SI article Green Monkey or Green Bust?

Got my new SI and there was an article on the Green Monkey.

In a nutshell the article basically says how Coolmore and Darley were involved in a battle of egos & power to get the GM at the sale last year. The author puts it in persepctive though saying that $16M is chump change for Coolmore as Giants Causeway is being bred to about 300 mares per year at $300K a pop, so don't worry about them.

The article goes on to say that the GM will be grazing in a pasture somewhere in Kentucky on the first Saturday in May instead of entering the starting gate and running off with "his" Derby. The article concludes by saying that at this point the Green Monkey is a bust.

Sorry I'm at work and couldn't access SI to post a link to the article darn filters.

I agree. So far it is a bust.

what is Giants causeways stud fee? i thought it was private so how much does that mean? Also how many mares does he breed too? I have always been curious about how much GC is actually worth??? 500million?

XIIPointStables 03-29-2007 12:49 PM

Does that mean they're bringing in roughly 90 million a year from his services?

Yowzers.

Green Monkey is a bust on the track. Who is to know what he can do in the shed. What if he becomes the top freshman sire. What if he sires 3 KY Derby winners in his life. What if he sires 6 horses of the year. I know this is all "what if's" but you never know what will happen. I do wish the horse luck in the shed.

Are you high? 3 KD Winners? 6 HOY? If he doesn't run a lick he'll be in FLA for $5k and won't get nearly the quality of mares that would be required to do that. I'll go as far as to say he'd be lucky to ever sire a G1 winner in his whole life. Now put the pipe down and return to reality.

hi_im_god 03-29-2007 02:10 PM

piling on the green monkey is like calling the kid from mask ugly.

they paid too much? really?!?

i had no idea.

a grade one?! he'll be lucky to win a race at all....or even make the starting gate for that matter. odds aren't in a horses favor to do any of those things, regardless of price paid!

whatever dude, i think he will, do you want me not to have a opinion because of what other ppl think ? the bottom line in this game is if you make money handicapping and i do ok, so all the other stuff is just discussions and opinions nothing more.

First, there is no chance you make money playing this game. None. I admire your enthusiasm but not your opinion. It's bad.

Secondly, anyone can have opinions, but if they post them here, and they are as ridiculous as most of yours, then they should expect to be mocked.

No. He stands for much less in the Southern Hemisphere and many of the mares that he is bred to are owned by Coolmore. If anyone is paying $300k for him they are seriously nuts.

I also heard they made Giant's Causeway private. After ready what JT
Lundy did with Alydar, I can imagine they claim he is worth $300k a pop. Get a loan based on 100 years of servicing 200 mares 3 times a day
woo hoo

He is making a bold prediction, you guys may not agree with it and think it's a bit crazy, but who cares.

yes... actually calling the Green Donkey a G1 winner was not the fuel behind the fire

The Green Monkey will make a lot of money one way or another. Is that a good prediction?

Considering how much it probably costs to insure him, and how much he cost at the sale, I say no it isnt a good prediction.

I don't think I am very liked on here nor is PG1985. I don't know why, maybe it is because we have got the rep of being young punks, but who knows.

I like you despite your ties with the golden dome

Grits 03-29-2007 04:52 PM

Almost everyone on here is young. INDM, you and PG#s don't have any corner on that one. Some have just been here longer and they want to treat you any way they desire. Toughen up. This too shall pass.

I'm not one bit worried about it, I can take it just as easily as I can dish it out. Like Cannon hinted on, most of the crap I get is because of my ties to the IRISH!

I think being 21 and 22 is maybe a little bit younger than the rest. I have been posting on horse racing message boards since I was 18, I started on ESPN with most people and made the change over here.

A life altering change at that
