Looking at the top 20, it seems king of the roxy and sightseeing are both preakness bound, and I am guessing you won't see jack junior, birdbird or xchanger on may 5th either.
Speaking of the Preakness, does it seem like their are a lot more horses specifically pointing to this race and not the derby (Street Magician, SightSeeing, King of the Roxy, Chelokee) than in years past? |
from the looks of it chelokee gets in,,:D
|
I hope Chelokee gets in.

Don't forget High Heels on that list now -- around $175K if memory serves.
One more potential step for Chelokee. |
Stormello is going I think. Hard Spun is iffy.
|
I am crossing my fingers that Chelokee will get in.
|
rags to riches?
i think tabor could roll the dice if their other's don't make it. i wonder about circular quay. just odd that they took the long break to the derby. anyone else think there might be a soundness issue? |
As long as Cobalt Blue is in one piece, Merv will not pass this opportunity up.
Ketchikan, injured Reporting for Duty - Lone Star Derby 5/12 |
Stormello....in or out?
Even though Stormello has earned his right to get in the Derby..I would love to see this horse run in the Preakness. That track would better fit his speed.
|
Depending on what happens this weekend, is there a chance that we'll actually have less than 20 horses in the gate on 5/5?
Being that 7 of the top 20 are either out or on the fence, and several of the horses between 21 and 30 are either looking elsewhere or unlikely to run even if they do have the earnings, I think it might be possible. I think the past couple years have proved that if you don't have a horse with a legitimate chance to win, it's better to not ruin him and pick a better spot down the road. Anyone see Point Determined, Bob and John, Seaside Retreat, Sharp Humor, Steppenwolfer or Private Vow run a good race since before the derby last year? And yes, it looks like Chelokee will have no problem getting in. |
Quote:
Like I said though, there are always going to be some horses who don't belong. NT |
I agree...and steppenwolfer was probably a bad example.
I can't fault most trainers to take a shot when their horse is in good form, and Bob and John did win the Wood, so it wasn't like he was a complete fluke. But Going Wild 2 years ago is probably a better example. The horse was in horrible form and was in no way, shape or form going to be a factor that day. |

I thought I heard that Jack Junior was going to the derby for sure. Anybody else heard that?

How great would it be for Skip Code to win the Derby? :) :)
Go Skippy! |

YOU BETCHA!!!! |
Sightseeing to skip derby and only go to the Preakness "if it looks like the derby wasn't a good race" and the preakness "will be one of those 6-7 horse fields" according to the TDN...
|
Birdbirdistheword is supposedly going to have a go at a turf career instead per Bloodhorse. They basically said they're out though. Not sure where they're looking but it ain't on dirt at Churchill in May apparently.

Stormello is definite. Things are looking better and better for Chelokee every day! |
Updated with color-coded status key..

Notional Out
So now Notional is out, Street Sense loses and Great Hunter doesn't run huge. What about Shug coming back with Sightseeing?
|
Xchanger hasn't worked in ten days so I think he is done. The trainer of Officer Rocket said they'd only go to the Derby with a top two finish so he is out too. Cobalt Blue is in.
|
Are you sure Stormello's out? Seems like they were just bragging about how slow they made him go in a breeze. I hate to tell'em "tricking" a horse into not knowing they're in a timed situation is gonna be a lot more deceptive than 100K+ yelling and screaming as 20 horses go barreling around the track. Do they really think they just taught him to rate?

Well, doesn't look like Matz is going to get to go again this year. I guess he can point to the Preakness.
|
Great Hunter
Maybe it doesn't matter but Great Hunter is listed twice. Since Chelokee is left out in the cold, Zanjero is my super secret hopefully 30-1 include in the exacta.
I just weighed him down big time |

I think Chelokee will get in, he's sitting 22nd and There are a few in the top 20 that are unlikely. I dont know about Officer Rocket, but he didnt run that well yesterday maybe they will hold off on the derby. Who knows about Song in May also, so I think Chelokee will make it when all said and done. |
Do you guys think that there is any chance that enough owners/trainers will make smart enough decisions that we might not end up with 20 horses this year?

Just to have your horse run in the Derby is an accomplishment not too many people could pass up. We criticize them all the time but could you decide not to run? A few have not run and it worked out for them. Many of the horses that run in the derby never do another thing after. and I don't mean the breeding shed either |

On that note, he scoped clean yesterday after the race. he wasn't blowing hard at all. This just wasn't our day. It's hard for me to think that any horse was going to defeat Curlin yesterday. Unlike others in the industry, we could try to come up with ridiculous circumstances as to why he ran so poorly. However, this just wasn't our day. Now we must regroup and go from there. |
