I wish Pepsi would do that...

High Fructose Corn Syrup is horrible for you, but it beats Nutrasweet. I refuse to drink diet sodas because of that. :p

Holy cow; thank you for that! I so prefer sugar to corn syrup. Will definitely stock up!

I'm a fan of Cane Cola, which is made with cane sugar.

you sound like my chiropracter who used to routinely give me copies of articles telling me I was going to die from the aspartame in my diet pepsi...but with the amount I drink (I am an addict) if it was regular I would weigh at LEAST 300 pounds:o

I've been doing that trick for years :)

pgardn 03-19-2007 10:34 PM

Fructose is sweeter to the palate so one can actually use less of it than sucrose (table or cane sugar). Its why honey is so sweet, the majority of which is fructose.

I like fructose, but not dumped in the quantities they do in soft drinks. And I like fructose from bees, not corn. But alas, fructose from bees is more expensive than fructose from corn.

I can elaborate on the sweet carbohydrates if anyone insists... ok maybe not.

Yep, me too... I probably kill about 32 ounces of pepsi a day. I guess I'm lucky I only weigh the 130 lbs that I do. :o I actually tried to quit, and managed to quit for 3 months, but I didn't lose a single pound. Why should I suffer if I'm not going to lose weight? Haha

it's like the gas station guy told me one morning when I stopped to buy my daily diet pepsi...'could be worse you could be drinkin' Budwiser every day'

Except that, in the case of high fructose corn syrup, the process used to make it changes it so that the body doesn't actually recognize it as food- it's why it's so easy to toss back a 20 oz Coca cola, while a 12-ounce soda made with sugar actually makes you feel more full.

There are some who say America's obesity epidemic can be traced to Nixon's change of the subsidies to the agricultural industry in the 1970's- since farmers got their subsidies without the gov't taking their crop in exchange, they put so much corn on the market that it started being used in everything.

As far as I know, fructose from bees is recognizable as food to the body. And you're right; it's delicious. :) I also like chewing on an actual piece of sugar cane. Yum.

Oops. I like that too. :o (Although, not at my soda drinking level.)

Now you see, I think this is why splenda makes me feel hungry. It has a slight alteration, one crazy bond is shifted (no change in chemical composition at all; hydroxyl group up, instead of down) basically identical to sucrose and your bodies cells say nah, but your taste buds and brain say yes. And then I get hungry for sweets very soon after that. So my brain goes back on its word, it essentially lies, which is unsettling.

No one should like their brain lying to them. Its not healthy. If you put your hand down on a red hot stove, and your brain says ignore it until you start smelling your own burning flesh... well thats perjury in my "mind". Thats lying before the Supreme Court. Or maybe its just a split court, since afterall you did smell the burning flesh which must have got up to that mass of neurons somehow.

I have now confused myself. Which is as bad as my brain lying to me. I am forced to cease before my head explodes.

Zaf 03-19-2007 11:30 PM

I'm playing in a Poker tournament and the guy across from me is ordering black coffee's with 8 equals in them  The whole time I'm thinking how the heck is this guy drinking those and what are the potential side effects. Oh well I guess his strategy worked, I'm thinking about this guy's coffee when I should be thinking about relative things like pot odds etc. Just freaked me out.

Look for the yellow cap. Regular coke has a red cap.

I've never noticed that it actually said "kosher" anywhere on the bottle but I could be wrong.

If you find one with a yellow cap it's made with cane sugar. Check the ingredient list.

I have no idea how they do it, but Coke Zero tastes much closer to non-diet coca-cola.

The originial Diet Coke is sweetened with Aspartame (nutrasweet). Coke Zero is sweetened with a blend of aspartame and acesulfame potassium. It's supposed to taste more like regular coke because of the blend of the two. Chemically, they're almost identical.

It's more a marketing thing... without the word "diet" in it, it appeals to a different market. Some are fooled, but not me. HAHA :p

dr. fager 03-20-2007 08:50 AM

There are a lot of chemical compounds that are similar molecularly, doesn't mean anything one little change can make it toxic.

Water and Hydrogen Peroxide are very similar molecules, no difference there huh? LOL

I believe Kosher products are identified by the letter U with a circle around it. At least that's what my jar of Ba Tempte Half Sour pickles says.

A Catholic guy, talking about Kosher food, on a Horse Racing website...

The ones that have that symbol are considred Strictly kosher and a Rabbi is usually present to oversee.Otherwise it's just indicated with a K.

GenuineRisk 03-20-2007 10:58 PM

Diet Coke was also not developed to taste like Regular Coke- it was meant to taste like a different soda (which is why Coke Zero tastes more like regular Coke). And when it was introduced, Diet Coke sold like gangbusters and then Coca-cola freaked out because regular Coke was not gaining sales and then introduced New Coke, which, after Iran Contra, was worst decision made by people in power of the 1980's.

I might put it above Iran Contra, actually. I've drunk a lot of Coke in my life.

I miss C2. Tasted just like Coke with half the calories.

Of course, as long as Coca-cola doesn't mess with Fresca, I'll continue to patronize the company. Fresca is the single greatest diet soda ever to exist in the history of the world, and I don't think I'm biased when I say that.

I can't stand diet sodas, but I have to agree with you GR that
Fresca is pretty damn good. It's the only diet I will drink, I Like
the peach and the original, the cherry is ok.

Grits 03-20-2007 11:10 PM

I've never met any diet drink that I could tolerate, I don't care what artificial sweetner is in them. All of them are horrible.

In reading this, I'm floored by the amount of colas that some drink in a day. I don't drink pepsi or coke 3 times in a week.

The only time I will drink it, in a more steady fashion is when driving 10 to 12 hours. That's when I'll break out the pepsi, or better yet, mountain dew, with even more caffiene. But even then, I'm still sipping.

And I love raw sugar in my coffee. Good stuff.

I survive on plain black coffee, orange and apple juice and beer.
I think at most I drink 4-5 cans a week.

I've tried the peach and the cherry, but the original is still my favorite. It's always a treat when I can find it in a bodega.

GPK 03-21-2007 07:10 AM

I haven't had any kind of soda since 1993. Even diet sodas...that stuff is the worst thing in the world for you, especially women. The carbonation eats away at the calcium in your bones.

I am proof that man can live on water and beer alone...:D

Grits 03-21-2007 07:22 AM

It also can cause skin problems, something one doesn't want to contend with.

I have a friend that is addicted to Diet Mountain Dew, its unreal. She drinks it from the time she gets up, until she goes to sleep. Awful addiction.

Oh my goodness, was I ever a Diet Pepsi addict as a teenager. It kept my alcohol consumption to a minimum- I was legendary among my friends for wandering around parties with my bottle of Diet Pepsi while they were vomiting up Fuzzy Navels.

Cajungator26 03-25-2007 07:22 PM

I just bought some of the Kosher coke and it tastes kind of funny. LOL

I think I like the unhealthy high fructose corn syrup better. :o

i don't drink soda. most diet drinks are awful too. but i will occasionally have a coke zero--maybe 3-4 a year and i'm not exaggerating. but diet green tea citrus flavor is pretty good--and green tea is good for you. i have one of those every day now.

as for coffee, i do half caff with sugar free french vanilla creamer, no other sweetener as the creamer is plenty sweet enough. other than that, water all day and the occasional bacardi silver or glass of wine.

Zaf 03-25-2007 08:06 PM

Yeah the Coke Zero ain't bad, doesn't have the terpentine taste of regular Diet Coke.
