* * * Hong Kong trackwork Wednesday 23 Apr 2008 Hong Kong Jockey Club Audemars Piguet QEII Cup, Champions Mile 2008 – Tracknotes, Wed 23 April A grey drizzle covered Sha Tin on Wednesday morning in sharp contrast to the heat of Tuesday, as the international challengers went about their preparations for Sunday's two feature races, the HK$14m Audemars Piguet QEII Cup and HK$8m Champions Mile. Sakae Kunieda, one of the leading trainers based at Miho Training Centre in Japan watched his two horses, Matsurida Gogh and Meiner Segal work on the turf and was very happy with what he saw. Meiner Segal, bound for Champions Mile, set the pace under his regular exercise rider Takeshi Okumura, with jockey Masayoshi Ebina on board Cup runner Matsurida Gogh chasing from the 1000m marker. They both showed good acceleration in the stretch and Matsurida Gogh crossed the line just ahead of his stablemate with Turf Timers clocking the final 400m in 21.8 seconds. "They both were doing great and a perfect job. I now have a good feeling for Sunday's races." "This is my third time in Hong Kong and my horses are in good form and have settled in well. They will just walk around the stable area tomorrow to recuperate after today's work." Jockey Ebina who had just arrived in Hong Kong and was to return to Japan on Wednesday afternoon for next Saturday's meeting, was able to report on Matsurida Gogh after the workout. "I think he did a good job today. When I was breezing at Niigata Racecourse I was on board Meiner Segal, and watched Matsurida Gogh running next to us, and I was happy with his performance at that time. He also galloped powerfully today as well," Ebina said. "I hope he can keep his good condition for the rest of the week and the key point is how he can manage his new surroundings without losing weight. But I think he has enough talent to cope." Archipenko had a quiet day after his impressive workout on Tuesday, visiting the paddock at Sha Tin with Kevin Shea for a gentle paddock school. "I was chuffed with his work yesterday, his time was okay considering he was working on his own. I didn't want to do too much with him. He's eaten up well and he's very relaxed this morning, he's just taking everything in," Mike de Kock's assistant trainer Trevor Brown said. The French challengers for the Cup, Balius and Musical Way, continued their established routines on the all weather track, putting in regulation canters ahead of Sunday's race. Stephan Duprey, assistant trainer to Carlos Laffon Parias, was pleased with Balius, who was unstoppable in Listed Race company in France, winning five times. "He raced a few weeks ago and worked on grass the day he left France so we don't need to be doing too much more with him now. He's been a bit fresh - no surprise considering he has recently made his first journey on a plane - but anyway that is a good sign. We would be worried if he was not fresh," said Duprey. German raider Quijano was also kept to the all-weather, after which he went for a school in the paddock. Meanwhile the Kiwi galloper Sir Slick continues to please in his preparation for Sunday's feature according to trainer Graeme Nicholson. "I know I keep saying this but I just can't believe how well he's doing. Again last night he ate up everything in front of him. It's just as if he's at home," Nicholson said. John Size, on course for a fifth trainers' title in seven Hong Kong seasons, fields his first international runners for over 16 months in the Champions Mile and there's no doubt that Armada, runner-up in the 2006 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile, is the pick of his duo. Last season's Champion Miler in Hong Kong, Armada faces his third run after a year's layoff and by winning the Chairman's Trophy on 6 April indicated that a return to his very best form is imminent. "His win last time did not surprise me as he had done everything perfectly in the two months leading up. On his first run back [the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup] he got held up in the final part of the race but that probably worked in his favour in the final part of the race," Size remarked. "He looked very good in the paddock that day and he ran accordingly. He probably got a little tired in the end but he had a good blow and hopefully he can improve marginally and run well again." How much Armada can improve from his last start win in the Chairman’s Trophy is open to conjecture “but if he can repeat his last start or find a length or two I would be happy with that,” Size said, not underestimating the value of fresh legs when several of his rivals enter the final stretch of the season with a few more miles on the clock. Speaking of his likely chief rival, Size added: “I wouldn’t be confident that we can beat a horse like Good Ba Ba who is flying but I’ll enjoy the challenge for sure. I also think there will be further improvement in Armada after this race because this will be only his third run after a 12-month break.” In the same race Size also relies on Dao Dao “hoping he can run a strong mile” on the back of a career best performance last start when he carried top weight over 1400m. “I couldn’t say a mile is his best distance after a run like that at 1400m. He has progressed very quickly this season and I think there will be more in him for the future - perhaps after the summer when he has had a break. We will see him at his best as a five-year-old and hopefully in the international races in December. But he seems okay after his last run. I have been riding him myself and he seems fresh and well for this race," the trainer added. At the time of writing, weather forecast is cloudy with scattered showers. In the event of a wet track, trainer Andreas Schutz queried how his likely race favourite Good Ba Ba would handle the changed conditions. "All his wins have been on good or fast ground and that could make a difference but I'm hoping he can handle it if the ground changes," he said. Schutz agreed with the consensus "on paper" that the Champions Mile appears between Good Ba Ba and Armada but also wouldn't rule out Joyful Winner either "because he was perhaps a bit unlucky not to beat Armada last time as he was boxed in at the top of the straight." |

