cornball

MISTERGEE 05-08-2008 06:42 PM

some slight glimmers of truth, but he mostly comes off as a guy who went to the track himself maybe a handful of times and then decided to make some judgements that make me think hes an ass---. besides I personally do not do my gambling while drunk, Ive got enough of a challenge handicapping

Kasept 05-08-2008 06:45 PM

Hadn't seen this one.. Thx for posting it Curt.

Yet another ill-informed opinion. Dan Wetzel should stick to fantasy baseball and his similar high brow contributions to sports journalism. It is remarkable how much ignorant commentary this episode has produced... And not just from outside the pale of racing.

blackthroatedwind 05-08-2008 06:47 PM

What name does he use on Derby Trail?

blackthroatedwind 05-08-2008 06:51 PM

Thanks.....I thought it was Steve Haskin.

fpsoxfan 05-08-2008 06:53 PM

Wow. Just got home and have to read this. What a weasal. Yeah, when I'm at the Spa, I can't wait to have another can of beer when a horse goes down. This guy obviously has no clue.

ninetoone 05-08-2008 06:58 PM

Guy seems like a real dick.

Riot 05-08-2008 07:04 PM

Something had to fill the vacuum of commentary from the leaders of the horseracing industry.

Where do we vote for Racing Czar? Is that one of Dinny's Committees?

i suppose i should write this gent a thank you, since he's made me realize i'm actually a lesbian-as i had NO IDEA that i went to the track for the women in sundresses....a real eye-opener for sure.

Exercise is a missing ingredient for Dan Wetzel.

he hasn't gotten anything to worry about...it just always cracks me up when people use a stereotype to try to make a point. apparently it's only dirty old men watching racing and making a bet while getting sauced.

ateamstupid 05-08-2008 07:49 PM

Step 1. Write misinformed anti-racing screed.
Step 2. ???
Step 3. Profit.

The crap that passes for journalism is amazing. Stereotypes, generalizations, misleading or false statistics. Lazy garbage being spewed at almost every turn.
I never knew I was such a disgusting person that drugs his horses, runs them when they are too young and then get hammered and checks out babes when I go to the races. I thought I had problems before...........

Hickory Hill Hoff 05-08-2008 07:59 PM

Another guy who knows nothing about the sport.....guess he had nothing else to write about this week

Home slice already has that covered... likely to be followed by "worst belmont ever" and "worst saratoga ever" blogs...

As for Wetzel, stick to picking losers in fantasy golf, or getting '62 out of 65' right in your college basketball bracket predictions!!!

In his honor, I'll bet $100 on the prettiest lucky number horse, slam a beer, crush the can over my head, and yell to some chicks to "show your t*ts" at Pimlico. Douchebag.

If it isn't, we can always funnel some beers and holler at some girls, according to Wetzel.

Can we do that regardless?

For you? Of course.
I'll dust off my double-can Genny hard-hat while we're at it.

Oddly enough, I found this part of the article to be right on:

To call the horses a secondary attraction for many fans is to vastly overstate their importance. It may be cruel and impolite to say but, for many fans, the horses are only slightly more valued than a bumper in NASCAR and only moderately more than a keno ball or an ace of clubs.

The horses are nothing but the means by which all the drunken gambling is made both legal and socially acceptable.

I'd have not added the "drunken" part but I think the rest is correct. Maybe not when talking about people who are really fans of the sport, like most of us on these message boards. But go spend a day at the track, listen to the people talk about which horses they bet. It seems like 90% of the time, they have no idea what the horse's name is or anything about him. The horse is just a number. A means to make money.
