http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_7606500

i only posted because i have a large bumper sticker on the back of my hummer supporting the troops.

i'm doing my part.

i'm glad we have this patriot pointing out the failures of other's.

AeWingnut 12-01-2007 06:17 PM

from this day forward let it be known that the Pittsburgh Steelers shall now and forever be known as the Shitsburgh Stealers

Mortimer 12-01-2007 06:21 PM

If you really like outrage...think what would have happened if they had played the US National Anthem and then cancelled the game.

Why?

Danzig 12-03-2007 07:08 AM

'decision made by league officials'.

not just steeler officials, altho rooney was in on the decision. the league has since said it was a mistake, and they won't make the same decision again.

i don't understand what the big deal is. or why pittsburgh is getting finger pointing.

not just steeler officials, altho rooney was in on the decision.

That just could be why.

Ya..no big fucl<in' deal.....I mean do we have to ALWAYS sing this thing in honor of all those worthless 18 year olds that have died in wars ?

I mean .....it's getting a little old.

Fer gosh sakes......there was a long delay....there weren't many people around....so why bother?

Riot 12-03-2007 11:37 AM

I suppose this is just me, but it bothers me a bit when just anybody lowers the American flag to half-staff (for example, when a local town council member dies).

I mean, I know it's meant to honor the death of somebody locally, as a show of repect, but I was brought up that only the President or a state Governor could order the American flag lowered, and only for certain people - it's a sign of national distress.

Is this a silly overreaction?

Halfmast for the glorious flag should be for worthwhile contributions.

Lower it for every guy dying overseas now.

Nascar1966 12-03-2007 01:14 PM

Has the thought come to anyone's mind that maybe the Steelers didn't have the option of having the National Anthem played? Wasn't the game already delayed for about 20 minutes already? Perhaps the NFL told the Steelers the National Anthem won't be played. Its hard to put all the blame on the Steelers when we don't know the NFL's view about it. The sound system would still have to of been setup up.

Aw Lt...I don't want to fight today. It's too muddy out there.

Fucl< the as sholes.

Just be real and don't play the National Anthem at NFL games. It's phony so why try and act like they mean it?

Mortimer 12-03-2007 02:13 PM

Hey Lt....I can't fight anymore. I took a round in the shoulder and it hurts.

Oh....Jones has a leg blown off?

Oh..well ok. I'll fight with this.....but it just don't seem fair.

Mortimer 12-03-2007 02:27 PM

Here....the National Anthem has been embarrassed by too many people using it as a stepping stone for their own success. Let's just not play the thing anymore. If we don't mean it...let's not do it.

Not playing it certainly won't stop a game from going on...so what would be the big deal?

Just drop it all together and no one will ever have to have the pressure of deciding to drop it because of foul weather, inconvenient network delays , a lack of enough people watching brave men fight a war...I mean play a game ...or any other logical reason.

Good...I'm glad.

I was really going to get angry.

By the way...I've always made good sense.

It may have been veiled 'neath the last lilac blooming....but it was there.

Danzig 12-03-2007 06:13 PM

i just think some of the comments posted below that article were over the top.
apparently life as we know it as americans is soon to end, as the national anthem wasn't played at one game of 16 one time during the nfl 17 week regular season. the sky is falling. no doubt thousands converted to communism due to the decision.

i have to admit tho, i find it distasteful how many talk while the anthem is being played.

---------------

Well there's another reason.

Nobody wants it...so fucl< it......get rid of it.

Fucl< the National Anthem and fucl< the flag and fucl< everyone who died while in the Armed Forces.

Fucl< those guys......why should we be bothered with their memory by showing such laborous appreciation?

Ya...fucl< it....life goes on.

Mortimer 12-03-2007 06:39 PM

In fact....let's get rid of the flag completely...and all of the patriotic song bullsh it. No one wants them.........fucl<...the sky ain't gonna fall and communism nor naziism nor terrorism won't fall into our laps. Right?

Fucl< all that noise.

Fucl< those suckers that die in wars, too.

Who the fucl< needs 'em.

Mortimer 12-03-2007 06:42 PM

Hey!!

Just don't you take my mothah fucl<in' football away from me!!!!!!

That will make me really angry!

Baseball ,too!

Danzig 12-03-2007 06:44 PM

nothing like a little hysteria to brighten everyone's day.

Rileyoriley 12-03-2007 07:01 PM

At my daughter's high school this year, the new principal decided they would only play the National Anthem 1 morning each week instead of every morning like they had been. The students protested (many have siblings, parents, or friends in the military). The kids won. I'm proud of my daughter and the other kids.:)

Why are you so worried about this Mortimer?? Don't you know there are big things going on such as LeBron's sprained left index finger?? Shouldn't flags be lowered to half mast due to that??

Danzig 12-03-2007 08:05 PM

i just don't think the decision made by a few in one game indicates a huge problem. i'd rather worry about the state of vet hospitals. no doubt soldiers would rather have adequate care when they need it then sweat whether a national anthem was skipped.
i'll ask my son in a couple of weeks when he comes home for the holidays.

Frankly ,HOC, I'm surprised he's not on the flag himself by now.

Shameful.

why? because i love my country? of course i do. but i refuse to get fired up over the anthem not being played at ONE football game, considering the circumstances surrounding the decision. it's become a routine. i don't think it should be routine, as it causes what i mentioned above. people don't pay attention to routine. they talk, they eat, the ignore it basically.

Trying to make 7246..it's important..don't make me fucl< it up.

Mortimer 12-03-2007 10:27 PM

Oh fucl<...might as well use it now.

What some people seem to miss is we play football because of the National Anthem...we don't have the National Anthem thanks to football.

Rather than draw things out I think some can see what I get at.

So let's continue to revere our sports heros and all of our other false idols we have built and forget how all this came about. The past is easy to sweep under and now we have an all volunteer Armed Forces so they know what they signed up for...fucl< them .

Fucl< the National Anthem ...it's one game...it's no big deal because no one cares about it anyway.

If everyone had to actually have fought in a war it might be different.

No wonder so many of those guys said they fought for each other...and no one else.

No one else really cares..do they?

Next time play the Anthem and fucl< the stupid game....cancel it like the whore it has become.

Fucl< you who don't agree.

Good for them!

Are kids still taught the Pledge of Allegiance?

Danzig 12-04-2007 06:31 AM

they do the pledge here every day, but we never had the anthem before school.

GenuineRisk 12-04-2007 08:09 AM

The anthem's music is originally the tune of an old English drinking song. So, when it's played without words, it is truly being patriotic, or is it a subversive ode to drinking, which frankly, is more in line with a sporting event, anyway?

"To Anacreon in Heaven, where he sat in full glee,
A few sons of harmony sent a petition,
That he their inspirer and patron should be.
When this answer arrived from that jolly old Grecian:
Voice, fiddle and flute no longer be mute,
I’ll lend you my name and inspire you to boot,
And besides I’ll instruct you like me to entwine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus’ vine."

http://www.colonialmusic.org/Resource/Anacreon.htm

I LOVE our history- anthem is set to a drinking song, and the Pledge was written by a Socialist- interesting tidbit-

"His (Francis Bellamy's) original Pledge read as follows: 'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' He considered placing the word, 'equality,' in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ * 'to' added in October, 1892. ]"