2 very important handicapping notes for Sunday morning:
Floral Pegasus drew the outside 10 draw, while Viva Pataca drew 11 of 12. 2 horses that had big chances Sunday didn't have much luck in the post position draw. Not that they are without chance, but I would go shopping for alternatives if they are overbet. |

Photo: Kenneth Chan Champion trainer Caspar Fownes experienced the low side of big-time racing yesterday when he found his Audermars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup contender Jackpot Delight to be lame in the right front leg. He was formally scratched from the race later in the morning. Fownes had been enthusiastic about Jackpot Delight's chances in tomorrow's $14 million feature and the horse was being warmed up prior to his final gallop when he noticed the gelding take a lame step. "I immediately went to inspect him and there it was, he was sore in his right front fetlock joint," a dejected Fownes said. "Last week, he had a soreness in one front foot but that was on the left leg and this time it's the right one. "I rang the owner Peter Law [Kin-sang] straight away and he handled the bad news very well. He just said to me `do the right thing by the horse' and that's what I always intended to do. "Peter is a very experienced owner now, he's had horses competing at the top level before and he understands these things can happen." While Fownes was disappointed to lose his Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby runner-up for the season, he says the longer term prognosis is good. "It's nothing really, just a knock or a small sprain and he'll make a complete recovery, I'm sure," the trainer said. "The main thing is we caught it early, before he went out to gallop. If he'd galloped or raced with an early-stage fetlock problem, then he could have done some serious damage. "He's done a terrific job for us so far and even though we miss out on a run in the QEII, his placings in the Derby and the Chairman's Trophy have served to push him up the ratings and basically qualify him for the international races in December," Fownes said. "I think he's going to be a better horse in six months' anyway. He's got this far in one long preparation, and he's going to be all the better for a good break now." In other QEII news, Olivier Doleuze partnered his mount, Balius, in a turf gallop, running the quickest 400m split of the morning at 22.4 seconds under the supervision of trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias, who had just arrived from Paris. "This is the first time I've sat on this horse and I like him," Doleuze said. "He gave me a good feel over the last 400 metres and he was not blowing at all afterwards, so he is very fit." Balius will be equipped with a new set of blinkers. John Moore, back from a frenetic week at the William Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, was happy with what he saw when he inspected his four feature-race runners, but was particularly taken with the way last year's Champions Mile upset winner, Able One, has started to bloom. "I'm not sure if he will be able to lead and make all like he did last year because he might have Joy And Fun for company," Moore said. "But if he is allowed to dictate terms, well, history has a habit of repeating itself. He worked well this morning and pulled up very nicely." |

