Seriously, I've never even BEEN to Texas... but if they want me, I'll certainly make the best of it! I've lived somewhere in NYS my whole life. Maybe it's time for a change. |

If you go to Billy Bobs, then you need to go Lonesome Dove for dinner. It's about a block away and some of the best food I have ever had.
|
JoeT Garcias in Ft worth is one of the best Tex - mex places arround but if you go to LS , the Simo pavilion has the best Nauchos anywhere. Get the combo. If ypu make it to Dallas try Bobs Steak and Chop house, He has two in the Dallas area , the original on Lemon ave , near Love Field and a new one out in the Addison area. Bob does alot of advertising and is a big supporter of LS and horseracing. The train from The stockyards to Grapevine is a nice afternoon and oldtown Grapevine is nice place to stroll with a lot of nostalgia. Get ready its HOT.

Did you buy your cowboy boots and hat yet? |
I never found Mexican food in Ft. Worth or Dallas. So please report back on your findings Phil. I need a place up there as I visit now and then. And my sister who lives up there has yet to find one. But something good must have migrated up there.

I lived there from 93-95. I was 23 and single and it was the best two years of my life, up to that point. I'm married now with a child and back in NY were I was born and raised. I don't think I would want to raise a child down there (no offense to the southerners on the board) but as a young single guy from NY, it was awesome.
I'd head over to the Dallas side of things if you are a yankee. You may find Fort Worth to be a bit hokie. Try either lower Greenville Ave or Deep Ellum (www.deepellumtx.com). |

I love Austin and I love San Antonio. But they are both getting so big. So Gator I dont think its the state as much as the particular city in the State. I personally think Phil has been invited to a less than desirable spot. |

And in places like Highland Park the schools are very good but highly competitive and I would deem extraordinarily stressful as parents are competing against each other by GPA of their kids. |

I disagree with Pgardn that the private schools in Texas are bad. NT |
The school system in most of Florida stinks too. Our zoning procedure is totally ludicrous. I guess in that aspect, I can see where you guys are coming from. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do for my son, actually... if I stay here in Florida for a couple more years, I don't want him in the public school system. Private school is so expensive...

And yes you might be accurate in your assumption because I have had the good fortune of teaching in public schools where the majority of parents have benifitted from education. It is valued in the household. If I were a young parent again, I would definitely make my decision on where I choose to live based on the public schools in that area. This is for Cajun. |
Phil sorry the thread took a turn. I still need a Mexican food report and your experience at Lone Star if you dont mind.

Phil is probably mortified (no pun intended.) |
Not at all! I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts about the area. I'm not here for show, if I get this job I'm moving here (with another person who posts on here).
We need to know these things so I'm all ears! I want the real opinions not what they tell me in the interview. So far, I can say DFW is the nicest airport in the US, and I've been to pretty much every large airport. It's massive, though. La Guardia would fit in a tenth of it. |

There is a very good band named Emerald City that plays around town. "D Tags" is their leader and a childhood friend of mine. Wherever they play, it's a good show and a great time. They've played at the White House for Bush and did Mark Cuban's wedding. They're also the house band for the Dallas Mavs. I go there once a year and if you move there, I'll hook you up and we can work as "crew" on the floor. www.emeraldcityband.com

In terms of living around or near Fort Worth...Coppell is a great option, not exactly around the corner, but for years now the development has happened northwest of Dallas, as the "Metroplex" expands even more. Colleyville is supposed to be nice...I haven't heard much negative about Hurst, Euless, Bedford, and North Richland Hills is close by and very economically priced. I went to school in Irving, which is a ways from Fort Worth, but some of the smaller cities in between are nice and ridiculously affordable when compared to the northeast. NT |
