I do hunt birds...ruffed grouse (partridge in these parts), woodcock, and pheasants. Never over my limit, and all eaten.
Wild turkey is pretty good too, especially after a maple brine and hickory smoke in the smoker.
Basically, I don't waste any of the harvest.
It's not the blood, the kill, or the pulling of the trigger that makes it important to me. That's such a small part of it, and frankly, it gives me no joy.
The truth of it is that there's something about hunting and fishing that connects me with something far bigger than me. Not many folks will understand that. Nor do I want to try to convince them.
All I ask is for tolerance.
And yes, I've been involved in chickens, pigs, lambs, veal, and most of the other meats that come so neatly wrapped in the refrigerator case in the supermarket. To be honest, we always gave the critters the best food, care, and life possible. It's as real as my stringbeans and tomatoes.
All part of the "garden" called abundance. Gosh, I love it all.
Thanks for tolerating my rant.

i have hunted, unsuccesfully thus far, for turkey. hard, hard bird. can see almost 360 degrees, detect the slightest movement. they don't suffer fools, and are quick learners.
you described hunting, and the lack of 'joy', very well.

I didn't live on the base....wife and I had an apartment in Boyertown (sp? Think that's not right spelling) and a short time in Browns Mills...stayed off base as much as possible although my wife worked at PX in McGuire...brought home far too many AF guys...

i actually live in a part of virginia that is near where that happened. i also work at the tv station that covered it last week. when the video got back of those poor horses it was very upsetting. we didn't have video of the dead horses, but we did have the ones that lived. it is quite depressing to see that our youth would do this. i think we should just be happy that they were caught, because a lot of times when people do this to animals they aren't.

Randall,
I was born in Teaneck, lived there for many years. Also Tenafly, taught in Dumont. I also lived in Palisades Park.
During my highschool days, I spent way too much time in the shore area, Long Branch, Monmouth Beach, Deal...
NJ always has a soft spot in my heart.
Also, my undergrad is from Wm Paterson. (Wayne, NJ)

I agree that it's good they were caught and yes, it is unsettling. We all have a dark side, keeping it in check is sometimes difficult but always necessary.

Willy P. Went to Rutgers myself...Glad to know Jersey has a special place....Don't know where I want to end up. Maybe here, maybe not....If I could take the winters I'd live in upstate NY.

By the time I can visit you won't be in VT anymore....That's why we can spend quality time in Toga this summer with the crew.

Here in the Catskills it's plenty cold today. But the firewood is all cut and split and the fireplace is roaring. Maple syrup (sugarin' time) will be here soon enough.
Where are you in NJ, Randall?

I really do like it in New England, but I worry there isn't much to do sometimes. If I was married, it would be an easier move.

Morris county is very nice. I have fond memories of a young lady that lived in Morristown. Some of my family live in Short Hills, Mountain Lakes, and my brother lives in Paramus (Bergen county).

when they have babies those are some scary birds!!! I had a momma chase around my horses one day because she was out in their field with her little guys that couldn't fly yet to get over the fence...I had to herd her out with the boss's range rover:cool:

My cousins are all grown up, and married.
My aunt and uncle live in Mountain Lakes, both semi retired, though she still teaches a math course or two at Montclair State. (also campus chaplain)
The lake in her backyard is full of huge largemouth bass that everyone is too busy comuting to Wall Street to fish for. Beautiful place!
