Other years, other Derby lists.....

I love reading the early top 10, 20, whatever lists.

I've decided to stay away from those for now... probably cause of my stellar early picks in the past.

Who were some of yours..... you know, who were you reeeeeally wrong about?

I'll start. I had futures on such illustrious runners as Itsallaboutthechase:eek: , Really Indian, and Flashy Bull (hey, at least he went on to win something). :D

The Wood..... flashbacks of looking for Pavo and Deputy Glitters. Camera didn't pan that far back either time, I'm sorry to say.

Last year it was all about Great Hunter and, closer to the Derby, Zanjero.

Aaaah well.

Who wants to go next?

miraja2 01-14-2008 10:07 PM

Last year I was a big fan of both Great Hunter and Notional a few months out.
My most ridiculous recent prediction would have to be in 2004 when I was convinced the week before the race that Friends Lake was going to run a big one.
I am still ashamed of that one.

saarland. he ended my infatuation with late closer's. it turns out the jock sends the horse close to the finish line regardless if it's a 6f or 12f race. so passing all those tired horses late but not winning keeps happening even as the distance increases.

read the footnotes. one good race in january apparently doesn't make you a great overlay in the derby.

IrishofNDMan 01-14-2008 10:09 PM

When I first got into horse racing a few years back it was Friends Lake, thein I liked High Fly, and most recently it was Sharp Humor and Scat Daddy. Not that good of luck for me.

I am still ashamed of that one.

I liked Friends Lake, but it was the first Derby I actually bet on and the first day I bet horse racing as it was my 18th Birthday, so I have an excuse.

SniperSB23 01-14-2008 10:11 PM

Derby picks of the past.....oh, well...here goes nothing;

Spend a Buck '85 - long time between winners with this one
Badgerland '86 - one of many Lukas also-rans
Bet Twice '87 - runner-up twice...went off him in Belmont!
Forty Niner '88 - always liked this one
Easy Goer '89 - if only he had another pilot other than "patient" Pat
Summer Squall '90 - one race too early
Hansel '91 - see above
Technology '92 - original choice was AP Indy, but we know what happen
Union City '93 - another Lukas runner...brokedown in Preakness
Brocco '94 - got sucked in that California form
Talkin' Man '95 - got sucked into his Gotham victory
Unbridled's Song '96 - what could have been with better connections & no sore foot
Pulpit '97 - didn't want anything to do with the Derby distance
Halory Hunter '98 - liked him even more going into the Preakness, but never made it
General Challenge '99 - entrymate with Excellent Meeting (the filly) two for the price of one.....NOT!
Fusaichi Pegasus '00 - the streak is finally broken, went down in flames next start
Point Given '01 - SHOULD have been a Triple Crown winner!
Saarland '02 - by default that year...wasn't hot about anybody
Ten Most Wanted '03 - on the band wagon too soon
Read the Footnotes '04 - ??????????????
Afleet Alex '05 - got caught on the "dead" inside, game little bugger!
Barbaro '06 - R.I.P.
Street Sense '07 - w/ Hard Spun, my FIRST "cold" exacta

blackthroatedwind 01-14-2008 10:27 PM

Badgerland was 100 the best in the 1986 Derby ( and, no, I didn't bet him ).

King Glorious 01-14-2008 10:28 PM

I know I really liked Circular Quay last year. I liked Bandini a few years ago. I was on Point Determined and Cause to Believe a couple of years back. I was all over Smarty Jones and Lion Heart as my exacta in 2004.

NoChanceToDance 01-15-2008 07:50 AM

Scat Daddy was mine. I thought he was excellent value last year, and I thought he was good thing to hit the board.

Sightseek 01-15-2008 09:38 AM

Bellamy Road was the biggest heartbreaker...although I'm still naming my first child after him.

blackthroatedwind 01-15-2008 10:12 AM

Pretty impossible to remember, but....

