This thread's gonna go a bit quiet for a while. I'm off overseas for six weeks!
I'm going sightseeing in San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Berlin and others, and I'm going to see some reasonably famous horse races in Louisville on May 5 and Epsom Downs on June 2. So excited! But sorry for the lack of NZ updates between now and June 10. |
Hope you have a fantastic time!

Dear ed...
Wish you were here. :D Huge congrats on your girl coming in 4th! Absolutely amazing!!!!! The other news? Ummmm guess who won? Yes! Vonusti fonally did it!!! (First win since he won the Telegraph over two years ago, right?). I was almost in tears, so happy. (Don't judge me!). :p He looked good, like he remembered! Came flying, the big lug, and just nailed it at the wire. Some finish! Haha yea!!!!! :tro: :{>: |
Stuff to tell ed when he's back... :D
Jimmy will stand at Rich Hill... Six O'Clock News is on the retirements thread... Wealth Princess won the Glenlogan Park again (2nd time?) last weekend (!)...(or however long ago that was) :D MIlitary Move was retired on the 23rd but from our friends at the HKJC... MILITARY MOVE (M077) 24/05/2012 The Owner of MILITARY MOVE (M077) confirmed to the Club this morning that he has now decided to keep his horse in training. As a result, the retirement notice for MILITARY MOVE (M077) published yesterday is now cancelled. |
Possibly the last couple of things till you're back but I don't want to forget!
Check out the head on replay. Major applause for MDP cause that could have turned into a nightmare very quickly. http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...eno=8&venue=ST Excerpt, SCMP... Hall's day wasn't all beer and skittles though :D and his handy three-year-old Medallist ran into unusual trouble in the eighth race.Medallist's hood and bridle slipped over his head behind the starting gates and everything had to be refitted before the start of the race, but it didn't end there. The gear slipped over Medallist's head again mid-race, blocking the horse's vision and forcing jockey Mark du Plessis to keep hold of Medallist's head so the bit didn't come out of his mouth and Du Plessis had to ease the horse out of the race. http://racing.scmp.com/freeservice/n...s20120604b.asp Military Move  is entered at HV on Wednesday, Dolouze up. (Noble Conqueror is in that one and he loves Happy Valley so we'll see). edit - Oh yeah and Opie gave Gingerbread Man a really nice ride last night at Kranji. |
This is insane.
60 kg for Ginga Dude. Hope he blows past all of them and shows those youngsters how it's done. :) Nice quote from Mr. Boyd... "Michael Walker once told me that if he had to go into a battle with a horse it would be him." http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news...ectid=10812817 |
5th. Just a bit too much weight. But he tried hard and wasn't far away.
Thanks for all those updates while I was away! Lots of interesting news. |
Good luck to Durham Town in the Eye Liner Stakes!

I've missed you!!!!! Hope you had a fabulous time!!! |
Hey ed this sucks! When do things pick up... August?
I wanted to ask you if Opie, who I do like so very much, has a history of mental illness (?). If so I'm very sorry to hear it and if not can you or can anyone please explain to me why he dropped the mount on Gingerbread Man for Red Beard in the upcoming Derby at Kranji? :D |
Haha, it does seem like a strange move! I'm not aware of him having any problems with mental illness.
The first G1 of the new season is at Hastings on September 1. Mufhasa, He's Remarkable, Veyron... Can't wait! There have been some nice 2yo performances in the last few weeks, but nothing really spectacular. Hopefully things will start to pick up soon. |
I miss seeing those names!
So Opies horse was last (I still haven't even watched it) Gingerbread Man midfield somewhere, sadly cannot remember the name of the horse who did win BUT HUGE news and the reason it's here and not on the very popular :D Singapore thread... Guess who is there and who raced on Sunday (in the Gold Trophy with Waikato and Capt. Obvious) (oh and he finished 7th but...) Upsala! Don't get me wrong I'd rather see him at home but it was very cool being surprised like that. (Okay now they need to send him home). :D edit - Chase Me won the Derby. |

Awesome news!!!

