Favorite race of all time.....

Not the greatest, not the biggest win you ever had, not the best field..... if you have one, what is your favorite race of all time?

I'm talking sentiment here and nothing more.....

A special memory.

Anyone?

1987 Belmont...

My father loved Alysheba, I loved Bet Twice...

Not the most exciting race, but I will remember it forever...

the match race between the black, sun raider and cyclone. no, just kidding....

probably the kentucky derby won by genuine risk. had only been watching racing a couple of years, and here was this beautiful filly taking on the boys. of course i had to pull for her--and she was my first derby winning pick. had rooted for alydar and then general assembly in the previous runnings...

That's the kinda thing i meant.

For me it was the 2004 Hollywood Derby. First time i ever went to the track or saw the horses up close and personal. :)

Good Reward, Hendrix, Fast and Furious, On the Acorn, Big Squeeze, Imperialism, Blackdoun, Whilly, Timo, Terroplane, Fightclub, Laura's Lucky Boy and Joursanvault.

I'll never forget it. I was hooked.

Oh that was hilarious all right Ryan.

I would think old Shecky Green clips put you right on the floor.

(But I will say DollarBill flying down the stretch for 4th place in the Preakness as well as Thistleydown runners OneFourDave and DJMarinesBoot winning at incredibly amazing points in time tie for my best.)

1998 Belmont Stakes...most likely the closest we'll get to see a horse attempt to be a Triple Crown winner for quite a while.

The 1982 LQHBA Futurity. My mother was the trainer of a stud that no one wanted. When she convinced the owner to buy him(his first horse ever) he had warts all over his face, 3 shoes on, and limping. The first time we took him to work at EVE, I went to borrow a shadow roll and the man told me he would let me borrow it but dont blame him if it out ran that ugly ass horse. He went on to win his first 3 outs, then win the trial, then the Futurity. She was the first woman to win the futurity at that time and no woman has won it since. She is also still the only trainer, man or woman to win the Futurity then come back the next year and win the Derby with the same horse. Sorry for being long winded but I am very proud of her.

miraja2 07-04-2007 10:46 PM

For me it is the one in my avatar........the 1989 Preakness. It was the greatest race I have ever seen AND it is my favorite.
I still watch that one a couple times a year.......and you should too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSaQPrMS0RQ

Unbridled overtaking Housebuster in the 7f Deputy Minister stakes at GP in 1991--that was the goddamnest race I've ever seen.

Indian Charlie 07-05-2007 01:51 AM

1985 strub. musta been 50k in attendance or more.

precisionist, greinton and the usual up to his antics gate dancer.

precisionist battled early with dont say halo, put him away, and then got hooked by greinton with a desperate battle all the way to the wire. gate dancer made his bid but got himself into trouble, having to pull up in the stretch before rerallying.

at least that's how i remember it!

that's the race that hooked me.

j/k

boswd 07-05-2007 08:13 AM

Mine would be the Birdstone Traver's. Not only did it give Nick Zito his first Traver's victory, but the whole totall darkness, with the huge lightning bolts in the background. And then the massive downpour right at the horse's hit the wire. It was just an absolutly insane race. Plus I watched it on HD that day and it was spectacular.

Buffymommy 07-05-2007 08:13 AM

So many, but this one made me cry. I loved this little horsie and always rooted for him and most of the time he came up short, but not in the BIG race. I was jumping around screaming "HE DID IT!"

Hey, you wanted sentimental.

Ooooh that was insane, I was at the finish line for that one. Still gives me goose bumps.

The Bid 07-05-2007 08:18 AM

Rob thanks for posting that made my day.

Stauffer even blew that call, amazing

Thank you, it was an experiance that i will never forget. I was a 12yr old girl in love with anything to do with racing and after we got back from the test barn we went into the cafe and as we walked in everyone in the place stood up and gave my mom a standing ovation. All of the trainers that said a woman didnt have a place on the backside, all of the others that thought we were crazy to belive in this crippled ugly horse, in that one act gave her the acceptance that she ever wanted.

Mine too.

I was sitting up in those old wooden seats at Gulfstream and was simply amazed at Unbridled blowing by Housebuster like he was standing still.

I have it on videotape somewhere, just haven't spent the time to dig it up. It deserves to be on Youtube.

How influential do you think that series was in establishing our current interest, Danzig?!

loved those books growing up, and have a few of them--working on getting all of them in hardcover, thank goodness for ebay. might have had some influence--sure didn't hurt!

Seen a few real good ones live. My two favorites, both Marlboro Cups (I miss that race a lot):

1976 Marlboro Cup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWeWHgHivWk
Forego runs down Honest Pleasure.

1978 Marlboro Cup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBHczmcKS5M
Seattle Slew (2-1) dominates Affirmed(1-2) in the first-ever race with two Triple Crown winners.

Watching Secretariats Belmont (on TV), you knew you were watching something you'd never see again, you knew you were watching history. Poor Sham, got his heart broken three times over. Barbaro's Derby felt the same way to me. It was just the feeling of, "This is his first step into history, and I get to see it".
