Hialeah on List of Endangered Historic Places
I'm sure this has been discussed on the board recently, but I haven't seen it... thought this was good news. (from the Bloodhorse)
Hialeah on List of Endangered Historic Places by The Associated Press Date Posted: June 18, 2007 Last Updated: June 18, 2007 The National Trust for Historic Preservation has put Florida's Hialeah Park racecourse on its list of the country's most endangered historic places. Hialeah Park is fourth on the list of 11 historic sites in danger of being lost to development. Getting on the list doesn't ensure that the sites will be preserved, but it brings national attention to local preservation efforts. Hialeah Park first opened in 1925. Seabiscuit, Citation, and Seattle Slew were among the top horses stabled there over the decades. Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, and John F- Kennedy were some of the dignitaries who watched the races at the 220-acre park. The Legislature revoked its racing license in 2001. The park's owner closed the park in 2005 and filed an application to develop 3,700 housing units and shops on the site. |

Last I read they are planning to build 4,000 condos on the site.
And if the problems in Hialeah continue, it will be an interesting place to live. http://cbs4.com/pets/local_story_166122439.html |

I too think it is the most beautiful track. What the F do we need more housing in So. FL for? There is enough. Houses aren't selling as it is. Like we need more friggen condos. Not like that neighborhood is the best of areas to live in.
That track was beautiful. They should redo it and start up again. If I could only hit the lottery for a HUGE pot. |
why not renovate and hold an occassional breeders cup here. it would be the perfect venue.

The demise of Hialeah is one of the saddest chapters in racing in recent years. However the greed of the madman that owns the lease pretty much assured it fate. As for housing there, I hope they are offering bulletproof windows and kevlar vests as incentives to buy.

Crime there is at the nat'l average. I wonder where, oh say, Louisville Kentucky rates? All I know is you cannot build a new 4 br home there for under $450k. Blanket statements like the one made above are just dumb. |

I suppose noone ever got killed at another racetrack? Wait it happened at Arlington a few years ago. Never mind. Thanks for the ride offer. I'll pass. I'm already there 3-4 times a month. I can find my way around. |

BTW, you can't buy a 2 bedroom home in the GHETTO here in Orlando for under 180k. Home prices are expensive in Florida, that's all there is to it. |

I wouldn't live down there. I am only about an hour and a half away from there. But then again, I wouldn't want to live where I work in West Palm Beach either. |

What the frick with statistics for a whole city? Who gives a sh.it? Chuck is talking about the area around the racetrack.
Stat fans get the stats for a mile radius of Churchill and Hialeah. |

Orlando sucks, for sure. As soon as I'm able, I'm outta here. |
Also..at Churchill the neighbors are, for the most part, overly friendly because they are making $$$ from parking. I have no problems, and never have, in the area surrounding Churchill.
And i'm willing to bet that Louisville is FAR more segregated than Hialeah. |

I was stabled at Hialeah for three years from 2000 to the last year it was open in 2004. I was pulled over by the police three seperate times going to work because I was a white guy driving a Luxury SUV in that area. The reason that I was pulled over each time was because I was in a high drug area at an unusual time and I was white. I can recall at least three incidents of people being shot or shot at while stabled there. The mexicans hated to go there because they pretty consistently got mugged when they left the track at night or beat up because they were Mexican. Half the crime in the area goes unreported because many of the people who live there are illegals who keep a low profile. You can site you stats all you want but I saw it first hand.

Can't be much worse than the area around Hollywood Park. :)
