What a friggin race call!!!

I tell you, people bust Vic Stauffer for his hilariousness, but that was one hell of a race call...I love the enthusiam.

fpsoxfan 06-30-2007 06:58 PM

He was stoked...

onebadbeast 06-30-2007 07:00 PM

awesome race and call!

robfla 06-30-2007 07:01 PM

Vic Stauffer

He loves the game. Him and Durkin are neck and neck tied for the best.

He gets more excited than the owners. I personally love his calls. I think he blew a lung out just now.

Remember when he called a race through an earthquake:

TitanSooner 06-30-2007 07:03 PM

I wonder who he bet on.

2Hot4TV 06-30-2007 07:03 PM

Vic was going to have a HEART ATTACK.

onebadbeast 06-30-2007 07:03 PM

Lava Native Man Diver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Titan, I don't think that had ANYTHING to do with it. Vic is a well known player, and he plays alot but that was all heart and passion in that call. He doesn't play 7/5

Pedigree Ann 06-30-2007 07:04 PM

Both Cal-breds geldings, by the way.

Sightseek 06-30-2007 07:04 PM

Ugh, I hate his voice.

I'm sure it didn't.. just busting the guys chops. I actually like the guy.

However.. at what point, other than right before the wire, did A.P. excellent lose the lead, let alone fall to third?

jwkniska 06-30-2007 07:13 PM

and the winner could have been had for 50K??? What a return on investment there!

mclem10011 06-30-2007 07:25 PM

Vic.....

Is great, he's my favorite, such passion for the game, he's awesome!:)

jwkniska 06-30-2007 07:28 PM

Vic always comes up with a great call, especially in the biggest races. He's really, really good with calling photos too.

I like Vic, but he has some gaps when he trys to call the back side of alot of races.

vic is my favorite, the guy loves the game and his passion shows through on days like today. it's genuine.

but I have noticed this year the same thing you mentioned, on the back side he frequently has a little hiccup while he searches for the correct horse. never hoticed that before.

MISTERGEE 06-30-2007 08:07 PM

hes no david letterman

Linny 06-30-2007 08:09 PM

Do you mean Larry Lederman?

MISTERGEE 06-30-2007 08:14 PM

is he the one who worked at atlantic city and was very funny?

Linny 06-30-2007 08:21 PM

Yes. He called a harness race at Saratoga a few years back. The winner was a mare named Dominatrix. In the stretch his call was "Dominatrix feeling the sting ofthe whip and LOVING it!..."

MISTERGEE 06-30-2007 08:28 PM

in a stretch duel at a/c he said this is a WAR they are bunge jumping off the clubhouse rooftops!!!! he had a million like that

Bogey 06-30-2007 08:40 PM

Great Call, if you don't get chills running down your spine as Lava Man hits the wire, you are not a true horse racing fan.

KY_Sasquash 06-30-2007 09:41 PM

i got chills watching the race, but i really feel that vic forces it. i'll never be able to forget his "soaring, soaring like a bald eagle" for Lava Man's whittingham win last year or the cowabunga dude. serious vic, put down the pipe.

"Straight and strong!"

pmayjr 07-01-2007 12:03 AM

I appluad his enthusiasm. Same for Durkin, the Oaklawn guy, and Paul Allen at Canterbury Park. I like emotion and differences in tone in a race call, or any kind of sports annoncing for that matter. These mono-toned guys put me to sleep. So no offense to Denman. He can call an accurate race, but you don't get the differences in tone from him.

pba1817 07-01-2007 04:51 AM

Stauffer blows call after call, then studders, and the best is when he goes silent for 5-7 seconds to re-check his program while they are on the back stretch. He is the worst big track race caller I have ever heard.

If anyone likes what they are hearing out of his calls, they are probably related to Helen Keller.

Terry Wallace is the worst very enthusiastic race caller there is.....just brutal....but he does get excited, I'll give him that...

Port Conway Lane 07-01-2007 06:05 AM

Frank Mirahmadi at Pleasanton Fair does a variety of imitations of well known announcers. Wednesday June 27th 10th race at Pleasanton he did an imitation of Rodney Dangerfield. It's a classic !!

I feel the same way when people say they like Denman.

miraja2 07-01-2007 06:48 AM

I can't stand Stauffer.
I would rather listen to just about ANYONE not named Dave Johnson than him.
His "soaring like a bald eagle" was just the greatest example of his annoyingly overdone race calls, that I believe demonstrate that Vic thinks he, rather than the horses, is the star of the show.
It also frequently appears that he looked at the entries for the race for the first time about 2 minutes before the race starts, and only knows about half the horses in the field.
When Durkin calls it quits, I hope to God they don't put that guy on the TC races. That gig should go to John Dooley....who I believe is the best around.

XIIPointStables 07-01-2007 08:14 AM

Is John Dooley the guy from Arlington? I like him a lot.

Actually, one could have gotten him a lot cheaper. He was losing 10K claimers at the fairs as a 2yo. Sprinting at 2 was not his game.

Except when he gets that nasal inflection every 15 seconds or so. Cannot stand that. Gave up watching Fair Grounds regularly because of it.

Bogey 07-01-2007 11:02 AM

Just in case anybody missed the stretch call.

They guy that just makes me want to barf is the caller that growls out "And there they go", cant remember what track it is. But I hate that. I like Vic alot, the emotion of it is part of the game, its what we are all feeling. And as far as missing a few horses or getting them wrong everynow and then,,,,that has to be a hard ass job. I know I would studder and stammer too.Give the guy a break, we all make a mistake every now and then.
