Watching it here - too bad it counts as a real game.

MaTH716 01-01-2008 12:27 PM

What did they expect having an outdoor game in Buffalo, New year's Day? Sunny and 45. It's a God Damn Blizzard. You are right Bill, too bad it counts. But it does look pretty cool!

ddthetide 01-01-2008 01:09 PM

looked neat on tv but i wouldn't want to be there live.

fpsoxfan 01-01-2008 01:22 PM

The segment they just did on the movie Slapshot was cool.

BillW 01-01-2008 01:35 PM

With all of the ice problems, it's going to end up as as answer to a trivia question about the longest game in history.

BTW the Hansons (Actually 2 Carlsons and a Hanson) are still yucking it up ...

Very Interesting Article!!

I know absolutely nothing about hockey but it is pretty awesome, plus I like the Penguins jerseys alot.

Quick dumb question, is there a checking rule or can you just cream people whenever you want?

I am guessing you have to square them up and you can't smoke them in the back or anything....

You can't be SERIOUS?? They don't play hockey in Chicago?

they do but I never watched it or learned it. I know how to skate in hockey skates also.

I was always baseball/football/basketball

Scav 01-01-2008 02:27 PM

what is also hilarious is that I was unbeatable in NHL 94 for Super Nintendo

I can play hockey, I just can't skate.

You can only check someone who has the puck, or very recently had it. You cannot check someone from behind into the boards. However, these rules are policed and interpreted by semi-blind dimwits, also called referees (there are two on the ice during the game).

You can check the guy with the puck only, otherwise it's interference. No checking from directly behind into the boards. The unis are really old "throwbacks" from the 70's. Now they're black and gold. I think Pittsburgh is still the only city with all pro teams using same colors.

That is a great trivia question right there.

I know the hockey teams and cities and all that good stuff, I just don't know the rules

Like Scavs grew up around hockey but never got into it, however, this is a great game to watch.

Penguins jersey? Uggh... THIS is a hockey logo...

golfer 01-01-2008 03:17 PM

As a huge hockey fan for more years than I care to admit, this game to me is torturous to watch. Hockey is a fast paced game of speed and skill, not what you're watching now, with stoppages every 2 minutes to fix the ice.

Yes, conditions kill everything the NHL wants to highlight - speed and skill. BTW same here as a fan, NHL Center Ice subscriber for last 6 or 7 years. :D

This statement might ring as true, only because you've never faced my boy Brady. 94 was my off year. If you would have caught me in 93 or 95, dunzo.

O and about the game today. Pretty cool, awesome ending.

MaTH716 01-01-2008 04:06 PM

Just like in the movie Swingers, we all used to meet at my friends house drink and play before we went out. Yes, I am not too ashamed to say that sometimes we never made it out of the house. Only thing we had it for the Sega Genisis.

MaTH716 01-01-2008 04:45 PM

Our litmas test was if you could win the cup with the Quebec Nordiques. Proudly, I can say that I did. Jesus, we were such a bunch of Losers!

You couldn't score off of him.

I watched today's game in snippets because of college football. It's fun to watch, and hockey is a great game!

I can't remember the guys name but i used to left-right-left any goalie consistently. Selanne maybe, that might be too new for 94.

I loved the one timers on there also, so much fun to play. I might have to go on EBay now and get it

aren't many rules at all. hockey is an easy sport to learn, more penalties really than rules to worry about.
full of action, and one of the few sports that's better seen live than on t.v.

sorry i missed this one, i heard greenie talking it up this morning. maybe they'll do it again soon.

Back page of the Sun Times this morning was promoting the Hawks doing this at Soldier Field. Best PR hockey has had since Gretzky

Best game in the world

It's a great day for Hockey!

They did this in college hockey at Lambeau Field in WI a few years back. The Badgers played Ohio State. It was a ton of fun, however being at the game was more of a novelty than anything. Of course tailgaiting and tons of extra curricular activities were good, but a football field is not made well for the viewing of a hockey rink. With that being said, I would probably go again. I have a soft spot for hockey outdoors, since that is my main winter activity.
