Maryland Million

Nothing gets me more jazzed up for a solid day of racing at Laurel more than seeing every single person on the Metro this morning looking at the crossword puzzle, which coincidentally also included a half page ad on the Maryland Million itself.

I think it's the redneck in me, but I love the Maryland Million and the West Virginia Breeders Classic just as much as almost any other day in racing.

Danzig 10-11-2007 08:11 AM

are the conductors on metro any more understandable than in the old days?

i don't miss it at all.

slotdirt 10-11-2007 08:31 AM

Ah, they actually have electronic signs now in many cars telling you the next stop that is coming. TO be fair though, DC Metro conductors are WAY more understandable than the folks in New York.

phystech 10-11-2007 09:16 AM

I'm looking forward to going to MD Million Day also. It's always a fun day at the races and you can usually get a nice price or two somewhere along the line, if you are sharp enough to find them. I usually am not, so as long as the beer they serve stays cold, I still have a good time.......:)

slotdirt 10-11-2007 09:28 AM

Laurel never skimps on the sales on beer either. I've had more than my fair share of Woodford on the rocks, poured healthily, for $3 or less.

phystech 10-11-2007 09:44 AM

Woodford - at Laurel - for $3????

You gotta tell me where that deal is......:)

slotdirt 10-11-2007 09:51 AM

They have a couple of days towards the end of the meet where they're clearly trying to get rid of their booze, and every drink is like $2 or $3, including Woodford in regular sized Solo cups. Look it up on their website, I'm positive they have one in April right before PImlico opens and one sometime in November.

phystech 10-11-2007 10:20 AM

Thanks!!!

I've also heard that you can get a wider variety of beer on the tarmac outside the clubhouse at the end closest to the paddock. Rumor has it it's leftovers from events, parties, etc. I've seen the cart out there but never wandered away from the clubhouse bar long enough to test the waters..... I will on Saturday!!

I also heard recently that they've been having a raw bar on the weekends.

slotdirt 10-11-2007 10:23 AM

Yes, definitely a raw bar on weekends, though I don't know how much I trust oysters sold at Laurel. Anywho, they also have the Miller Lite girls on weekends on occasions. Schwing!

-BT- 10-11-2007 07:29 PM

when i look at the card i don't know if i want to laugh or cry?

horses who couldn't win 5K claimers at charles town going after 150K purses.... sounds like fun right?

either way im gonna head out there saturday, along with all the old caddy's and chrystlers .... ah laurel, md... what a town, roll'm up lock'm up. if anyone else is headed out there hit me up and we grab a beer

Riding the metro to and from work for enxtended period of time made me damn near suicidal, the people are depressing and if you don't get on at the first stop its d!ck to but for an hour and half while you stand.

Beyer had a pretty good article in the post, anyone catch it

No joke, BTW is going to be there?

slotdirt 10-12-2007 10:46 AM

Where is Ah Day for this thing? Figure he'd be a sure winner in one of these races. Good to see Play Bingo and Silmaril making appearances.

He must be injured, I would have thought he'd be pointing at the BC Dirt Mile otherwise.

phystech 10-12-2007 11:49 AM

Ok, here's a little tout -

Linda Albert has three horses on the card. One of those three will win or place and be part of a nice exacta.

I like her 2 year old filly that she owns and trains.

Linda won't run 'em where she doesn't think she's got a chance to win or get a big chunk. She's not one to run just because she can. Her horses are always well spotted and well meant.

-BT- 10-12-2007 07:13 PM

if people want to meet up, let me know.
I'm hopefully gonna get there kind of early

suggestions anyone?

Send me a private message as I'll probably be there on the early side tomorrow. I'm happy to meet up with DT-ers as to this point, the only one I've ever officially met is Kasept and I'd love to expand my knowledge base.

JS,

Play Bingo is a scratch... :(

slotdirt 10-13-2007 06:42 AM

Man, Kasept is seriously on top of things. Poor old Fogelsonger, that guy just can't buy a break these days.

ddthetide 10-13-2007 06:57 AM

looks like you guys will have a nice weather day. be safe, have fun and cash some tickets !

slotdirt 10-13-2007 08:36 AM

I look out my window here and it's sunny and warming. Can't wait to hit Laurel!

slotdirt 10-13-2007 09:55 AM

If anybody is going and feels like searching me out, I might have the brightest orange shirt on in history today and I'll be sitting in the boxes with a guy and his two kids, both under the age of three.

Am I the only one who thought the MD Million Turf race run in 1:46 was exceptional?

How it was done was phenomenal. Dueling the whole way through ridiculous fractions then pulling away in the stretch to tie the course record... I liked him a bit, 1st time turf with a bit of turf pedigree. My selection didn't run a lick (One Eyed Joker.)

Is it OK to blow your own horn on this forum???? :)

Those were two nice exactas with Ms. Albert's horses......

Until this past Feb, I've had horses with Linda for the prior 6+ years. She does such a nice job given what she has to work with. I walked away from MD racing in Feb because it just got to be too tough to be a claiming owner in the middle levels, and there's no money to be made at the bottom.

I hope days like yesterday will open owners eyes a little so they'll think twice and maybe give Linda a decent horse or two. I have no doubt she can train with the best of them.

Steve, if you ever want to start a partnership in MD, I'd recommend going to Linda Albert to train. Need a phone number, let me know....

slotdirt 10-14-2007 01:49 PM

On your advice, I used the two Linda Albert-Fogelsonger horses in my pick three wagering. Sadly, I missed out on horses like Evil Storm and Forty Crowns. All in all, a fun day, but not great wagering.

WTF is up with the heat at Laurel? Seriously, it could be 90 degrees outside or 30 and it's still like 89 with 75 percent humidity in the box seats area.

Forty Crowns looks like a potential monster.

ddthetide 10-14-2007 02:46 PM

i wish btw had told us he was goin to be on tv. i had no idea it was televised until i surfed between games and stumbled on the last 2 races.

slotdirt 10-14-2007 07:15 PM

Was HRTV there yesterday?

ddthetide 10-14-2007 07:54 PM

MASN carried it on cable. pincay was the host.

slotdirt 10-14-2007 09:46 PM

Any idea what Forty Crowns got for a Beyer? I have to imagine it was impressive.

Under a 105, because it's not on the updated Beyer leaderboard. My guess is a 102, giving Maddy's Heart (the winner of the Ladies) an 89.

Sorry. It was pretty well advertised and I assumed people knew.

slotdirt 10-15-2007 06:40 AM

Just to show you how far behind the times I am, I didn't even know BTW was actually on HRTV.

blackthroatedwind 10-15-2007 07:57 AM

I'm not on HRTV. The show was a MASN production that used Laffit Pincay from HRTV. Caton was also working for HRTV and was on our telecast.

slotdirt 10-15-2007 08:32 AM

AH! I get it now. I saw the film crew outside. I swear I've seen those tents sold for like $29.95 at Target.