Entries for the Challenge Stakes on Sep 1, the first G1 of the season:
http://www.nzracing.co.nz/Meetings/Meeting.aspx/40668 |
It's like fantasy time reading those noms cause how can one field have so many possibles who are SOOOOO good? :tro:
Ahem not to nag you or anything but kindly remember that we will probably need a 2012-2013 thread pretty soon! |
Oh, good call! I'll make that soon.
The amazing Justa Tad story continued today. She was purchased for $1000 as a yearling in 2003. She won the Oaks and the 1000 Guineas; career earnings of $727,226. And now she's produced a stakes-winning son! Move Faster (2 c Keeper - Justa Tad) won the Ryder Stakes today. It was a nice performance too, so he's one to watch as a 3yo. :) |
Jimmy Choux being introduced to fans at his new home. :)

This is always interesting - the Free Handicaps. It's effectively a ranking of the season's best 2yos and two categories of 3yos - up to a mile and beyond a mile.
http://www.thoroughbrednews.com.au/i....aspx?id=61133 I agree with most of these. I don't know why Ginner Hart is so high up the first 3yo list, though - higher than Antonio? I'd like an explanation for that. |
Who is Choice Bro and why is he higher than War Horse?
Interesting list and fun cause I had forgotten how many good ones there were / are! |
Choice Bro: 1st Sires' Produce Stakes G1, 1st Taranaki Classic G3
Warhorse: 1st Diamond Stakes G1, 1st Eclipse Stakes G3, 3rd Sires' Produce Stakes G1 It was pretty close. I probably would have them the other way around - I guess the fact that Choice Bro beat Warhorse in the SP Stakes went in his favour. |
And now here are the nomineees for the Horse of the Year Awards! With my predictions...
2012 Broodmare Of The Year Sheila Cheval - Dam of Mufhasa Sunday Joy (Aus) - Dam of More Joyous Triassic - Dam of So You Think and Now You Know Probably Sheila Cheval (I'm thinking this will be a big night for Mufhasa and everyone connected with him!) She's also the dam of retired G1 winner Keepa Cruisin. 2012 Stallion Awards These are just decided by number of wins, number of winners, prize money won, etc. The winners in these various categories are already known: Zabeel, O'Reilly, Pins. 2012 Breeder Of The Year The Oaks Stud (Dick Karreman) - Artistic, Single Minded, Zurella, Smoulder. Wentwood Grange (Hawkins Family) - Little Bridge & At The Heads Piper Farm Ltd (Alex & Cecile Smith) - So You Think & Now You Know Colin and John Thompson - Mufhasa I have to go with The Oaks here. AMAZING season for them, highlighted by the 1-2 in the Oaks with Artistic and Zurella. Jumps Jockey Of The Year Richard Cully - Joint Premiership Winner & Most Stakes Won Richard Eynon - Joint Premiership Winner Matthew Gillies - Most Prestige Jumping Races Won No idea. I don't really follow jumps racing that closely. Maybe Gillies. Jockey Of The Year Lisa Allpress - Premiership Winner Matthew Cameron - Premiership Runner-up (VERY close) James McDonald - Most Group & Listed Races Won, Most Stakes Won Probably James. Dunstan Trainer Of The Year Jason Bridgman - Joint Most Group & Listed Races Won Lisa Latta - Joint Most Group & Listed Races Won Stephen McKee - Joint Most Group & Listed Races Won John Sargent - Premiership Winner, Most Stakes Won Allan Sharrock - NZTA Nominee Sargent. With 111 wins this season, he broke Mark Walker's all-time season record of 107. Owner Of The Year A A Baeyertz, J P Goodin, G A Macdonald, G H Phillips & R W Sharrock - (37 Points) Shez Sinsational A J & Mrs I M Barker - (35 Points) Veyron D L, Ms N N & S C Archer & Mrs D J Wright - (46 Points) Mufhasa & Eight Schillings The Oaks Stud - (62 Points) Artistic, Zurella, Single Minded, Smoulder It looks like this is done on points? I didn't know that. Either way, though, The Oaks Stud dominate here. But honourable mention to the Archers and Wright, who only have a small number of horses - a champion and another stakes-winner this season is a great effort! Champion Jumper Counter Punch Ima Heroine Morpheus Southern Countess Tobouggie Nights Again, I don't know much about jumpers! Ima Heroine won the main jumping race, so maybe her. Champion Two Year Old Choice Bro P.ussy Willow (:D) Rollout The Carpet Warhorse Now we're talking! Oooh, close one. Probably Warhorse, just. I think PW is the most talented of this group, but because of injury she probably didn't do enough to get this award - just a maiden win and a G2 win in her 2 starts. Champion Three Year Old Planet Rock Quintessential Rock ‘N’ Pop Silent Achiever What an amazing group! And others that didn't even get nominated - Artistic, Ocean Park, Knight's Tour, Antonio Lombardo, Burgundy... Wow. We were lucky to have so many good 3yos! But you've gotta give this one to Silent Achiever, the first filly to win the NZ Derby in 19 years. Champion Sprinter (-1500m) Guiseppina Mufhasa Veyron Nice to see Veyron starting to get nominated for these things! But Mufhasa just edges him here. Guiseppina had one incredible win in the Telegraph, but didn't do enough for the rest of the season. It'll be interesting to see how she goes in 2012-13. Champion Middle Distance Horse (1501m-2100m) Jimmy Choux Mufhasa Shez Sinsational Veyron Ooh, tough one. Jimmy Choux had 2 G1 wins in this category (and a Cox Plate placing in Australia), Mufhasa had 3 (two of them in Australia), Veyron 2 and Shez Sinsational 2. They all did so well! I'll say Jimmy Choux, just. Champion Stayer (2101+) Shez Sinsational Single Minded Six O’Clock News Spiro Shez Sinsational's superb G1 Auckland Cup win is enough to win her this one, I think. Single Minded was great in his two G2s, and I think he'll be even better as a 5yo. And old Six O'Clock News had a great win in the G2 Wellington Cup, but he wasn't at his best most of the time. Horse Of The Year Choice Bro Counter Punch Guiseppina Ima Heroine Jimmy Choux Morpheus Mufhasa Planet Rock ***** Willow Quintessential Rock ‘N’ Pop Rollout The Carpet Shez Sinsational Silent Achiever Single Minded Six O’Clock News Southern Countess Spiro Tobouggie Nights Veyron Warhorse Big list - every horse nominated in one of the categories is automatically nominated for this. I'm gonna say Mufhasa. ![]() |
Great lists and I'd agree with so many of your choices but two things...
First off poor Veyron! Can't catch a break. Hopefully next year... :) Second for Horse of the Year - and you know how much I love Mufhasa, Jimmy et al - I think Shez Sinsational wins it. Of course I'll be thrilled for whichever horse wins as they're all just soooo damned good! Exciting stuff! |
When do the results come out, ed?
|
September 12. :)

