Under radar, 'Pearls' cops PrM Stake

While no one was looking, Ken McPeek slipped Girls Pearls to Prarie Meadows Saturday and glommed a Stakes win...

Sightseek 06-12-2007 12:16 PM

I saw that in the TDN but thought someone must have mentioned it by now.

I'd forgotten she was going there until just now when I was looking up a chart from yesterday at Lone Star...

Did they risk her for a tag when she ran against Sumwon? I can't remember what Pearl's PP's looked like going in, but did she race much better than they had expected or was this an example of someone (McPeek in this instance) taking a gamble that the horse doesn't get claimed for a confidence booster?

I know it sounds captain obvious, but what a great case of what you can pick up from the Claiming ranks if you've got a good eye.

What was the purse? I had trouble with link on hand held.

Thanks

Broke maiden for $40k in race before the $50k claimer in which she faced Sumwon.. Yet another compliment for our daughter of Came Home & 'Molly'..

Is PrM still an option for our next start if the Monmouth race comes up tough?

MTH won't come up as tough as the Iowa Oaks..

dellinger63 06-12-2007 01:20 PM

I figured that but if a few start at Mth we know would be tough to beat would it make sense to gamble on a 200K purse and Grade III status with a start in Iowa or is that off the table and she's just not good enough at this point?

Riot 06-12-2007 01:53 PM

Nice placement by McPeek. Nice win for a nice filly.

I don't see us in a G3 in Iowa, myself (although getting to see Wing shave his head and other body parts would be extremely tempting :p ); off course I'll wait and see where Chuck and you think Sumwon will do well next out, doesn't matter to me - so far, very good!

Sumwon needs to win her next one, get a good hunk of money in her account.

dellinger63 06-12-2007 02:18 PM

I think $120,000 is a nice number.

Riot 06-12-2007 02:20 PM

Extremely nice number, all those zeros ....

now stop right there. no one said parts. I said my back.
I don't think I have to worry about it. But don't you think it would be worth it?

Too bad there aren't any $50k stake races at Fairmont Park
it would be an easy drive

$45k added to what? ;)

eh, she'll probably be in New York and not the run down bus station known as Farimont. I wouldn't want to get lost on the backside of that dump.

Hey, easy now...it's gonna get personal real soon.

Lawyer Ron wasn't too good for it... although that was for $200K. :o

Jman, I like that Ellis Park idea. Sumwon could go there and find a soft spot, then roll right into the Gardenia.

no not seriously just teasing

It's "home base" for me... that's all.

There are 5 rows. And seating inside, which is decent but not great.

PeteMugg 06-13-2007 05:15 PM

Do they have beer at Fairmont? I'm thinkin I'd go if our gal raced there.

jman5581 06-13-2007 05:22 PM

If there were no beer, there would be no Fairmount Park I'm afraid.

AeWingnut 06-13-2007 06:19 PM

it's less than 2 hours away for me
so I guess it is my home base too.
Would rather drive to Churchill or Arlington

phystech 06-14-2007 09:23 AM

Isn't the Claiming Crown at Ellis Park this year?

Those races were always a goal when I owned claimers. Nice purses for starter allowance conditions. The long f&m race didn't always come up tough....

jman5581 06-14-2007 09:27 AM

Yes it is.

Two rows ??? Does that mean most partners have to bring folding chairs ?

IrishofNDMan 06-14-2007 11:02 AM

I just saw that Humble Janet is entered this saturday at Churchill. Isn't this the filly that Sumwon set down and finished 3rd?

SuffolkGirl 06-14-2007 11:12 AM

Yes, the very same Humble Janet - will be interesting to see how she does.

SniperSB23 06-14-2007 11:28 AM

Keep an eye on the allowance at Churchill today as well. The second and third place finishers behind Girl's Pearls in her allowance win (Awesome Ashley and Tres Dream) are both entered.

A guy who does figures on another board said she got about an 89.

Riot 06-14-2007 08:46 PM

You can see the race replay today on the Churchill Downs website - good race, Marque Delivery ran a good one and almost got there, Awesome Ashley led them on a darn strong "catch me if you can" tip.

1:36 and 1 got it done at CD today in the allowance race. Almost the same time they ran when GP beat SWLY at a mile. GP ran 1:39 and change to win the stake at PrM. I'd like another crack at her at a mile and a sixteenth.

She is the consensus 'Best Bet' in the DRF Selections Saturday and Byron King's Best Bet as well:

HUMBLE JANET ran well first time off the claim, making a bold move to take the lead in an allowance here May 26 before weakening a bit late to finish third. She posted good numbers at Oaklawn over the winter and can beat older mares here.
