Night time after the Spa
Any recommendations for a 1st time visit to the Spa Travers weekend? Looking for some options or any "stay away!" referrals for drinks and or dinner after Friday & Saturday next week.
Have a racing junkie with me Friday. Any bar with cold beer and lots of racing talk/ loosing crying/ past glory stories would be great. Saturday looking for dinner with the wives after the big day. I will leave the dress code debate alone as I am flexible. Hoping to bump into DT people all weekend. thanks. |

For yourself and the wives, I really enjoy Forno Bistro:
http://fornobistro.com/ Grey Gelding is nice as well: http://www.greygelding.com/ |
I will check the links out. The wives will be happy if we cash a few tickets. With NY smoking laws they will also be getting less cigar smoke than usual with us. thanks!

They still have outdoor bands down on Caroline St. ?

Hit Siro's after the races, and then downtown. Go up and down Broadway, take a look at some of the hotspots -- you'll see 'em, LOL. Off Broadway, yes, The Parting Glass is a stop, City Tavern, Mare, 9 Maple, Gaffney's, and more. For dinner -- some of my favorites are Lanci's, Chez Sophie, Doc's Steakhouse, Grey Gelding, Springwater Bistro, and One Caroline.
Now, if you are looking to enjoy a cigar -- the only place you can smoke inside is the smoking lounge at The Wine Bar, or outside area at 9 Maple and Mare (I think you can still smoke outside at Mare -- not sure, so check first). Enjoy! Eric |

I like this place for drinks too. I've heard mixed thoughts on their food, but the filet was done perfectly for me. Good ambiance:

If you are over 30 then avoid the Parting Glass like the plague. If you want to impress your wives bring them to the cafe in the Adelphi Hotel on Broadway. Much more discriminating crowd.

I have been on a Seafood diet for many years any time I SEE FOOD I like to eat it:D Thats why every time I make a trip to Saratoga I make a trip To Sergio's if you like Italian food thats the place to go I promise you this you will not leave there hungry.
|
I never got past the Horseshoe and Double Vision!!!
|
I've been to the track five times this year and I'm usually hammered by the
8th race. I'd love to see the night life in Saratoga. After drinking beers, going back and forth from the paddock and the track plus hitting the pisser about 20 times a day, I'm too beat to hit the night life. I hit Leon's for a couple of Margaritas and call it a day. |

The same goes for Gaffney's at night. It's WAY too crowded. If you are looking for a nice bar to just chill and relax Parting Glass and Gafney's are not it. But I would still check out those places during the day if you aren't at the track. There are wonderfull. |
I'm 29 and the Parting Glass is my FAVORITE! Yes, crowded... but filled with racing memorabilia and definitely a beer lover's paradise. I can't find a lot of those beers elsewhere.

Check with Byk....he can recommend this wonderful place that charges $15 for a house salad and $13 for a side plate of brocolli.

Well to set the record straight.....
I was there. You really need to picture this. We pull up to what could pass for a French country house which is what it was, an incredible old house, white two story, out in the country, with portico, just smells of class and money. So we go in and fill the entry area of the place, and a number of us gradually looked at each other and our sweaty baseball caps, shorts and t-shirts, and subliminally consider the fact that we had not had any alchohol in like 30 minutes and we are probably certain to grab a wine list, after martini's for all 15 of us (my guess) and do serious damage. We looked at the blue blood crowd with many in coat and tie, white table clothes, candles, checked out the menu and did a little math, and said "this is a potential debacle". This was just a classic replay of the Blues Brothers who show up in the french place in Chicago, and get loaded and say "the little girl, how much for the women?"
To the credit of the nice folks who run the place, they were game, but after everyone agreed this was not the place to spread out the form for the next day, I was the one who offered our apologies for their efforts to seat us. Anyway, all was well, we found a wonderful place that was more than prepared for the DT groove. I/L :) |
yes and scavs was dressed like a bum....
