErrr
Vic. No contest. Anyone who can continue a call & crack a joke in the middle of a race call during an eartquake,:zz: to me is the announcing equivalent to the Preakness stumble of AFLEET ALEX, overcoming anything to get the job done.

Here you go. LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD

Neither, both of them are way beyond calling the crappy races that they constantly run down there now. I am going to use a write in vote: Denman.
|
I'd like to write in Aaron Hesz.
|
You'd think with the following Vic apparently has around here we're soon to have a poll regarding whether he should replace Durkin at Saratoga.
NT |
Ah. No!
|
Nice...the biased title of the thread is a great start.

Collmus does a fine job, I don't understand why there would be a need for a switch.
|
Will you clowns relax, it was made in a joking manner.
|
I don't really see a joke, just calling Larry a bad announcer while cyber blowing Vic.
|
It was in jest towards the other thread.
And if we are airing personal opinions, Collmus is garbage anyways, if I want someone to stay the same tone, I'll go to the library |
Pete Grunder!!!!

I don't understand why we needed two threads about something nobody seems to care about anyway.

Give Chris Kotulak another chance......he can get it right; I know he can. I've heard him call the races at Fonner Park. :D

If I recall, Vic was given the pink slip through e-mail. Seems like this thread is a waste of time.

The most important question to be asked here is who cares? Why now on a question that has obviously been answered by the people who have the final opinion- the ones who do the hiring and firing?
Obviously the management at Gulfstream saw a reason to make a change, they dismissed an announcer who is colorful yet is quite prone to error, often lets his emotions get the best of him, and has more gaps in his calls than Michael Strahan does in his teeth. They hired an announcer who rarely, if ever, makes a mistake, has more experience than his predecessor and gives you as factual a race call as you'll find anywhere. There's also something to be said for maintaining an even keel during a race call and keeping it simple. Vic seems like a nice guy and I'm glad he participates in the board. However, lines like "cowabunga dude" and "Showing the Speed of Ruffian, the class of Lady's Secret and the Heart of Personal Ensign" along with "that's the original rags to riches" is just a little over the top in my opinion. Brokeback Kotulak.

just try to imagine all of the memorable big race calls Collmus has made.
there aren't any because when he calls a race it sounds unimportant, bland. 10K claimers or gr1's, no difference. no doubt in my mind that they took a step backwards when they made the change. |
Arnold Horshack.

Clearly Vic is the better of the two, and he vehemently defended Gulfstream during the abortion that it has become and got fired nonetheless.
