Your vote for Person of the Year.....

Anyone wanna make a nomination?

Mine goes to Ron Geary, owner of Ellis Park, for stepping in and scratching, buying, and retiring 17-year-old warrior Alpena Magic and giving him a new job..... the first Equine Ambassador of Ellis Park.

There was a lot of controvery surrounding this old guy but Mr. Geary single-handedly gave the story a happy ending.

For his act of kindness, his compassion, he gets my vote.

Hickory Hill Hoff 12-22-2007 10:23 AM

That's easy!

Mr. Steven Byk.....hands down!

NoChanceToDance 12-22-2007 10:25 AM

What about Morty? :D

I agree that was admirable, but Geary would get my vote simply for trying the 4% takeout Pick-4!

Yeah because the lawsuit has nothing to do with the decision.

I was thinking about Allam / Premium Tap and your nomination is along the same lines.....

Isn't that just a sad reflection though, that if there really were a POY Award it should be given just because a horse is kept in training?

Not knocking you here... just thinking out loud.

If he's not? if Curlin is not in training next year (... and i only say that because I've grown accostomed to the I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it syndrome), who gets it? Who deserves it?

saratogabrit 12-22-2007 12:58 PM

The staff, vounteers and Committee of the Belmont Child Care Association and those who do the same for B.E.S.T.

whodey17 12-22-2007 01:03 PM

I would have to say Nick Zito. First of all he is a very great man, very loyal, loving, trustworthy and he even managed to win some races this year.

NoChanceToDance 12-22-2007 01:04 PM

This feels a little like finding the MVP for the Knicks.

I remember many years back when the Orioles let Eddie Murray walk, one of the reporters asking someone in management how they could let the team MVP go. The response: "We came in last with him, we sure as hell can come in last without him."

That's actually an old line and I think it was used with Ralph Kiner by somebody like Casey Stengal.

That will be the person who fires Isiah Thomas.

It would be hard to argue with Ron Geary as the choice, but I'd have to go with Richard Shapiro. He stopped the ADW exclusivity on California racing. I can only hope that others with the power to do so will follow his lead.

Dean Richardson is a good choice. Other possibilities include:

Carl Nafzger
Harvey Pack
Cornelio Velazquez
Jeannine Edwards
Richard Migliore
Charles Hayward

Terry Meyocks? Really? What exactly do you know about Terry and why is he on this list?

Huge Gaffe on my part. I meant to write Charles Hayward. WOW. Thanks!

jballscalls 12-23-2007 05:15 PM

My vote would go to someone who sort of transcended the sport into the mainstream somewhat and that is Calvin Borel.

I think that is a good point. To see him smiling after his wins, and then to have the formal dinner at the White House really did alot for the game to shine in the spotlight of mainstream sports. He is a great vote...

TheSpyder 12-24-2007 04:55 AM

My vote

If you want someone who transends the sport my vote would be for the Queen. Having her show up at the Kentucky Derby was an excellent showcase for the sport and puts the finger on why horse racing in England is so so different. It's part of the culture of everyday life, dignified by all, and truely the Sport of Kings.

We need this desperately here. Not sure how, but if we could bring in people or publisize people who would give more honor and credibility to the sport, it would go along way for the future of the sport.
