I'd agree if the race were at Belmont(maybe). But since it's at Aqueduct, I think the only horse who could beat DC is BOS... but I think DC will win.

This is an amazing amount of respect being shown to Discreet Cat. He's got 124 pounds and because he's a 3yo, he's getting two pounds on the scale so in essence, they assigned him 126. I can't believe they have him giving six pounds to Silver Train and nine to Badge of Silver.

I can't believe Silver train is giving weight to any one...what the hell has he done this year?
let's face it if the race isn't at belmont he doesn't win...and his last race was not pretty.

He won the Met Mile and Tom Fool.. all in all not a terrible year.

I don't believe weight matters, but the weights for this race are beyond ludicrous and smell of cowtowing to Silver Train's connections to get him to run. For the winner of last year's BC Sprint, this year's Met Mile and Tom Fool to be getting 4 pounds ( and six on scale ) from the winner of an allowance race and the Jerome is absurd beyond belief. I wasn't aware that weights were assigned based on speed figures and reputations.

Believe me, the weights won't matter, but the assignments in this race are merely further proof that handicap races should be done away with.

I agree with just about all of this. There is no way in the world that Discreet Cat should be assigned more weight than Silver Train. I also don't think the weights will matter in this race either. When u say that u don't believe weight matters, were u speaking specifically of this race or do u mean in general?

Just realized I have it wrong. The scale actually says that 3yo's get three pounds from older at a mile in November. So Discreet Cat was assigned 127.

blackthroatedwind 11-23-2006 09:21 PM

I pretty much don't think weight matters, within reason, in general. But, to each their own, however why bother having handicaps and assigning weights in the manner they did for this race?

I had read it was two pounds at this time of year for a mile but either way the assignments make no sense.

sumitas 11-23-2006 09:26 PM

these are the total weights the horses will be carrying. there are not hidden 3 or 4#.

1 Badge of Silver (KY) 6 Horse 117 Javier Castellano
2 Silver Train (KY) 4 Colt 120 Edgar S. Prado
3 Dixie Meister (TX) 4 Gelding 117 Fernando Jara
4 Discreet Cat (KY) 3 Colt 124 Garrett K. Gomez
5 Sharp Humor (NY) 3 Colt 115 Cornelio H. Velasquez

We aren't talking about hidden weights or anything. Talking about scale weights. The Jockey Club has a scale that they go by in deciding how much of a weight break younger horses should receive from older and fillies from males. Ever notice the weights in the BC Classic? Did u notice that older horses carry 126 but the weight for the 3yo's changes between 121 and 122? That's because when the BC is in October, 3yo's receive a five-pound break and when it's in November, it's four pounds. Speaking of 10f races. The scale says that a 3yo is to receive a three-pound break from older at a mile in October so in actuality, Discreet Cat was assigned 127 and Sharp Humor 118.

I am with you. These weights do not make sense at all. I can see where Car would be heavier than SH but no way should he be higher than Silver Train. And I dont think he should even be heavier than any older horse in this race. But oh well.

Badge of Silver, getting 7lbs from the Cat, will win this race!

No he won't.

Three Valleys looks like he has a decent shot. He was certainly too close to the pace in the Atto Mile.

Parlay it and look for $4. DC will probably pay 2.40

I just had to go back and reread this.
We saw some very good ones today.
AHHH...make the memories. Today is what it's all about.

BTW, see ya next year with this one. I think I win this arguement.

While I give Badge of Silver credit for still having something in the tank as a 6YO after a virtual career of injuries, he hardly ran a great race today, and frankly considering the trips it's astonishing he JUST nailed second in the last jump. Silver Train did ALL the work, forcing Discreet Cat from inside during the fastest part of the race, while Badge of Silver laid in wait and merely sucked up. Now, he sucked up in a fast race, and deserves credit for maintaining at least decent form through a lot of adversity, but his performance today was at best third best in what was essentially a three horse field.
