Biggest winning margin you've seen at the track

Today I saw a horse (and I thought it was a pretty average one too, only 1 win in 6 starts before today  ) called Waicou Wasp destroy a field by 14 lengths. Was obviously not a strong field, but still impressive to watch.

With a really massive win like that seeing the race on TV really doesn't do it justice, you have to be there to see how big the distance is between the winner and the rest of the field.

Just wondering what the biggest margin you guys have seen when you've been at the track is.

Slewbopper 09-05-2007 04:15 AM

In stake races, a bunch of Belmont winners....Risen Star (15), Bet Twice(14), Conquistador (14).

TheSpyder 09-05-2007 05:57 AM

"Here comes bunny" has an absoluetly massive lead and won by half the stretch, then stoped on the back side and all the dogs caught up to her. Then it happened again, and again, and....

miraja2 09-05-2007 06:07 AM

I was at the Wood Memorial in '05. I don't remember exactly how many lengths Bellamy Road won by that day, but off the top of my head, I think that was probably the biggest margin of victory I have seen in person.

santana 09-05-2007 07:23 AM

Big Red....Belmont Stakes....31 lengths;)

Was there myself, think it was 16 and it was VERY impressive.

PPerfectfan 09-05-2007 10:12 AM

Years ago we had a QH that was AAA at every distance on the track and he loved the 870yd races. He won a stake at Delta Downs by 10lengts. Not to bad for a QH race.

Yep, same here...Secretariat in the 73 Belmont! Risen Star's Belmont romp was impressive as well as he did it despite an abscessed hoof.

That is a colossal margin of victory for a Quarterhorse.

Congrats on that win!

Thanks and yes he was moving like a tremendous machine. He was special. He was Triple AAA, at every distance. Which in QH racing, AAA, is the highest speed index a horse can get. He won the 870 stake that day, and we found out that he had bred 2 mares that morning. A guy at the stud barn didnt bother to follow instructions that he not be bred 2 days before a race. Some ole cajun guy, walks up to us as they are loading in the gates and says that he and his buddy had their mare bred to him this morning. My mom and I looked at each other and said "Hes gotta be drunk".lol But we found out later that he was right (even though he was drunk, hehe). We were pissed but when you win like that,,,,it makes it alittle easier to swallow. :D

17 1/2. I was there too. Awesome.

Unbelievable timing of this topic. Labor Day at Ellis Park Sir Dorset wins a two and one fourth mile event by 40 1/2 lengths. Not quite the '73 Belmont, but interesting none the less.

witchdoctor 09-05-2007 02:53 PM

There was a paint race at FMT last year that the horse won a 350 yard race by 8 lengths. That was impressive.

KirisClown 09-05-2007 03:34 PM

Flanders winning the 94 Frizette by 21 lths...

Swap Fliparoo 09-05-2007 04:21 PM

Too Much Bling won as a 2yo (MSW at Thistle) by 19 1/2 lengths - going only 5.5f!

hoovesupsideyourhead 09-05-2007 04:44 PM

bernardini most any time he ran...under a hand ride..

robfla 09-05-2007 04:47 PM

Just the other day.....Costa Rising was given a 117 BSF for a 17 1/2-length romp in a $55,000 allowance race on the closing night card at his home track of Evangeline Downs.

yeah, didn't see it live, but had it on the other day in time to see that.

also saw bejarano get smashed between the rearing horse and the starting gate the other day--wonder how he's doing? horse is fine...

witchdoctor 09-05-2007 05:45 PM

Here is a link to one of the races to that Paint I was at FMT. This race at RP was a lot closer than the one I saw at FMT.

A statebred back in 1989 called; Bert...he won by 27 in his maiden breaker.

King Glorious 11-18-2007 09:39 AM

King Glorious won his 3yo debut by 21 at Golden Gate.

Strange that you say that right now.

I had no idea that that race had ever happened, until I saw Don Tiger entered at Hawthorne yesterday in a 1 9/16 turf race.

He was the horse who ran a game second, beaten just a smidge under 41 lengths that day as the favorite.

I couldn't get over how odd the running line looked -- having run second and showing a 40+ beaten lengths.