Thanks for results. I don't know why I thought it was this coming weekend. What's happing this weekend? :) Oh and who won for the jumps? |
Jumps jockey: Richard Cully (26 votes - Matthew Gillies 16, Richard Eynon 3)
Jumps horse: Ima Heroine (22 votes, and the first mare to win the award - Toubouggie Nights 12 votes, Counter Punch 3, Southern Countess 2) There's a really nice 3yo stakes race at Ruakaka this Saturday. 1 1180X Silver City 6 73 56.5 Trudy Thornton Stephen McKee, Ardmore 2 2011 Buckland Boy 11 72 56.5 Sam Spratt M, M F & M L Rogers, Pukekohe Park 3 11X Sacred Falls 1 72 56.5 Leith Innes Tony Pike & Mark Donoghue, Cambridge 4 0557X Travino 7 72 56.5 Jason Waddell Peter McKay, Matamata 5 57X11 D'Cash Man 8 71 56.5 Cory Parish Kenny & Lisa Rae, Ruakaka 6 4175X Saatchi 4 70 56.5 Opie Bosson Danica Guy, Matamata 7 1332 Silverdale 3 65 56.5 Craig Grylls Stephen Autridge, Matamata 8 25X1 Southern Lord 5 64 56.5 Rogan Norvall Alan Tait, Matamata 9 741 Charlie Farley 2 63 56.5 Mark Du Plessis Patsy Riley, Pukekohe 10 302X1 King Zeus 9 63 56.5 Vinnie Colgan Donna & Dean Logan, Ruakaka 11 1 Elysium 10 63 54.5 Michael Coleman Lance Noble, Matamata Maybe not many familiar names here, but lots of these have looked very good in lower grades. Sacred Falls is undefeated in two starts and is already rated a 7-1 chance for the 2000 Guineas in November. And I really like Southern Lord - he looks super talented. And an old favourite resumes on the undercard: 1 4160X Floria 6 99 59.0 Leith Innes Stephen McKee, Ardmore 2 6260X Undisclosed 3 93 58.0 Jason Waddell Peter McKay, Matamata 3 3026X Capone 7 92 57.5 Mark Du Plessis Danica Guy, Matamata 4 04206 Sandblaster 1 92 57.5 Kevin Kalychurun (a4) Donna & Dean Logan, Ruakaka 5 72938 Nicole Amy 8 95 57.0 Vinnie Colgan Mark Brosnan, Matamata 6 5461X Flash Hapi 4 91 57.0 Sam Spratt Kenny & Lisa Rae, Ruakaka 7 3530X Antonio Lombardo 2 90 56.5 Opie Bosson Peter McKay, Matamata 8 01365 Toma Valea 5 87 55.0 Reese Jones Mark Brosnan, Matamata |
