The Friend's Lake Two Year Olds Look Pretty Good
I have seen at least 4 different Friend's Lake Two Year Olds that look like they can run. I don't know if any of them are stars but they definitely look like runners. I wasn't a huge fan of Friend's Lake as a racehorse but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far from his offspring.
I finally saw a nice Pleasantly Perfect Two Year Old. There is a PP filly at Barrett's who looks like she can run. She is the first decent PP that I've seen. |

Check him out: http://www.obssales.com/febpreview/ Also, let me know what you think of hip 93 (an Indian Charlie colt purchased for West Point.) |

Speaking of 16 million horses has anyone heard how "he who must remain nameless" is taking to being a man on the prowl?? |
What do the Smarty Jones babies look like? Anyone seen any? Are'nt they due to start this year?
|
They haven't been setting the track on fire at the 2yo sales.
And speaking of scorched earth - William Tecumseh Sherman was far too kind to those who commited treason if you ask me. |

He obviously was impressive in his preview and has moved forward the last six months. |
How is it so hard to figure out why a Friends Lake is selling for $450k? He was a GI winner by a GI winner out of a GI winner. Doesn't seem entirely unlikely to me.

Last month - he gets entered in a 2yo sale. He flashes an impressive physique and works a furlong in 10 seconds flat ... showing excellent raw speed for a horse bred to get a distance of ground. He sells for 450K. Had the same horse worked his furlong in 11 flat and not moved well in the process - he'd have most likely been A.) scratched from the sale. or B.) sold or RNA'd for about half of what he sold for as a yearling. |
I don't disagree with you in the least. I'm just saying, in the grand scheme of things, is it really so unbelievable that a Friends Lake would sell for $450k? I would suggest it is not.
|
Zayat stables bought a Friends Lake yearling for $600K at Keeneland September last year.
The $140K yearling turned $450K 2yo buy that is talked about in this thread was only the 6th most expensive Friend's Lake yearling of 64 offered at public auction. I agree with Rupert that his first crop are showing significantly more speed than what would be expected from them during these sales drills. |

For a socalled breeding expert you seem to be off the mark on Friends Lakes breeding. He is by AP Indy, the premier sire in American racing. He is out of Antespend who won 3 grade 1's and over 1 million dollars on the track. She has produced 3 foals of running age, one is FL, a grade 1 winner and another is Seeking the Ante who is a Grade 2 winner. Antespends dam, Auspiciante, was also a multiple grade 1 winner and graded stakes producer. Friends Lake is the best looking stallion at Airdrie (IMO) is very well balanced and well made especially for a son of AP Indy. I would think that he has at least as good a chance as Proud Citizen or Harlans Holiday, both of which are Airdrie success stories with 1st crops as 3 year olds. |
I believe Friend's Lake was a homebred. How much do you think he would have sold for at public auction Chuck?
|
I don't know Cannon....
I'm pretty well aware of the positives about Friends Lake myself - and I still expected him to suck as a stallion. He was an awful race horse. I have no idea where the speed in these drills are coming from with his babies. |

He was no superstar but there is more than meets the eye concerning his handling. |

He has an unraced half brother by Storm Cat named Rainmaker - stands for $1,500 in Louisianna.
Rainmaker actually had a filly sell for $77K, the sales topper at a Texas yearling sale. The Cuvee's look pretty damn fast - but they certainly figured to be nothing if not fast. |
FWIW I liked a lot of the Friends Lake yearlings that I looked at last fall....but I wasn't a fan of the horse, so didn't give them much credit.
I don't follow 2YO sales much...but will be very interested in how hip 148 sells. He was a classy, smart, good-looking yearling, reminded me a lot of his brother. also have a mild interest in hip 97 just because her 2nd dam is by the sire of my horse:o |

It's bad enough the Friend's Lake's are working fast - but his blacksheep brother is even getting fast ones. |

I'm hoping you mean the Cotillion Stakes (which is now a $750K stake by the way) .... but Seeking The Ante never won that. |
I always thought the Cotillion was named after some famous old horse or broodmare.... turns out ....
"In the United States, Cotillion has become training that children and young adults attend to learn manners and proper social behavior in the context of formal dance. The participants dress up in formal attire and some cotillions emphasize the use of white gloves. Modern day Cotillion takes the form of classes and parties." Ah, I'm sure Freddy and I and a few others missed out on those. More importantly, they should rename that race The Coaliton. |