Port Conway Lane 11-18-2007 10:20 AM

Spectacular Bid at Delaware Park by 17 lengths setting a new track record with "the shoe" on his back for the first time.

blackthroatedwind 11-18-2007 10:22 AM

I think the official margin of victory for Summer Colony's maiden win at Saratoga was 32 3/4 lengths.

saratogabrit 11-18-2007 10:34 AM

Seen many horses win jumps races here by "A Distance" which is 30 lengths+

jballscalls 11-18-2007 11:52 AM

We had a first timer named Forest Jazzy this past summer at River Downs that won by 24 lengths in a 6f maiden special. They took her to Belmont and she's still a non 2 i believe.

booner 11-18-2007 11:53 AM

La Triaviata's debut was impressive. Her 13 1/4 length win seemed like 20 when I watched it (here come the Biancone comments/jokes :D ).

I remember watching Bellamy Road's '05 Wood Memorial. Actually got out of the house and went to Kentucky Downs with some friends. Everyone went nuts. Several of us were rooting for him, but didn't think he would run off like he did.

my miss storm cat 11-18-2007 01:11 PM

Okay well I've never actually seen him, but the old guys catch my attention.

Sometimes i check the Mountaineer entries just for the hell of it and one jumped out at me this morning.

Sir Dorset runs tonight, and look what I found.....

SIR DORSET (USA) b. G, 1995 DP = 10-7-11-4-0 (32) DI = 2.37 CD = 0.72 - 66 Starts, 14 Wins, 11 Places, 9 Shows Career Earnings: $228,768

Owner: Regina Murphy & Willis Simpson
Breeder: Pamela J. Bayliss
State Bred: FL
Winnings: 66 Starts: 14 - 11 - 9, $228,768

Recorded the largest victory margin ever at Ellis Park in 2007 by winning a 2 1/4-mile starter allowance by 43 1/4 lengths.

http://www.pedigreequery.com/sir+dorset

18-furlong wonder -- The 12-year-old gelding is getting old, but SIR DORSET (Vicksburg) can still put on a show. In 2003, he won a 2 1/4-mile starter allowance at Ellis Park by a staggering 43 1/4 lengths. He didn't race at the uncommon distance again until this Labor Day at Ellis, and was dismissed at nearly 9-2 against only three rivals. Bettors were likely turned off by his last three outings, three unplaced efforts versus similar company in one-mile and 1 1/8-mile races, but those distances are too short for Sir Dorset. Give him 18 furlongs. Sir Dorset strolled home 40 1/2 lengths on top.

Good luck to the old guy tonight.

You don't understand..... it started cause I follow the old guys (I didn't know where Mountaineer was... Duh! :D ) but now my reason for checking is two-fold...

I'm always wondering if horses i really liked who have been a bit disappointing (ie, Exceptional Ride - poor thing) will end up there.

Thanks for your kindness though and if i ever need a list of meetings I'll know who to ask. :p

edit - The good Sir won again tonight.....

JJP 11-18-2007 03:27 PM

Meadowlake's debut at Hawthorne in 1985. I believe it was 22 lengths for the margin. I think it was just after the fire at Arlington and the balance of the meet was run at Hawthorne.

Indian Charlie 11-18-2007 03:29 PM

giacamo's derby win

Thanks Andy...

I was reading through the thread saying what the heck was the name of that Evans filly? She won her next race by a pretty good margin too if I'm not mistaken.

Cash Run won her debut at Belmont Park by 15, I think. My recollection was that it was a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, so the few of us in attendance were treated to a monster effort.

Didn't Friendly Island win by about 15 in his debut the day after the Belmont Stakes? He was a Pletcher firster who was cold on the board -- by Pletcher firster standards -- at 4-1. It was a chilly day, too.

Think it was 18, but I could be wrong. I liked that horse a LOT, made some nice change on him throughout his career.

I was at the '05 Wood as well. Nothing against Bellamy Road, but that field was truly terrible...

I wouldn't have remembered it but I read an article the other day about Hennig training his thousanth winner ( something I consider akin to my beating Tyson in his prime ) and that was mentioned as a highlight.

There was no mention of his unbelievable lack of success with a multitude of well bred horses year after year.

Less with more, Hennig or Ward?

My vote goes to Ward (despite winning a KY Derby.)
