It looks like some big name jocks are going to miss out on the Preakness.

blackthroatedwind 05-06-2008 10:44 AM

It feels like after having beaten up all the kids at the High School, Big Brown is now trudging over to the Elementary School to dust them up as well.

Unless, of course, Harlem Rocker runs.

Alan07 05-06-2008 10:46 AM

Anything can happen, and I will NOT be betting Big Brown

With this kind of attitude, and HR running, we might just have another   moment in the Preakness.

i tried that in the derby and got my head busted for it.:o

Harlem Rocker needs to run.

ArlJim78 05-06-2008 11:11 AM

if Harlem Rocker does not run, anybody want to guess the win odds for BB?
i'm guessing 1 to 5 maximum.

now that I see El Gato Malo in the field, I'll say 2-5.

You figure El Gato Malo is more likely than the others to roll in front of him?

Somewhere between 1-5 and 2-5. Probably like .30-1 or so.

well, on second thought, remembering how Colonel John faired in the derby, not really.

blackthroatedwind 05-06-2008 11:25 AM

Honestly, if Harlem Rocker doesn't run, this race is an absurd mismatch. I seriously can't remember as soft a bunch facing a Derby winner. Slew had a potential rival in Cormorant, Pleasant Colony had to deal with Bold Ego's speed, hell Golden Act ( second to Spectacular Bid ) was a monster relative to these. Barbaro had the potential talent of Sweetnorthernsaint ( forgetting about Bernardini ) and even Brother Derek....all of whom would be odds on against this bunch.

I guess if you line up numbers 21 through 30 of this year's KY Derby probables you don't rate to get a very swift bunch.

Payson Dave 05-06-2008 11:37 AM

Dutrow certainly toned down his rhetoric....he seems inordinately concerned with running BB back off 2 weeks rest...he (or perhaps Michelle) knows the horse better than anyone...I'd love to know how his feet are doing and whether the Churchill surface created any new/other issues.

CSC 05-06-2008 11:37 AM

Add me to the list of people who thinks highly of Harlem Rocker, according to Jennifer Morrison's blog Pletcher is rethinking the Plate Trial for the Preakness. It would add some much needed interest to otherwise a dull race as it stands at the moment.

HARLEM ROCKER is now rumoured to be more likely for the Preakness than the PLATE TRIAL.
Trainer Todd Pletcher had hinted to WOODBINE ENTERTAINMENT that the colt would come for the Plate Trial and then the Plate but with a 106 Beyer Figure last time and an undefeated record - he might match up well with BIG BROWN.

justindew 05-06-2008 11:43 AM

I remember the last time Kent rode the Derby winner in the Preakness and faced a fresh horse owned by Stronach.

philcski 05-06-2008 11:46 AM

I think Ichabad Crane will also be running, Steve- at least that's what I've read.

Well, if Big Truck ( another NY Bred ) was 28:1 in the Derby, Icabad should be even money.

Just remember, I touted him in the Albany first.

I like Big Truck... and I have NO idea who would have bet him at 28-1 in the Derby. Seriously.

It's the Giacomo factor. Casual fans saw 50-1 in the morning line, and decided they were betting on him before they got to the track.

Also, the name is funny. Like with Imawidlandcrazyguy last year.

me too. but i never bet a 2-1 in the derby, i'd rather lose, i've caught some good ones over the years . i definetly would not bet something at 1-9 ever , unless it was in an exacta . the preakness may be non bet and just watch deal. i think big browns only problem will be the belmont. the rigors of the triple crown have been known to take their toll and this horse does not race alot .

Very true. The average person loves to bet on the longest price they see, so that they can regale their racing friends until the day they die with stories of them betting on "the longshot" (as if there's only one) and it winning. God, I hate those people.

El Gato Malo now heading to the Lone Star Park Derby

Just saw that....West Point changes their mind every 5 minutes...Last night it was The Preakness....Guess they didn't want a second or third place check.

They had a better shot at a board hit in Baltimore than in the Lone Star Derby. El Gato Malo could easily end up with no check in Texas. There's maybe 5 ahead of him there that have all gone by since the winter...

I bet the Big Truck-Big Brown exacta was about $50 bucks both ways.:D

Seriously, on FLA derby day at the track I over heard 2 guys discussing that BB and BT had to be related... And they were dead serious. I didn't know if I wanted to thank them for coming to the track or slap them.

I'm guessing both wasn't an option?

VOL JACK 05-06-2008 01:27 PM

I just sit in AHH with my mouth open for a minute until my friend asked was I alright.

Sure, I can buy that argument for a point or two, maybe even four or five. But seriously, HALF of what he legitimately should have been? The Derby win pool is something like $60-70 million, which means there was about a MILLION DOLLARS bet on a "name" if that's the case.

hockey2315 05-06-2008 01:41 PM

It was because of the Big Truck/Big Brown confusion. . .

freddymo 05-06-2008 01:41 PM

This looks like a 2 other then and Big Brown.. DrugS I could use Pryo in Super's in this field..lol

That does make sense. I wonder if they figured it out before the race was over.

Did I tell you about the time I had Vision and Verse over Lemon Drop Kid but I just bet Sarava flat in the Belmont. Oh and Volponi in the BC Classic. I was so proud of myself then everyone at my table shows me their bets. Half of them hit the trifecta

and... :D

Danzig 05-06-2008 06:29 PM

recapture still possible, but may go to the ohio derby instead. macho again also going to one or the other...riley tuckers name also in the mix for the preakness.

Dunbar 05-07-2008 12:12 PM

DRF now reporting that Recapturetheglory WILL go to the Preakness:

"Trainer Louie Roussel said Wednesday that Recapturetheglory will be sent to the May 17 Preakness after spending several days of debating whether or not to go. Recapturetheglory, fifth in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, will be the only Derby horse other than winner Big Brown to run in the Preakness at Pimlico."

He's definitely got a shot. Quite the nice little field materializing.

hockey2315 05-07-2008 05:05 PM

RR disappointed me last race. . . I'm thinking Kentucky Bear for the third slot if the big two go. . .

slotdirt 05-07-2008 05:37 PM

The field will definitely be more full than anticipated. You know, all things considered, Recapturetheglory really ran a nice little race the other day.
