Earthquake!!!

Wow!

It lasted for what seemed an eternity. No news on the wire just yet.

Hope it wasn't the New Madrid because it could've done some damage along the Mississippi River.

5.2 quake.

7 to 10 percent chance of an 8.0 or greater in the next 50 years. :(

Mortimer 04-18-2008 08:02 AM

I think it was just Mommy Dearest falling down.

GBBob 04-18-2008 08:06 AM

Southern Illinois is on the biggest fault line in the world actually. I have always wanted to go through some natural disasters, I slept right through it today. Word was that if a 7.5 quake rattled SIU, it would have destroyed all the buildings.

I hope Crown2Club is ok, he lives in Evansville, which was the epicenter I guess. Skippy to is somewhere in that area I think.

Coach Pants 04-18-2008 10:16 AM

Just had a tremor.

I'm 30 miles east of Evansville.

I am just a huge fan. I really want to do some toronado chasing down near Oklahoma and Kansas, like that show on Discovery, HUGE FAN.

In Carbondale, there was a real serious storm coming through, so inside of going inside, got into 'the Scav' and tore ass to get to the middle of a field and see if I could see a tornado, no luck

Mortimer 04-18-2008 10:24 AM

Thebby ain't here.

I'm leaving.

What's got me a little uneasy is this one was from the Wabash Valley fault and it could mess with the New Madrid. From what I've read about the earthquakes of 1811 and 1812, which happened in the span of 7 weeks, we be f.ucked if we get anything close to those.

So it wasn't from the New Madrid, that is interesting.

From what I read about it, if the New Madrid goes, it will be a large one, no small ones are coming from that area, according to the earthquake people.

SIU must be rockin and rolling already.

It might sound bad, but I think I am on the same page as Scav.

But I think it's all an after-the-fact wish. For me, it was. Given that it happened anyway, and given that it didn't (as far as I know, to this point) turn out deadly, I'm mad I slept through it because I'd like to have experienced it.

Though I also know that there's a huge chance that the Midwest gets a big, devastating one sometime in the not too distant future, so I'm hardly wishing for that one.

I guess it's sort of like redboarding an earthquake.

Move to Cleveland.

Enjoy many things unavailable to you where you now exist.

In the span of 6 hours two catastrophic earthquakes hit. That is unreal.

December 16, 1811, 0815 UTC (2:15 a.m.); 7.7 magnitude; epicenter in northeast Arkansas; Mercalli XI. It caused only slight damage to man-made structures, mainly because of the sparse population in the epicentral area. However, landslides and geological changes occurred along the Mississippi River, and large localized waves were caused by fissures opening and closing below the Earth's surface.
December 16, 1811, 1415 UTC (8:15 a.m.); 7.0 magnitude; epicenter in northeast Arkansas; Mercalli X-XI. This shock followed the first earthquake by six hours.
January 23, 1812, 1500 UTC (9 a.m.); 7.6 magnitude; epicenter in the Missouri Bootheel. The meizoseismal area was characterized by general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks.
February 7, 1812 (the New Madrid Earthquake), 0945 UTC (4:45 a.m.); 7.9 magnitude; epicenter near New Madrid, Missouri. New Madrid was destroyed. At St. Louis, Missouri, many houses were damaged severely, and their chimneys were thrown down. The meizoseismal area was characterized by general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks.

Scav 04-18-2008 10:33 AM

The crazy thing is that in grammar school (right down the street from where I live) we had earthquake training like once every two months, had to get under a wood desk, like that was stopping anything from hurting us....

The bad thing about it is that probably 90% of the buildings near this fault are not quake compliant, if their is a compliance.

Again, stay safe, I am surprised your internet and things are working Coach

GBBob 04-18-2008 10:42 AM

From a pure irony standpoint, it would be crazy if the midwest got hit with a monster earthquake before LA falls into the ocean

seeing one is one thing but wish or hoping for one is another.

First their is a killer cougar in the middle of Chicago, and now a 5.2 Earthquake, world is ending.....

One day I will purposely put myself in harms way down south in Oklahoma/Kansas for a week or two to chase tornados.

there are people that actually pay for guides to take them. You have to sign a waiver says you are nuts and they are not liable though...
