How did Favre end his 2nd last season, oh yeah interception.

So sad, I was looking forward to Favre improving on his record of
interceptions in his 3rd final season

I remeber last season (in the middle of a 4-12 campaign) seeing a Verizon commercial starring Mangenius and laughing. Thinking that there are like 25 other more qualified, better coaches that should be doing the commercial.

One final quote from a guy you didn't hear much from..

Q: This question was asked a lot this summer, and neither you nor (General Manager) Ted Thompson ever answered it directly. Why did you guys pick Aaron Rodgers instead of Brett Favre?

McCarthy: "I'm going to say this about the Favre situation: First of all, we should be here talking about the 2008 team, and I think we both recognize that. Secondly, that wasn't the question. I think so much has been twisted and spun. It really came down to him making a decision. I'm coaching the football team. At some point, when you get involved in situations that are at an organization level, then everybody's responsible for their part. Ted is responsible for the whole football operation. I'm ultimately responsible for the football team. Decisions have to be made on factual information, and I think if you just go out there and connect the dots, you can answer your own question. I'm going to stay on the high road with this thing. Obviously, I'm not in agreement with a lot of things that have been said or will continue to be said. There's nothing to gain for me to go back into it."

Q: After all that happened, where does your relationship stand with Brett, and how did you leave things with him when you last spoke?

McCarthy: "We haven't spoken since he left here. He was here on that Monday and Tuesday, and I think he left on Wednesday, right? So I spoke to him here Monday night for a long time, Tuesday morning for a long time, and I spoke to him on the phone that evening. It was very productive, respectful, but I haven't spoken to him since he's gone on to New York. As a head coach for an opposing team, I don't think it would be appropriate for me to be calling someone's starting quarterback."

Way to throw your GM under the bus. 9-7 or less and Ted will be sure to fire you before he gets canned.

How are you reading it? Being omniscient I do agree you are starting with a big advantage here.

hi_im_god 09-06-2008 12:21 AM

i think the organization guy was giving the organization answer.

he isn't going to dis a hall of famer that should go in with a packer uniform.

but nothing he said was a shot at his gm. he said as much as he could.

what i read is the packers took favre at his word and moved on to a point they couldn't turn back when he changed his mind (again).

I hate Favre and he's to blame for the Packers ever using a draft pick on Rodgers in the first place but this whole part to me sounds totally like the coach is saying he is only in charge of the players he has on the team and the GM determines who is on that team and even though he doesn't agree with who that GM put on the team, he's not going to say anything bad, but you can connect the dots.

i don't read it that way at all. i think you're supposed to connect the dots back to favre being indecisive.

why would you think he'd bury his gm and not the guy that plays on another team? win or lose, he's the coach of the packers. i've seen no public wedge between him the gm before now. why do you think he'd start that?

Cause he doesn't have much faith in Rodgers and wants a fallback excuse if they suck this year. I happen to think Rodgers will be very good.

[quote=GBBob]Well..actually he has spent the last 3 off seasons in GB learning the system and working out. This is HIS team now, not Favres's.

IF...and that's a huge IF considering who he is replacing, Rodgers stays healthy (and Favre doesn't come back):

1) GB will make the playoffs oops
2) He will throw at least 25 TDs
3) His passer rating will be 90 or better
4) And he will throw picks...probably 15 or so 13
5) BUT..He will rush for enough yards to be in the Top 5-7 QBs running the ball Yes

touchdown passes (28), passing yards (4,038) and passer rating (93.8).

Rodgers played well. The rest of the team didn't. Grant was pretty much a no-show all season.

GB bounces back next year if Grant gets back on track and the defense stays healthy.

Coach Pants 12-28-2008 09:32 PM

I know this stat is out there and this is a good one that actually matters...

how many times did he have the ball with a chance to win the game?

;)

Agree with all of this. I loved watching Rodgers this year. He makes throws that not a lot of QB's can make and he is mobile. This was only his first full year of starting and he basically got no support from the ground game.

they lost a lot of close games. I think they could easily be a playoff team next year.

Coach Pants 12-28-2008 10:21 PM

They lost a lot of close games because he couldn't close the deal.

Here is a list of quarterbacks Coach Tedford sent to the NFL...

Akili Smith, Trent Dilfer, Joey Harrington, and Kyle Boller.

LOL.

Rodgers is now getting ridiculous money. He better learn how to win games in crunch time or he'll be a bust like the 3 guys I won't mention from that list.

Agreed...I think 2 or 3 times, but he also put them in position to win games late, but 1) Crosby missed GW winner in Minny 2) Houston went 97 yards in one minute plus to kick GW, 3) Bears drove the field to force OT and hit GW after Crosby missed GW at end of reg, 4) Tenn OT game loss and there are more defensive implosions, but this is top of head. This stat below sums up GB season. I think Rodgers will convert a few of what you talk about next year, but they have to get better defensively.

In counting 419 points, Green Bay was not far from the 435 points it got last year. McCarthy’s team scored 48 touchdowns in both instances.

The difference lies in the number of points given up. Last year, the Packers allowed 291. This year, the total ballooned to 380, tied for fifth most in team history.

LOL, where's wiphan? Before the season, dude was saying that the Packers had better running backs than the Jets.

I'm not sure they didn't? First time in NFL history yesterday with 2 backs and 2 WR each getting over 100 yds. These stats before yesterday..GB ran for over 200 more..not sure about NYJ, but pretty close either way