1976 Honest Pleasure
1977 Seattle Slew
1978 Affirmed
1979 Spectacluar Bid
1980 Probably Plugged Nickle and definitely not Genuine Risk
1981 No idea but not Pleasant Colony
1982 Don't even remember the race....I was probably on the Dead Tour
1983 See above
1984 see above
1985 Proud Truth
1986 No idea but definitely not Ferdinand
1987 Alysheba-Bet Twice
1988 Forty Niner
1989 Easy Goer
1990 No idea but not Unbridled
1991 Hansel
1992 Anyone but Arazi
1993 Someone that hasn't finished yet
1994 Go For Gin - Strodes Creek ( if I never win another Derby I will remain profitable because of this year )
1995 I hated Thunder Gulch but have no idea who I liked

1998 Definitely not even close
1999 Menifee
2000 FuPeg

2002 Medaglia D'Oro
2003 Maybe Empire Maker but probably someone that finished 12th
2004 Tapit ( and definitely not Smarty Jones )

2006 I used Barbaro but wasn't a big fan....whoever I liked was probably 16th
2007 Any Given Saturday - Street Sense

The Bid 01-15-2008 10:17 AM

What are you naming your first child? Bellamy - Bell or Amy?

You could name them after Bellamy creatively and name it Dud-ly

blackthroatedwind 01-15-2008 10:18 AM

Smarty Jones was the lightning bolt that randomly hits....the year that every idiot was right.

I'm not saying that you had to be an idiot to like him, though the two are far from mutually exclusive, but that he was the horse that every idiot liked. Fortunately, they are right occasionally as well.

Tapit, in my mind, will always be the most overrated horse in internet forum history.

He was an embarrassingly bad selection....on my part and anyone's. I must have been overcompensating psychologically for the depression I would have suffered had Michael Dickinson won the Derby.

philcski 01-15-2008 10:36 AM

My actual picks (at least the ones I remember)... Derby has been good to me for sure

'88 Private Terms
'89 Sunday Silence
'90 Pleasant Tap
'91 ?? no idea
'92 Pine Bluff
'93 ?? no idea but definitely not Sea Hero
'94 Holy Bull
'95 Thunder Gulch funny story: I had been betting at the same OTB down the block from my house for probably 3 years and they never asked for my ID until I tried to cash this ticket, had maybe $25 on his nose. I was 17 at the time, so my dad had to cash it for me. Before that he'd just send me down with our money and bets and they never said a thing.
'96 ?? I think Editors Note
'97 Silver Charm
'98 Victory Gallop
'99 Steven Got Even (did he finish yet?)
'00 ?? I think my top 3 all finished last
'01 Congaree
'02 Saarland (I liked Buddha till he scratched)
'03 Peace Rules
'04 Smarty Jones
'05 Afleet Alex
'06 Barbaro
'07 Street Sense

blackthroatedwind 01-15-2008 10:41 AM

Phil.....if you liked Editor's Note you cashed as he was an entry with the winner I believe.

You reminded me....I liked Pine Bluff the year he lost as well.

booner 01-15-2008 10:58 AM

Check these out (this is embarassing as hell).........

2004 - Tapit and Imperialism
2005 - Sun King
2006 - Lawyer Ron
2007 - Great Hunter

This year, I'm just gonna pick a horse with a name I like. It surely can't get much worse..........:D

brianwspencer 01-15-2008 11:04 AM

I was a HUGE Wilko supporter in the Derby. He didn't run a bad one, but he didn't run a big one either.

And I was very high on Notional last year before he was taken off the trail.

You are correct, he was... but I think it was one of those phases where I was all about exotic bets and I know for sure I didn't have Cavonnier because some jamoke convinced me a gelding couldn't win the Derby (and I was stupid enough to listen)... so I'm sure I didn't cash a ticket. Regardless, I didn't have Grindstone anywhere in my top 5 for sure.

PPerfectfan 01-15-2008 01:10 PM

I really like Afleet Alex but I loved, loved Closing Arguement. I just loved the fact that he hit the board in all of his races and was dead game. While it wasnt on this board, on the other board that I was posting on at the time, I made them sick of hearing his name. :D And freaking Giamaco, cost me the tri AND super. I didnt have him in the 1st spot, only 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I did make money because I had C.A. across the board, and my bestfriend, who was a first time bettor, became a horse racing fan for life as C.A. was racing to the finish line. But boy, the tri and super would have been, in TVG speak, "A Life Changing Payoff". Did I mention freaking Giamaco......hehe But I was happy for Mike Smith.

Obviously, in retrospect, I was probably wrong and got lucky. But, Go for Gin had been way against the track in his two previous races.

If anyone was going to beat Holy Bull that day I figured it would be Brocco.. I was pretty surprised when Go For Gin came out on top...
