The "provocation" was just a typical incident that occurs as horses gain fotting and position early. Martin's actions did not appear intentinal at all, Coa's did.

Coa almost put Leparoux over the hedge twice at saratoga and it looked totally on purpose.

This "non-decision decision thing is just wrong. These officials are paid to make decisions not waffle.

More and more, it seems, stewards are making their decisions based on the "did it or did it not alter the race outcome" concept. To be sure, subjectivity is part of their job, but it's gotten out of hand, imo.

I rarely see any DQ's any more for incidents other than those that occur in the homestretch which is wrong. To a great extent, a foul is a foul, wherever it occurs during a race. By not punishing riders for these fouls, the stewards only encourage this kind of bad race-riding tactics.

"Every man is given a spoon. Any man who loses his spoon spends a night in the box." Where's Boss Karl when we need him?

Excellent post

Wow Cannon, "least respected" . . . you're a little strong aren't you? Where I live, most of them have degrees in Metoerological Science, and they don't get too much of it wrong any more.

I also agree with Sent2Stud. It's the same twisted logic you see from Stewards concerning suspensions. Every time a horse is disqualified in a questionable decision the stewards seem to give the rider days ( which is not always necessary ) as if to justify their mediocre decision.

The stretch fouls while ignoring the rest of the race is preposterous. It would be like the NBA doing away with backcourt fouls.

I agree, thanks G.

No. Computers do most of their work now anyway, and they are still wrong quite often. Name a lesser respected professional profession? Politicians dont count!

I totally agree.

Well, with the slight exception of posts 85, 87, 88, 89, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 99, 100, 102, 103, 107, 111.

Other than that, yes, you are right. Those pages were full of just foolishness that had nothing to do with the discussion.

*Cue sirens for the on-topic popo*

How do we know the stewards didn't take into consideration facts unknown to the public when handing out the equal suspensions?

Grits 03-29-2007 12:52 PM

Looks like I may be searching for another trainer, if and when I buy a horse.
I don't think this one cares for me one iota.
And knowing he's good.

Bummer.

I'm a little late to chime in on this thread, but I thought that Coa displayed a questionable move on Saturday as well. I believe it was the 4th race...he ended up winning, but pinched the 2nd place horse tight on the rail in deep stretch, causing him to check (Ponce aboard). I remember thinking it was unnecessary at the time.

yikes...my husband and i disagree on some things--not looking for a new hubby! just because someone disagrees with you on something doesn't mean anything personal.
