Thor’s Echo, Discreet Cat, Utopia regaining strength

Thor’s Echo, America’s 2006 champion sprinter who disappointed in two Dubai starts for Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al Maktoum, appears to be rounding back into form since reunited with former trainer Doug O’Neill in Southern California.

A five-year-old gelded son of Swiss Yodeler, Thor’s Echo breezed five furlongs on Monday over the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park in a speedy :59.40, the fastest workout of the day at the distance on the surface.

Thor’s Echo finished sixth in both the Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr.1) and the Mahab al Shimaal (Gr.3) at Nad Al Sheba in his only two starts of 2007 to date.

In 2006, he finished second in the Dubai Golden Shaheen before rebounding to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr.1) and the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes (Gr.1).

Meanwhile, Godolphin’s Discreet Cat, who galloped on Monday at Saratoga Race Course, is showing signs that he is getting closer to a racetrack return.

But assistant trainer Rick Mettee said that while he is pleased with the colt’s progress following a throat infection detected after his unplaced finish in the Dubai World Cup (Gr.1), the four-year-old son of Forestry is not likely to race during the Saratoga meet that extends through September 3.

“He’s doing really well. I’m really happy with him,” Mettee said. “He’s galloped the last four days over the track here; he really likes Saratoga. Right now, we’re looking forward to Belmont Park’s fall meet with him.”

The Dubai World Cup, won by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Invasor, marked the only defeat of Discreet Cat’s seven-race career.

Mettee also reported that Godolphin’s Utopia, winner of the 2006 Godolphin Mile (Gr.2) and the Westchester Handicap (Gr.3) in his only start so far in ’07, could be ready for some big races this fall after incurring leg and foot problems.

“He’s come to hand a little quicker than we thought he would and he’s been sharper than I expected. We’ve got options,” Mettee said, mentioning the US$500,000 Woodward Stakes (Gr.1) at nine furlongs on September 1 at Saratoga or the $150,000 Brooklyn Handicap (Gr.2) at nine furlongs on September 22 at Belmont.

A seven-year-old Japanese-bred son of Forty Niner, Utopia suffered a leg infection that kept him out of the prestigious Metropolitan Handicap (Gr.1) in May.

I was browsing the internet the other night and was looking through some of the movie rumor websites and noticed two lines about a docudrama on Godolphin. Supposedly Chris Burke, Corky from "Life Goes On," is already cast for the role of Sheikh Mo.

You heard wrong.

Discreet Cat will win the BC Sprint (by 4), Dirt Mile (by 12), and the Classic (by 7)

However, he plans on skipping out on the winners circle presentation for the Classic -- as he other business to attend to.

And by "business" I mean banging the lucky winners of the Juvenile Fillies, Distaff, and Filly & Mare Turf.....

Probably IN THE BUTT!

Discreet Cat clocked in three-furlong workout

Unraced since the Dubai World Cup (Gr.1), Godolphin’s Discreet Cat took to the Saratoga Race Course main track on Monday morning for his first official timed workout prior to an anticipated return to competition, breezing three furlongs in :37.39.

The easy exercise, the first of two timed workouts that assistant trainer Rick Mettee hopes to complete with the four-year-old son of Forestry before shipping him to Belmont Park, was ninth fastest of 13 moves at the distance on the dirt.

Mettee has said the six-furlong Vosburgh Stakes (Gr.1) at Belmont on September 30 is a possible goal for Discreet Cat. But he also cautioned that Godolphin might opt to send the colt into a Breeders’ Cup race without a preliminary race.

“He’d have to come around a lot between now and (the Vosburgh). He’s capable of doing that, as we found out last year. But he would certainly have to come on in the next 30 days quite a bit to justify going in against the sprinters that are going to be in there,” Mettee said during a media teleconference last week.

Mettee said it is “a definite possibility” that Discreet Cat could start in a Breeders’ Cup race without a prep. He indicated that trainer Saeed bin Suroor and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum have ruled out the 1 ¼-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr.1) in favor of either the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr.1) at six furlongs or the new Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

“We’d like to get a race in to him before that just to see where he is—just see how good he is again. He seems fine in his training and all, and he’s run well fresh, so, if he was just blowing us away in his morning works, I think Saeed and Sheikh Mohammed would probably be comfortable just going straight in the Breeders’ Cup,” he said. “But if we could get a prep into him, that would certainly be our preference.”

Undefeated before finishing unplaced in the Dubai World Cup, with his victories including the 2006 UAE Derby (Gr.2) and the Jerome Breeders’ Cup Handicap (Gr.2) at Belmont, Discreet Cat has never competed at Monmouth Park, host of this year’s Breeders’ Cup. The colt was diagnosed as suffering from a throat abscess immediately following his effort in the Dubai World Cup.

Will the ground be soft??????

I'm certain a Cadeaux Genereux out of a Sadler's Wells mare won't enjoy really firm conditions.

I will be amazed if he acts on firm ground.

His best form has been achieved on good to soft and heavy turf........ something, which you guys will never see over in the States.

Last time seen in a race, he was the dead one. He is odds on to not win another race of any consequence.
