DRF Handicapping Championship

Going on in Vegas this weekend. Anyone know anyone that made it?

Kasept 01-24-2008 07:08 AM

From Derby Trail, we have Paul ('pweizer') Weizer and Tony ('NC Tony') Montanino there... and of course wish them good luck... (And Brian Spencer is in the World Series at the Orleans starting today, so G/L to BWS!)

After them, other acquaintences that we'd like to see do well include the immortal Ted Mudge, affable Doug Bredar, Mel Moser.. Likely more that I don't even know are in..

I am in Vegas now and will be heading over to the Red Rock shortly. I will post updates here during the contest in case anyone wants to follow along.

Good luck.

Say hi to Mudge. He's one of the world's greatest people.

Best of luck, guys!

Best of luck Paul, may your longshots be winners.

I tried to get in, and failed. Anyone that has a spot has certainly earned it!

pweizer 01-24-2008 04:44 PM

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. I am now at the Red Rock. It is possibly the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen. Other than being far from civilization, it is simply beautiful. A far cry from Bally's who has hosted the contest for the last five years.

I drew the short straw in the seating lottery. The race book is too small for the contest so they set up tables around and behind the regular seating. Those in the regular book get individual televisions, lights, and outlest for laptops. Those of us at a table get a chair and that's about it.

I am listening to the show and doing homework now. More later.

Paul

Good luck, Paul. Go get 'em !

TJ Taylor from KY and bill downes from Ohio are both going.

MaTH716 01-25-2008 07:59 PM

Good Luck guys, Do the DT Nation proud!

pweizer 01-25-2008 10:51 PM

I finished day one in 117th place (out of 277) with $60. I am about $25 out of 25th and $40 out of 10th so this is still possible. A few missed opportunities are quite frustrating but overall I am pleased with how day one went considering the limited tracks.

A big day tomorrow and anything is possible. Thanks again to all for the good wishes.

Paul

DAY 1 STANDINGS: http://www.drf.com/nhc/2007/2007_nhc_day1.pdf

Paul Weizer sitting decently at 117th with $60.00.. NC Tony 155th with $45.20...

Leader at $150.00, but stalking the pace and the guy to fear is Steve Wolfson Sr., a former NHC champ and son of the late Louis Wolfson, at 4th ($136.80).

Defending champ Stanley Bavlish was shut out on the day.. $0.00.

If you are looking to play along today, the mandatory races are:

TAM 3
AQU 4
TAM 7
OP 5
OP 7
FG 9
GP 10
GG 8

pp's are here: http://www.drf.com/nhc/2007/nhc.html

Bigsmc 01-26-2008 08:55 AM

Trying to find some tournament value:

TAM 3: 6 - Just Add Rum 5-1
AQU 4: 1 - Proud Yankee 8-1
TAM 7: 8 - Classy Kelly 8-1
OP 5: 5 - Nakayama Kim 6-1
OP 7: 8 - True Wink 8-1
FG 9: Assume it will be off the turf with many scratches....
GP 10: 9 - Ruff and Ready 8-1
GG 8: 4 - Thundering Justice 6-1

pweizer 01-26-2008 09:14 AM

Thanks, Mike. I am considering many of the same horses so it is nice to see I am not too far out there. I am not at all pleased with the selection of the mandatory races, especially the turf race at the FG which has zero shot of staying on. Seven other sunshine millions races could have been chosen and would have been better races to play.

Good luck Paul. It only takes a couple....

Win some of that daily money and you'll find yourself up near the top overall too.

pmacdaddy 01-26-2008 10:10 AM

Good luck! Interesting set of races...

AQU R4 I'm looking at Miller's Mint cutting off sloppy route try (12-1 ML.). Maybe just wishful thinking on my part... Proud Yankee is also interesting adding blinks for Dutrow.

Have a profitable day fellas!

dellinger63 01-26-2008 10:41 AM

Couple of potential longys at AQU IMO

AQU Race 1 #3 20-1 ML

Race 4 #10 15-1

Race 7 #3 15-1

Good Luck All.....Lots of races to come back......

pweizer 01-26-2008 05:54 PM

I didn't do much today and ended up with about $80. Rich Goodall has a big lead late. The rest are playing for second at this point.

I finished 147th (tied with former champ Stephen Wolfson). Let me again thank everyone who sent good wishes and advice. It is great to be a part of this community.

Good job Paul. It was fun following this. Maybe next time.

Are you heading down here to see KnS Tuesday or is that stretching too thin?

I can't make this race. I have been away from work for a week already but will certainly come see her in her next Tampa start.
