I find this very disturbing and really bad news if it is true. It doesn't look good to me, so I am sure it doesn't look good to others. Frankly, maybe I am naive, but I would have never expected this out of Jeremy.

This topic is far more important than that. |

i have always loved rose... way way before afleet alex.... i have always found him underated, and thought he could ride at any meet in usa. i love betting him, i bet him pretty good on Lady Digby this past weekend. maybe i should not post in this thread anymore, i do not mean to offend anyone, and there is no excuse for what he did... i just hope somehow it was a accident |

I don't agree, think he (Rose) should be banned for a long-ass time, but no problem reading the opinions of people who have a different take. |

and yes, it was cruel. no beating around the bush with this one. it's darkest before the dawn, right? so how much more will be piled on in this sport in the weeks and months to come? |

peta isn't sick in this instance, but a jocks behavior certainly is. |

Both the winner and Rose's mare were all over the track in the stretch ... Rose was moving on the outside whipping right handed, when the winner drifted out, and Rose's mare veered in .. Rose switched the whip to the left, and nothing looked too amiss until the wire ... Had Rose's mare been bearing in uncontrollably to the point of danger to herself, Rose, and the field, hitting her in the head is an ugly last resort, but better than flipping over the rail or racking up the field behind her in doing so ... I have seen horses hit on the side of the head while bearing in or out uncontrollably as a last ditch measure ... I do not know if this was the case here, but it looked like the mare was ok on the rail and got a punitive crack in the face ... Maybe , maybe not ... It looked bad enough for the stewards to take measures, but I'd rather hear a final answer before I make a final judgement ... It is, however, inargueable, that racing does not need this, and neither did the poor mare ... |

This is a clear cut situation. It is very bad. Intent doesn't matter. Rose has to be held accountable for his actions. Is there a "his side of the story" so to speak? Possibly. Victor Carrero didn't have a "his side of the story" -- he did what he did out of anger, frustration, etc. -- and no offense, that didn't mean a thing. He faced the music for his actions. I understand the "other side" and how that can play out, but that doesn't justify or explain this type of action.
It doesn't matter if it was a cheap claimer or a stake horse. I don't care. Nobody else should either. It doesn't matter. I don't care what PETA has to say -- I don't need them telling me this was wrong, or bad, or whatever. I certainly don't need them furthering their own, and often uneducated, agenda by distorting truths. Handing out punishments due to public pressure or duress, educated or not, can be very dangerous. OTOH, it can cut both ways. The educated public, people in the business, etc. must know that regulatory bodies are serious and that there is bite behind the bark. Perhaps though, you can never satisfy the uneducated public. You can't increase penalties because you are afraid of "what people might think" -- or else you are not governing with confidence and integrity; you are governing for popularity. Doing what is right means sometimes doing what is unpopular. Unfortuantely, often, there can be no standard. You want to tell me there should be a minimum -- OK, I see that. A minimum of X days, y dollar fine, anger management, community/backstretch service, etc. -- OK, that's fine. In our own legal systems, we have sentencing guidelines, mandatory sentences, graduated sentencing, etc. Perhaps we need that within our own "system" for our sport. Eric |
