Yeah- that was ugly. It's bad when you know the announcer's wrong and are just waiting for him to correct himself. Kind of like watching a really fat guy plow Chicken McNuggets into his mouth as you almost feel like you have to look away and wait for the correction to happen.

LMFAO... I was wondering what the hell he was talking about too.

onebadbeast 01-26-2008 05:00 PM

TheSpyder 01-26-2008 05:02 PM

Electrifying pulling a head

This guy at one time was the best. Not anymore!!
Now he's missed two $1,000,000 race calls. This one and Street Sense in the BC Juvenile.

Indian Charlie 01-26-2008 05:07 PM

while that was quite bad, i've heard far fewer tom durkin calls in my lifetime (by a factor of thousands) and I've easily heard him make more mistakes, big race or not.

at least trevor, to my knowledge, has never called a horse not even in the race.

Hickory Hill Hoff 01-26-2008 05:10 PM

Must got something to do with the Santa Anita track surface

Riot 01-26-2008 05:12 PM

It was far more painful watching the Frank's Energy Drink contestants try and talk.

Ogygian 01-26-2008 06:26 PM

I am not sure who is more painful to listen to...the announcer from Tampa Bay Downs or Denman...first he called "Now Victory", Victory Now the entire race...I am not sure he even called Go Between until the far turn...then down the stretch he must have spilled his drink on his program..Electrify is going the better of the two..errrrr GoBetween goes on...there has to be someone a tad better at their job then these 2?????
Actually just listened to it again...he called Go Between..."Electrify" on the first turn...called Celtic Dreams..Seminole Native turning for home...I mean come on...

SCUDSBROTHER 01-26-2008 06:53 PM

I DON'T HAVE A CLUE HOW HE MIXED THESE 2 UP.If one of the horses with green silks had won, then I could see him calling it Electrify, but the winner is all white silks. To me,the turqoise used for the 9 number is pretty much a stand-out(compared to all the colors of numbers.)I guess when horses are making moves that quickly, that's when mistakes calling races seem to happen.

Does any one know how long Trevor's contract is with the Breeder's Cup? I think his calls are just plain bad.

I wish the BC would consider some one else. Maybe Vic Staufer.

One of my big complaints with TD is that he NEVER gives the fractions of the race. This is information that people want to know. It does tell a lot about how the race is unfolding, does he not realize that?

If he gave them today, nobody would have believed him anyway!

my miss storm cat 01-26-2008 11:30 PM

We all make mistakes.

I'm surprised, but really... if we make a mistake in our work? It's not the end of the world. It's really easy to sit here and judge but i can't imagine calling race after race and not messing up occassionally.

(Oh I am NOT being sanctimonious..... I just like the guy.) :p

I think I'd rather hear Denman call the wrong horse down the stretch than hear that guy at Tampa scream from start to finish. How does that guy have a job?

The fractions are on the t.v. Why would you need him to say them?

onebadbeast 01-27-2008 05:32 PM

this oaklawn caller is no prize either!

pmayjr 01-27-2008 05:40 PM

The Tampa guy is Richard Gurndler. He actually filled in for Caterbury guy Paul Allen when Allen would miss time to call Vikings games on the radio. Grundler's "nasally" voice does get annoying, but it could be worse. Do we need to start talking about Battaglia now?

So are the horses...

Well we don't have what each horse looks like memorized most of the time, so it makes sense to call them. Only the first 4 horses are usually labeled on the t.v. screen.

But fractions are there on the top right. It's good enough for me.

Grunder should stick to his job as a jockey agent which he is at Canterbury.
By the way, you may want to proofread your posts more carefully.:D

Well, I work in the operating room, so if I make a mistake, it actually could be the end of the world for someone...

Hospitals and doctors are the leading cause of death in the USA!

I'm glad you people are getting it right!

Linny 01-28-2008 10:16 AM

Grunder's calls boggle the mind. He calls the first 3 out of the gate then tells you who is LAST. Nothing about the 6 or 7 in between! Mr Magoo could do better.
Generally I think Trevor is good but he always seems to go to stock phrases. When he misses, he's very bad.

I like Vic Stauffer, Larry Collmus and Dave Rodman.

I think there might be some logic to this. He seems to do it at the beginning of the race only. Instead of wasting time trying to sort through the whole field in the first two furlongs when they are kinda bunched up, he gives you a snapshot of the break which is to say the first three or four that are on the pace, and the horse who is trailing.
After that I believe he works through the whole field but later in the race they are more strung out and have settled into the racing postions more and the position calls are more important. Battaglia goes through the whole field once and they are already on the far turn.

Despite Grunder sounding a lot like the announcer for the Bullwinlkle show, I kinda like his distinctive calls.

I agree with that assessment. I think that this has a lot to do with the large number of 10-12 horse races Tampa has especially sprinting on the dirt. There may only be a length or two of separation from front to back. He does indeed call the entire field after they've gotten well away from the starting point and is often very informative in his calls.

Now, his voice....

Proofread? whtizpruufreed? Yeah you're right though... Beside Derek Bell, who can't seem to ride anywhere but Canterbury now, who else does Grunder represent?

At Canterbury, he was the agent for Martin Escobar as well as apprentices Preto Espindola and Jenna Joubert. Don't know about Tampa.
