Which Derby Starters will we see at the SPA?

Every year as we gear up for the Derby and the rest of the triple crown races we often forget the "unofficial" 4th leg of the Triple Crown...The Travers. The unfortunate thing is by the time the Travers rolls around three-fourths of the Derby starters are never heard from again.
So...as we anxiously await Wednesdays draw of the derby field I thought I'd start a thread with this question....Barring injury...and the obvious....The triple crown winner...which horses would you either...1. Like to see at the Spa this summer. 2. Think will end up in the Travers.

I'd like to see Stormello in a mile or 1/16 race.
I hope Circular Quay runs in the Travers.

Point Determined is 4, he was in last year's Derby.

Providing they survive the Derby/TC, any of Pletcher's could run here. Teuflesberg was good here last summer and may return. Nafzger usually comes to the Spa so Street Sense could show up. Assmussen always comes to the Spa so Curlin and or Zanjero are possibles.

Of course some of the later maturing types, Sightseeing, Devine Park etc may also turn out.

Cajungator26 05-01-2007 08:32 AM

I hope Scat Daddy is there again!

Scurlogue Champ 05-01-2007 08:35 AM

I wonder if Pletcher felt bad for Scat Daddy when Circular Quay walked right by him in the Hopeful?

Or if he just continued counting the $$$$

SniperSB23 05-01-2007 08:38 AM

It would be pretty awesome if the TC series stayed competitive and we wound up with the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont winners squaring off. More than likely though by mid July we'll just be hoping one of the three makes it.

Scat Daddy had an awful trip in the Hopeful, but I'm pretty sure TP was probably happy about having the 1st and 2nd place finishers.

Wow.....Thanks....I meant Stormello....That's what happens when you start a thread two minutes after you wake up.....Thanks again.

Linny 05-01-2007 10:58 AM

I wouldn't expect to see any of the Cali based runners here. That would mean, Stormello, Tiago, Great Hunter.

whodey17 05-01-2007 11:12 AM

In my opinion, The Travers is an overrated race. It is a good race and fits well in the summer for those 3 year olds who are gearing up for their fall campaign. You usually have a couple of horses from the TC races compete and then some new shooters. For me, it is really nothing special. To answer the question, I could see Chelokee, one of the Pletchers horse (AGS, QUAY or SC), probably a Zito horse.

Well...you should go there sometime on Travers day. It's a very festive atmosphere. When the weather is nice and it's a decent field the place is hopping. I agree with you about Chelokee. I guess the original reason for the thread was because all of us guys who go to Saratoga every year wonder where all the three year olds have gone. The field has come up very short over the past few year.

whodey17 05-01-2007 11:36 AM

I think the turf racing at Saratoga is a little underrated. That is one of the things I look forward to about their meet. Also, they have a couple of races for the ladies that I find intriguing each year.

Assmusem has several babies ny Possee that look like runners. they maynot wan a rout of ground though. I look for posse to have a lot of speedos that will win early, Kinda like the dad.

Cajungator26 05-01-2007 03:58 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing the Hook and Ladder babies run...

How can a race be overrated?

I would love to see Posse in a speedo

Yankee Gentleman is the freshman sire who I believe will surprise people the most. IMO, he will get some real nice, athletic, early developing sprinters and milers.

[quote=DaHoss9698]I was thinking the same thing. I am eagerly awaiting the explanation on this one.[/QUOTEThe Travers hasn't lived up to expectations the last few years. It's not the Travers fault, but everybody gears for the TC races and the Travers is an afterthought these days.

Saratoga's my favorite place on the face of the earth but the Travers hasn't lived up to it's billing the last few years. It's a fair assessment in my opinion.

Overrated in the sense people call it the unoffical 4th triple crown race.

fpsoxfan 05-01-2007 08:29 PM

Well....It's been called the Mid-Summer Derby for some time.

Yeah I know, and that kind of naming is a little odd for me. In my mind, no way does the Travers compare to other top 3 year races.

Along with the Haskell, it is the mid summer million dollar giveaway

At Saratoga they don't run races at the distance of "a mile or 1/16th" on the dirt...they also don't run races on the dirt at one mile, or 1 1/16th miles, and certainly there are no half furlong races.

Unless you mean you'd like to see Stormello run on the turf---as they do run turf races at 8.5 furlongs.

If he runs there at all....my guess would be a race like the King's Bishop would be the best spot for him.
