Kentucky Derby cancelled
Due to the absence of ANY legitimate quality three year olds that can go ten furlongs, Churchill Downs announced that the 2007 Kentucky Derby has been cancelled and replaced on the card with a 1 mile and 70 yards Non winners of two other than allowance race. "The racing secretary felt that this was a more appropriate race given the lack of any decent three year olds and that he could use the two million dollar purse to beef up the overnight races during the remainder of the meet." The first Saturday in May will still be a great day of racing even while shuffling the inept sophmores to the back burner where they belong. There are six other Graded stakes filled with quality nominations so no one will even miss the Kentucky Derby by days end. The blanket of roses will be divided up into individual boquets for the winner's of each of the stakes, and My Old Kentucky Home will be sung before the Early Times Turf Handicap.

I thought it was the Woodford Reserve Turf Handicap?? |
The funny thing is that a thread like this surfaces every year. There's never a Derby good enough for everyone.

It's both sad and funny that instead of taking this thread as an opportunity to examine the facts, which by the way speak for themselves, that this is an extrordinarily weak group of sophmores, several of the teenagers who are members here obviously don't have the intellectual capacity to have a serious discussion and instead prefer to fantasize that this crop is actually legitimate and to ridicule those who have a firm grasp on reality.
Interestingly, this is the same group of novices that don't get the irony that Funny Cide hates the cold weather. |

"That this", as you've used it, is a dangling participle.... No wonder test scores are still down. How do I get back my tax dollars that went to "No Child Left Behind?" |
I wonder if someone made a post like this in 1973? hmmm....

While this is a pretty ridiculous thread, I often wonder if some wealthy horse owner would be interested in breeding, over several years, a group of horses with true stamina lines. There are very few races over nine furlongs for a horse like that anymore, but if you are rich you could breed for specific races.
Just a thought? |

What???? War Admiral would never make the tri in that race!

If this is the level of discourse to be expected here, maybe I'm in the wrong place. I suppose the same people who were so sour with you will now come crashing down on me. The reason I agree with you is that this year's 3 year olds have not run very fast. All of the prep races have been run in slow times and none of the top contenders seem to have improved much since they were 2 year olds. |

2.) Don't talk to SentToStud in that manner. 3.) Do you have a problem with people who receive welfare checks and food stamps? |

2. May I talk to anyone else in that manner? 3. I have a problem with blowhards who unnecessarily try to demean other members who are trying to make a valid point. |

OF COURSE this is a weak crop. That's pretty evident to anyone that watches horseracing on a regular basis. I still find it exciting to look at the contenders we DO have, though. It's not like we're going to get a new bunch of 3 year olds this year, so we might as well enjoy what we've got, make as much money as we can handicapping them and hope that next year's crop is better. If the thread hasn't been taken seriously. it is more because of the satiric tone and positioning F/L set with it.. not because there is an inability for the assembled to discuss the quality of the crop. Elsewhere, there was a day long delving into Tiago and his merits as a Derby player as well as a thorough analysis of Pletcher's individual disappoin.. uh, prospects.
I think F/L suggested a reasonable premise that this is a sub-par Derby crop and sophomore group in general, so I'm happy to start. It's a sub-par group as of now, remarkably slow based on Beyer pars with historical Derby preps, but with a twist. They're largely sound and have reversed a recent trend that saw few of the precocious juvenile stars carrying their 2 year old success into a sophomore season. There is simply one seemingly outstanding horse in Street Sense; a consistant, professional horse in Scat Daddy; a couple of potential stars that may be truly top level thoroughbreds (Any Given Saturday, Nobiz, Great Hunter) and a hatful of late arrivals that could be really nice at some point this year (Curlin, Deadly Dealer, Ketchikan). After that, there is a serious dropoff to a large group of 'nice' horses that seem largely interchangeable and forgettable... As always though, there is a long way to go before we will get the true read. But as of April 10th? Doesn't look like a particularly memorable group. |