Apparently it is a win your in deal with Good Ba Ba as the headliner. At the 1500 Metres, BULLISH LUCK was steadied to avoid the heels of ABLE ONE which was carried in by FLORAL PEGASUS which shifted in when not properly clear. F Coetzee (FLORAL PEGASUS) pleaded guilty to two charges of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The particulars of the first charge were that near the 1500 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of ABLE ONE, causing that horse to be carried in which in turn caused DAO DADO to be carried in across the rightful running of GREEN BIRDIE which as a result clipped the heels of DAO DAO and blundered. The particulars of the second charge were that near the 1300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of ABLE ONE, DAO DAO and JOY AND FUN, causing those horses to be crowded for room and unnecessarily hampered. As the Stewards are aware the Club had made an application to stage a racemeeting on Wednesday 14 May 2008, they decided in the circumstances of these cases that the appropriate penalty was for F Coetzee licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 15 May 2008 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of these suspensions were deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday 4 May 2008. These suspensions are to be served concurrently. If approval is not given for the Club to stage a racemeeting on 14 May 2008, F Coetzee was advised the Stewards will make a further order. In addition, on each count, F Coetzee was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Therefore the total fine is one of $80,000. DAO DAO made the Home Turn awkwardly and was steadied away from the heels of MEINER SEGAL. For a considerable distance after straightening, JOY AND FUN, DAO DAO and GREEN BIRDIE were held up and unable to obtain clear running. In the Straight, GOOD BA BA hung in. GOOD BA BA and ARMADA were sent for sampling. Before being allowed to race again, JACKPOT DELIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, BALIUS was hampered and carried in by VIVA PATACA (D Beadman) which shifted ground. D Beadman will be told in similar circumstances he should exercise greater care. Making the Home Turn, SIR SLICK hung out. For some distance after the 200 Metres, MUSICAL WAY had difficulty obtaining clear running. At the 100 Metres, QUIJANO shifted out away from BALIUS which shifted out. F Coetzee (HELENE MASCOT) was not able to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said HELENE MASCOT was on the toe more today than it was prior to its last start. He said HELENE MASCOT travelled comfortably throughout the race albeit slightly further back than he had wished. He said HELENE MASCOT came under pressure prior to entering the Home Straight and was disappointing in the manner in which it finished the race off. HELENE MASCOT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, HELENE MASCOT was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings other than he noted the horse to be making an abnormal breathing noise. VIVA PATACA, ARCHIPENKO and BALIUS were sent for sampling. |
I ended up falling asleep my allegies...just before the big race. But managed a nice win with Size-Whyte duo in the 2nd. I went with Armada in the mile just to have a rooting interest but the brilliant Good Ba Ba was simply the class of the race. What a performance!

Didn't get to see Archipenko win (had to go to hospital :( ) but very surprised he was good enough to win.
Good Ba Ba was in a league of his own, wasn't even extended to win. Very impressive perrformance. Hee seems to be getting better and better. Hopefully we will see him in something like the QEII or the Sussex over here in the Summer..... anyone know if there is a chance of that happening? |
Good Ba Ba looked sensational last night.... it will be interesting to see if he does travel and show his high class form away from HK..
I was delighted with Archipenko but had nothing on him unfortunately.. He's had a fair few problems but is a quality horse. Im happy as well that he is keeping up the tremendous record of Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winners...Plus, I think we should have a wacky crazy predictions thread and I would have Archipenko down as the Breeders Cup Classic winner. He should at least give it a go.. |

Definitely the horse that stood out tonight was Good Ba Ba, I would love to see what this guy could do shipping out of HK. A model of consistency and he beat or perhaps toyed with a good field.

Yeah, we will know so much more about him and the state of HK racing if/when he ships to Europe or America. I'd love to see him at Ascot this summer against the best milers Europe has to offer.
He has improved since beating Creachadoir, but he will have needed to for him to compete against the best milers from around the world, as Creachadoir is hardly a world beater (well, in my opinion he isn't) |
